Raiders sign Boss to replace Miller

The Seahawks signed Zach Miller away from the Raiders with a five-year, $34 million deal with $17 million in guarantees. To replace their leading receiver from 2010 (and one of the few pass-catching threats not named Darren McFaddenwho is currently on the shelf) Oakland inked former Giants tight end Kevin Boss. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the contract is for four years and worth $16 million, about half what Seattle paid for Miller.

Which immediately raises the question: was Miller worth it? Put differently: should the Raiders, who need all the downfield passing help they can get, have made more of an effort to keep Miller in Oakland?

Looking at the raw numbers, Miller had 60 catches for 685 yards and 5 TDs last season. Boss had 35 receptions for 531 yards and also had 5 TDs. According to Football Outsiders' advanced stats, Miller ranked 19th among all NFL tight ends in total value, and 22nd in value per play; Boss was 32nd in both measures.

To add some context, Yahoo.com's Doug Farrar (who's also a Seahawks fan and watches a ton of film) tweets that "Boss and Miller (are) not the same player. Boss: speed for shorter routes, good blocker. Miller: size and speed to stretch seam. Different level."

Boss' blocking acumen will come in handy given that the Raiders like to run the ball, but he won't magically make up for the lost downfield production now that Miller is in Seattle.

But, hey, maybe this is the year Darrius Heyward-Bey finally puts it together.

Raiders sign Boss to replace Miller

The sky is falling the sky is falling. The Raiders returned 1o of 11 starters from the defense.A defense that was 2nd in the NFL in sacks.  9 of 11 starters from the offense and added Boss to replace Miller.  DHB _Murphy_ Ford were the WR's last season.  Schilens returns healthy. D Moore was a steal in the 4th round and has probably already taken DHB's spot in the rotation. Ford emerged as one of the bright young WR stars in the league and now has a year under his belt (see Deshaun Jackson). The Raiders WR's may very well be a strength. No QB controversey for a change. And the best special teams in the NFL with Lechler and Janikowski.  I'm not sure I understand all the negativity.?? Could it be Nnamdi's 17 tackles and zero INTS or fumble recovery's?  Keep hating.

A lot of these FA assessments are based on "now" and are clearly short sighted. What about having enough money for next year to keep the people you draft- especially when the draft has a much better track record than FA.

All of these FA reports said the Raiders blew it this off season. I think they did a respectable job considering how much their backs are against the salary cap. Boss seems like a really good value pickup.

Uh- if Zach Miller is such a field stretching TE, then why does Boss average 4 more yards per attempt?  Not to mention, Boss got these numbers being the 3rd or 5th best pass catcher on the team.  Zach Miller got his numbers being the best pass catcher on the team.  To me, Boss is a sleeper this year and a great value compared to what Seattle is going to get from Zach Miller.

Zach Miller may end up with better stats in the end, but for the cost I would take Boss.

At least the Raiders replaced Miller with a respectable replacement.

Oakland's WR's ain't going to scare any secondaries that's for sure.

Heyward-Bey has trouble with his hands I'll give you that, but the Raiders have some real talent in Jacoby Ford.
