Bears land Marion Barber, Amobi Okoye

It took a couple days, but the Bears have finally gotten going in free agency.

Already, they had signed former Cowboys WR Roy Williams and taken a chance on former Jets LB Vernon Gholston, and Saturday night, the team added more pieces, announcing that it’s come to terms with former Cowboys RB Marion Barber and former Texans DT Amobi Okoye.

The team said Okoye’s contract is a one-year deal, while NFL.com’s Jason LaCanfora writes Barber’s contract is for two years and $5 million.

Considering Bears RB Matt Forte isn’t happy right now and has threatened to hold out because he’s slated to make only $550,000 in base salary this year -- he has reported, by the way -- Chicago’s move seems like one that could help change Forte’s attitude. As Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune pointed out, you also have to wonder about Chester Taylor's future with the organization.

Barber had a hard time staying healthy in Dallas, and earlier this week, he was dropped in favor of rookie DeMarco Murray. Meanwhile, Okoye, a former first-round pick, hasn’t been all that productive since he recorded 5 ½ sacks in his 2007 rookie season, recording just 5 ½ sacks since then.

Now, both get a chance to rejuvenate their careers in Chicago.

No the Bears made quality pick ups.  As a C-Boys fan I can tell you Marion is a STUD.  He just signed a contract that they couldn't afford.  Roy signed a silly contract that he could never live up to but he is a good WR and will be even better as a #2 or slot.  Congrats... the Boys dumb contracts are your gain.

I didn't hear anything about these signings until this morning, so I am pretty surprised.

My opinions are as follows:

I never cared much for Marion Barber. He is a beast inside the 10 yard line and that is about it. When Dallas made him their #1, I knew he wouldn't/couldn't produce as an every down back. If Chicago uses him correctly, he should be able to help in those goal line areas where we struggled last year. As far as Okoye goes, I don't know much. I know more of Christian Okoye (went wayyyyyyy back on that one!) that I do of Amobi. Any defensive lineman would be an upgrade from Tommie Harris last year.

As for the Cowboy fans that bid good riddance to these guys. Realize that your entire team was a mess last year, from top to bottom. These guys didn't contribute to that nearly as much as some other guys that are still on the team. Notice that Dallas didn't make a big spalsh in Free Agency this year, and answer this....what are you guys going to do this year? 8-8 at best? Looks like a rebuilding year for "ya'll".

These aren't great moves, but they're not the worst either. Marion Barber will help them and if Roy Williams gets his head on and decides to play football to the best of his abilities he could be a steal, but only time will tell.

I'm not a Bears fan (Pats fan), but I don't get the knock on the Bears picking these guys up.  They made it to the NFC Championship without them, and it's not like they're replacing anyone special (a bunch of no-name WRs and a washed up Chester Taylor who was an overpaid backup anyway).  As for Gholston, he's like our Haynesworth grab without the track record.  Low risk, can go nowhere but up (or, if he's a bust, they cut their losses and are none the worse for wear).  After the Superbowl the Champs will be everyone's top pick (deservedly so) to win the division, and most will pick the Lions as the wildcard if one comes from the North, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Bears surprise people and come in under the radar (like they did last year).

They add a lot of talent..Okoye with Marianelli could finally blossom..i see Gholston as a 4-3 DE..be in the top 10 of the draft means pure talent!!!...many factors can contribuite to a not brillant carrier..but they are low-risk high reward players

Who is it that made the playoffs last year & who had the #9 pick in the draft.  If we could give you a few more players we would but when we've only been in the playoffs for a blink of an eye since The Triplets change is needed when the skills aren't there.  Good ridance Barber & Williams.  One being replaced by a rookie the other one was replaced by a rookie last year.

I like the Barber move alot.  He runs really hard and hits the hole hard.
The only bad part is that he gets hurt alot hitting the hole hard !
Maybe as a backup, he wont have the same wear and tear.
How are his pass catching skills ?

If the Bears idea is to get every player the Cowboys just recently released, they need to sign Leonard Davis and Marc Colombo ASAP.

Trade Olsen and pick up Williams and Barber??

Wow... This is quite a piece Chicago! Another Cowboy reject. How do you do it?? Exactly where did Roy Williams and Marion Barber get the Cowboys last year? And they had Tony Romo. Just where does the Bears front office think those two busts are going to get them with "genius" Jay Cutler manning the helm at QB?? Roy Williams AND Marion Barber? Really?? Im sure this will mount quite a challenge for the Packers!! Meanwhile... in a secret bunker in dowtown Kenosha, WI... The Packers braintrust is working their hardest on countering this staggering roster the Bears have assembled.

Seems like the Bears are trying to set a record for the number of first round busts signed in one offseason. Disappointing.
