UPDATE (11:40 a.m.): The Leshoure injury, per our Lions Rapid Reporter John Kreger, is a torn Achilles and, according to Jim Schwartz, the running back will have surgery as early as Tuesday.

He'll likely miss the entire season as a result. Terrible news for the Lions and a tremendous blow for the youngster. It's also going to add fuel to the fire for the question our own Mike Freeman asked this morning in the "Daily Shoutout" -- are injuries up in training camps this year?
-----

Lions running back Mikel Leshoure was supposed to come in and complement Jahvid Best, giving the Lions a devastating one-two punch out of the backfield. But things got off to a rocky start for the rook on Monday when he was carted off the field with what is being described by our Lions Rapid Reporter John Kreger (who's on the scene, obviously) as a "serious left-leg injury."

"RB Mikel Leshoure is being carted off the practice field after sustaining what appears to be a serious left leg injury," Kreger wrote. "Leshoure could not put weight on the leg as trainers helped him to the cart."

Leshoure's not exactly the first rookie to deal with injury in Lions camp either -- as we've previously noted, Nick Fairley is dealing with a serious foot injury that required surgery and could end up costing him a couple of weeks of practice.

And, second-round wideout Titus Young, per Kreger, left the practice field with "muscle tightness" and is currently padless and hanging out on the sideline with his legs wrapped.

Not exactly a great start for a team that many believed could "make the jump" this season.

This will hurt the Lions Big!! They have to get a Backup Real Fast. I would sign Veteran Brian Westbrook or C Portis
Portis would be a great fit.

Not good, but I guess you can look at another RB, Rashard Mendenhall, for hope that this guy can become a productive RB eventually.

Wow ....big loss for the Lions. Fairley on defense has foot issues and now a season ending injury to Leshoure on the offensive side of the ball. If Mike's situation had happened a day earlier Detroit brass could have gone after Ricky Williams but he signed with the Ravens today. Lion's fans better hope that J.Best's turf toe doesn't resurface at any point this season. Maurice Morris is now the back up again. Yikes.

Poor kid. I feel more pain for Mikel Leshoure than I do us Lions fans. How could you not? He is going into the NFL, his dream come true, a brand new bright and shinning future, and BAMM! Season over before even taking a snap in an NFL game. Poor kid! I am not to worried though, He will be back. Mikel would have probably done well in his first year, but it is highly unlikely he would have been a HUGE difference maker. Rookies seldom are. Sometimes, but seldom. Still, it would have been fun to watch the combo of Best and Leshoure. The addition of a big  bruising tailback in the Detroit backfield is quite enticing. Does this hurt the Lions shot at the playoffs? Maybe, maybe not. My expectations as a Lions fan are somewhat tempered. I think they certainly can make a playoff run, even without Leshoure, but even with him they would have had to really raise their game. We will see. CANT WAIT!

I am thankful for Lions coach Schwartz. If anyone can pull the Lions through this and other setbacks, It is him. Three rookies being hurt and one being eliminated for the season does not compute as a total loss or evan a gamae loss. It will have an impact but not to the extreme that some commentors are stating. Lions will be OK. Schwartz will pull it off.

Seems like the Lions are becoming the Blazers of the NFL.  They rebuild the right way with good pieces and chemistry, but then are struck with devastating, career-impacting injuries.  Heart goes out to remaining Detroit fans.
