Mikel Leshoure tears Achilles, done for season

UPDATE (11:40 a.m.): The Leshoure injury, per our Lions Rapid Reporter John Kreger, is a torn Achilles and, according to Jim Schwartz, the running back will have surgery as early as Tuesday.

He'll likely miss the entire season as a result. Terrible news for the Lions and a tremendous blow for the youngster. It's also going to add fuel to the fire for the question our own Mike Freeman asked this morning in the "Daily Shoutout" -- are injuries up in training camps this year?
-----

Lions running back Mikel Leshoure was supposed to come in and complement Jahvid Best, giving the Lions a devastating one-two punch out of the backfield. But things got off to a rocky start for the rook on Monday when he was carted off the field with what is being described by our Lions Rapid Reporter John Kreger (who's on the scene, obviously) as a "serious left-leg injury."

"RB Mikel Leshoure is being carted off the practice field after sustaining what appears to be a serious left leg injury," Kreger wrote. "Leshoure could not put weight on the leg as trainers helped him to the cart."

Leshoure's not exactly the first rookie to deal with injury in Lions camp either -- as we've previously noted, Nick Fairley is dealing with a serious foot injury that required surgery and could end up costing him a couple of weeks of practice.

And, second-round wideout Titus Young, per Kreger, left the practice field with "muscle tightness" and is currently padless and hanging out on the sideline with his legs wrapped.

Not exactly a great start for a team that many believed could "make the jump" this season.

As an Illini fan, this sucks. I was looking forward to him getting alot of carries for Detroit. The good news is is that he does not really have an injury past so he should heal well. Also, he gets the chance to watch from the sidelines and learn some things while he is layed up.

Good luck, Lions.  As a Browns fan, I feel your pain of feeling "cursed".  We lost our rookie RB "compliment" last year to a torn knee in his only preseason action (Montario Hardesty).  Believe me, I'm rooting for you guys to make some noise in the NFC North, just as we'll try to in the AFC North.  But for what it's worth, I think Steelers/Ravens fans are worse than Packers/Bears/Viking fans.

This franchise is cursed FOREVER. Top 3 draft picks all out. Hopefully this kills all that playoff talk I have been hearing about this team. Get ready for another 5-7 Win season assuming our QB can stay healthy. This team just sucked all my optimism for the whole season before it even started. I pray the next news we hear about the Detroit Lions is good news !!!!

Well if ther is a COACH in this league blaming broken bones and torn and ruptured tendons on the lockout, I guess I am smarter.  The lack of practices will assuredely lead to more pulls and strains but let's not go crazy here.  I'm a physical therapist and former college player so excuse me commenting on things I have no clue about.  Apparently you win.  No need for anymore name calling or twinkie jokes my ego is much too fragile to handle anymore.  Hopefully no one taers an MCL due to lack of conditioning, but if it happens at least I'll be gainfully employed.
