49ers sign Carlos Rogers to 1-year deal

Cornerback Carlos Rogers entered free agency as a second-tier option behind Nnamdi Asomugha, Johnathan Joseph, Antonio Cromartie and Ike Taylor, and Tuesday, after those players had signed new lucrative long-term deals, Rogers inked a one-year contract with the 49ers.

The former Auburn standout was a first-round pick of the Redskins in 2005 and he never lived up to expectations in Washington. Playing opposite Shawn Springs and DeAngelo Hall for most of his career, Rogers was often targeted by opposing offenses and struggled with dropped interceptions (he has just eight picks in his six-year career; by comparison, Jay Cutler threw four to Hall in one game last season).

Still, at 30 he's relatively young, plenty athletic and has started 68 NFL games. The 49ers will likely insert Rogers into the starting lineup opposite Shawntae Spencer, where he will take over for recently released Nate Clements.

Rogers' one-year contract indicates that San Francisco wasn't interested in investing much money or time into him, but if he plays well in 2011 that could mean one more handsome payday in his future. If he struggles, then he'll probably be looking for another one-year deal next offseason. For now, though, he appears to be an NFL starting cornerback.'s Matt Maiocco notes that third-round pick Chris Culliver will join Tarell Brown, Phillip Adams and Tramaine Brock for playing time in the secondary.

49ers sign Carlos Rogers to 1-year deal

The 49ers pass defense was among the worst in the league last year.  All they can do is sign a 2nd tier terrible DB while some of the best were already taken?  Jed York is a cheap ass or a dumb ass.  They overpaid for Ray McDonald and haven't done crap in the off season to improve this team.  Their offensive line is going to be terrible AGAIN, they lost all of their key free agents except Goldon and why would he stay?  Any pressure he gets will be offset by the DBs giving up long balls ALL DAY LONG!.. Good Luck Harbaugh.  You won't get close to turning around this train wreck.  Why don't you guys bring in Randy Moss and Braylon Edwards to ruin any semblence of a locker room and really destroy the season.

49ers sign Carlos Rogers to 1-year deal

Carlos Rogers is terrible. Remember the patriots 52-7 win against the redskin in 2007. Most the touchdowns were scored on Rogers side of the corner. Knowing that the skins play the patriots again. The skins do not want to get embarrassed again.

49ers sign Carlos Rogers to 1-year deal

The 49ers offseason moves are mystifying.  They need a quarterback, and they do nothing.  Their secondary is a shambles, so they pick up a second-stringer to be a starter.  They have a weak offensive line that has very little depth, so they cut (or don't sign) both of the linemen who have experience at center.  They play a 3-4 defence, and they pick small D-end as their 7th overall pick.  Let's identify another weakness--general manager!  My favourite team is faltering even deeper into funk.

49ers sign Carlos Rogers to 1-year deal

As a fan you hate to downgrade in a area where you need help. This would not be a bad pick up if he were just for nickel packages but I would have rather scene a rookie takke his licks than a guy who is proven to be a bust. Big year for our team and now we add  a guy who was picked on in the Texans game last year and made to look a fool.

49ers sign Carlos Rogers to 1-year deal

Listen, I like Carlos Rogers as a person (never a good way to start a conversation, by the way).  But, he is pretty terrible as a football player.  He gets burnt more than my wife making me eggs and toast.  His hands are harder than stone, titanium even.  He could not catch a cold, could not catch crabs on Bourbon Street and probably is prohibited from even carrying his kids.  He is short and slow as well.  As a 'Skins fan, I was not at all surprised that he did not get much interest.  I am sure there are plenty of casual fans in shock over this pathetic one-year deal.  Look at the tape.  Just invest some time and look at the tape.  One year deals are for players who are either: (a) over the hill; (b) below average; (c) injury-prone; or (d) have off the field issues.  Rogers got a one-year deal because of (b).  Josh Wilson will make Carlos Rogers look like......well..... Carlos Rogers.  Hail.

I'm not sure why the Skins didn't try and keep him, especially after the price dropped...i guess he didn't want ot come back.  Good cover corner, and sure tackler.  Now with Buchanan suspended for 4 games, Hall and Wilson better stay healthy...
