UPDATE (11:40 a.m.): The Leshoure injury, per our Lions Rapid Reporter John Kreger, is a torn Achilles and, according to Jim Schwartz, the running back will have surgery as early as Tuesday.

He'll likely miss the entire season as a result. Terrible news for the Lions and a tremendous blow for the youngster. It's also going to add fuel to the fire for the question our own Mike Freeman asked this morning in the "Daily Shoutout" -- are injuries up in training camps this year?
-----

Lions running back Mikel Leshoure was supposed to come in and complement Jahvid Best, giving the Lions a devastating one-two punch out of the backfield. But things got off to a rocky start for the rook on Monday when he was carted off the field with what is being described by our Lions Rapid Reporter John Kreger (who's on the scene, obviously) as a "serious left-leg injury."

"RB Mikel Leshoure is being carted off the practice field after sustaining what appears to be a serious left leg injury," Kreger wrote. "Leshoure could not put weight on the leg as trainers helped him to the cart."

Leshoure's not exactly the first rookie to deal with injury in Lions camp either -- as we've previously noted, Nick Fairley is dealing with a serious foot injury that required surgery and could end up costing him a couple of weeks of practice.

And, second-round wideout Titus Young, per Kreger, left the practice field with "muscle tightness" and is currently padless and hanging out on the sideline with his legs wrapped.

Not exactly a great start for a team that many believed could "make the jump" this season.

Doesn't look good for the Lions right now. Disappointing....I had high expectations for this football team this year. The injury bug is killing them. I say they just miss the playoffs. Tampa Bay Bucs take the final spot. Prove me wrong Lions!!

A backup that gets at least half the carries and all the goaline carries. Jamaal Charles is a backup and he does allright for himself...and his team.

Truth is Detroit Lions cant catch a break. But in reality, Leshoure was gonna be a rookie backup. So lets not sell the farm yet! Mayhew has already proven hes good at filling holes. Plus last year when they put in Logan he ran wild. I also beleive Maurice Morris gets no respect for his ability. All he does is run over people. Fairley will be back soon and our defense will be able to win games instead of losing them. Good luck Lions!

Lock out is to blame if you ask me. Rookies would be well conditioned by now.

Damn the Lions can't seem to catch any kind of break whatsoever man!!!! Just about all of their draft picks have been injured so far this training camp! I really wanted to see the Best/Leshoure backfield along with the current offensive team that we have. It always seem as though the Lions can't have all of their weapons on the field at the same time........F***!!!!YellYellYell

He was supposed to be my sleeper pick this year.  Last year I got Foster in the 4th round.  Needless to say I got the steal of the draft but still lost by 1 game.  The guy that took first beat me twice.  Mikel would have been a monster in my td/yardage league because you get 10 points for td's.  Dammit, dammit, and once again dammit.Cool

This is terrible news to the city of Detroit and terrible news for Leshoure. Hopefully his leg will get better and he will be back before playoff time, well nevermind he is on the lions. This can be good news for someone in fantasy that has Javid Best. Last season wasnt such a good season but maybe he will come back stronger this year with him being the number 1 running back again.

The Lions finished ahead of the Vikings last season. Identical record, but Detroit had a better division record for the "not the worst in the division" title.

An achilles tear can be a career ender. Wonder where the tear is? if it's closer to the calf, or the heel? From everything I hear, at the low ankle and heel area a very tough area to recover from an achilles tear.

Can't be a team that dwells on it, though. Mikel is out. Who's going to take the ball and run with it, literally?
