Report: Umenyiora could need knee surgery

It's been a busy week for Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora and he hasn't yet practiced. Upset with the organization for not reworking his contract this offseason, Umenyiora contemplated a holdout before eventually reporting to training camp. Days later, the Giants gave him permission to seek a trade … except they were asking for a first-round pick, a steep price by most accounts.

By Wednesday, the organization informed Umenyiora that a trade was now off the table and, predictably, he wasn't psyched about the turn of events.

At the time, Giants defensive captain Justin Tuck thought Umenyiora was healthy enough to practice before adding that "I know where he is mentally, I know where he is physically. Only problem now is he's not happy with his contract."

Thursday night the soap opera continued.

Details via the Newark Star-Ledger:
The Giants informed reporters tonight Umenyiora has been sitting out because “he says he has a sore knee,” according to the team’s public relations staff. The key part there, of course, is the “he says” in that statement. Though the team says it has no reason to believe he isn’t in pain, it is clearly separating itself from the diagnosis.

A person familiar with Umenyiora’s status said he is dealing with a meniscus cartilage issue that, as The Wall Street Journal reported today, could require surgery. The person requested anonymity because the extent of the injury has not been made public.
This is the same knee that kept Umenyiora on the sidelines for all of the 2008 season. The Star-Ledger's Mike Garafolo writes that Umenyiora hasn't threatened to undergo surgery on the knee if his contract demands (or a trade) aren't met, and even if he did his recovery time wouldn't last the whole season.

Report: Umenyiora could need knee surgery

What most folks are missing, is that the G-Men are quite deep at his position.  Will we get the production we got last year from Osi, not likely, but the Giants sure can match what he did the 3 previous years, and the team was much more successful those years than last year.  I like Osi, but no matter how you look at it, ownership holds the cards here.  I guess Osi will have to "settle" for the millions already contracted for him to play a game he supposedly loves.  Rough life....

If he decides to get the surgery as a ploy to get paid and not play, thats fine.  Have fun trying to get a huge future contract from anyone after 2 surgeries to the same knee.  Aint happening.  The contract was good enough when you signed it, now its time to stop being a selfish cancer, and play.  Otherwise, like in the rest of working America, there are plenty of others lined up behind you, who want to play if you dont.

Again, love you Osi, youre one of my favorite players on the team, but I have no sympathy for those who are paid millions, and its not good enough, you have to have more....  Play ball, kill quarterbacks, and stop hurting your team.  Football is a team sport bro, and theres work to be done!

Osi you are a great player and I thought a leader. Dont do this. The threat to undergo surgery if your demands arent met? You just had an entire offseason plus to get this fixed. Why wait? If you need it get it. But , the threat IF you actually said it goes beyond a player I would want as a teammate or be a fan of. My Osi jersey may be done also.

This is the trend in the NFL.  Agents are telling guys to hide injuries in the offseason so it won't hurt their contract negotiations, then they end up missing half the season because they have surgery they could of had in the offseason.

Maybe he wants a new contract so desprately because he knows he cant play well enough to get another top notch one after his current one is up.

No one would give up one first round pick for him when they had the chance. He has a history of a knee injury and constant whining, he makes 7 million a year and wants even more. Not even Al Davis is stupid enough to give up a first for him.

You cannot trade a guy if he is hurt...even if he and the team want him gone! Imagine if the Giants had traded him to a team and gotten 2 first round picks. I bet the Giants would not take back the trade.

Thanks for taking David Baas off our hands. The 49ers were able to sign a veteran Pro Bowl center for less than what we would have paid Baas. :)

Lol.....I went to college and even graduated...The correct term is "subpar" as opposed to "substandard". Here is an example...

EX. 1 The truck broke down because management had ordered substandard parts.

EX. 2 The team failed to make the playoffs last year because of subpar play from the QB, CB, and DL positions.

Substandard receiving core? Really? That's one of the team's strengths. Not to many teams can top Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks, and Mario Manningham.

Using Osi's retarded logic, why doesn't Justin Tuck do the same thing?  He's a great player.  He's a captain on the team and he's already been paid 20 of the 30 million dollar extension he signed a couple seasons back.  He's only going to make betweeen 3 and 4 million per season for the next 3 years. He's 28 and if he gets hurt there is no more money after this.  Using Osi's logic Tuck should sit out too....

Timing....Timing, if a player need/s surgery, there is medical evidence, that, the player requires surgery. Otherwise, it may be optional. He passed a team order to practice....or did he not even date...thus, no physical. I wonder what damage has been done to the knee??
