The Bears and free agent C Olin Kreutz still haven’t come to an agreement on a new contract, and apparently, the two sides are only $500,000 apart.

That’s the word from the Chicago Tribune, which writes that the Bears have offered Kreutz a one-year deal worth $4 million while Kreutz is seeking $4.5 million.

KreutzDoesn’t sound like a big difference, does it? Especially when you consider Kreutz is a long-time emotional leader on the team and word is that real damage could be done to the team’s psyche if Chicago doesn’t retain his services (not to mention that G Roberto Garza -- who has one career start at center -- might have to slide over if Kreutz doesn’t return).

The paper reports that the Bears initially offered a one-year, $3 million deal while Kreutz’s agent countered with $5 million. Chicago apparently refuses to go above the $4 million mark, and because of that, writer Brad Biggs wonders if there’s a divide between the coaching staff and the front office (the assumption here being that coach Lovie Smith would give Kreutz the extra $500,000).

One team source called the situation a “ticking time bomb,” which certainly doesn’t sound like a positive development. Particularly when, according to Biggs, there were at least six botched snaps at Saturday’s practice.

UPDATED (4:13 p.m. ET): It's been reported that the Bears have signed former Seahawks C Chris Spencer. This means Kreutz is done in Chicago.

Report: Bears, Kreutz only $500K apart

13 years, 13 hard years here! He was and will always be a leader! Spencer is younger and bigger and a 5 yr starter. Our line has had issues adjusting and filling so the rebuild begins, change is good! We always have issues with coaching and front offices not seeing eye to eye in the windy city. You learn to love Chicago Sports or just stop watching, prepare for the worst but hope for the best. Da Bears!!!!

You know what Bears?  Call his bluff.  Kreutz was a very good player for a long time, but the last three years have been rough.  Kreutz is usually pushed back 3-4 yards deep before he gets his footing.  He just doesn't have the push anymore.  Enjoy San Fran Olin, I'm sure if the Bears cave, you will spend at least 6 games on the IR or play through an injury which will only hurt the team in the long run.

I agree. Kreutz has been owned more often than he should on the field the past couple of years, the problem is that the Bears don't have a replacement for him. In Olin's defense he has had a nagging injury the past few years, but this is NOT the time to insert someone else and hope for the best. They need to sign him.

I just paid $22.87 for an iPad2-64GB and my girlfriend loves
her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there
arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail
prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED
TV to my boss for $675 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is
the website we use to get it all from, PriceCent.com

I watched the Bear's O-line play last year, you can get rid of the lot of them and it wouldn't make much difference.  I'm not sure how the Bears and Eagles made the playoffs, but they are without a doubt the two worst blocking O-lines I had ever seen in the playoffs in all my years of watching NFL football.
