UPDATE (11:40 a.m.): The Leshoure injury, per our Lions Rapid Reporter John Kreger, is a torn Achilles and, according to Jim Schwartz, the running back will have surgery as early as Tuesday.

He'll likely miss the entire season as a result. Terrible news for the Lions and a tremendous blow for the youngster. It's also going to add fuel to the fire for the question our own Mike Freeman asked this morning in the "Daily Shoutout" -- are injuries up in training camps this year?
-----

Lions running back Mikel Leshoure was supposed to come in and complement Jahvid Best, giving the Lions a devastating one-two punch out of the backfield. But things got off to a rocky start for the rook on Monday when he was carted off the field with what is being described by our Lions Rapid Reporter John Kreger (who's on the scene, obviously) as a "serious left-leg injury."

"RB Mikel Leshoure is being carted off the practice field after sustaining what appears to be a serious left leg injury," Kreger wrote. "Leshoure could not put weight on the leg as trainers helped him to the cart."

Leshoure's not exactly the first rookie to deal with injury in Lions camp either -- as we've previously noted, Nick Fairley is dealing with a serious foot injury that required surgery and could end up costing him a couple of weeks of practice.

And, second-round wideout Titus Young, per Kreger, left the practice field with "muscle tightness" and is currently padless and hanging out on the sideline with his legs wrapped.

Not exactly a great start for a team that many believed could "make the jump" this season.

Let's not forget Curtis Holcomb a rookie drafted by the 49ers. He was expected to make some noise and contribute to their secondary. He also went down with a torn Achilles. As for Nick Fairley....he was already hurt before the draft.....which is why a few times did not draft him.

What a heart breaker, our first three picks are on the shelf and one a season ender.  Our guys are dropping like flies, maybe we should shorten the drills/scrimmages and intensify the strength and conditioning part.  What kind of long-term effects does an achilles have on running back?  I was excited to see what Leshoure could bring to the table, will he be the same type of runner after this type of injury?  The key is still having Stafford healthy for a full season, as well as Suh and Calvin, but this has got to curtail expectations somewhat.

Lions Mikel Leshoure carted off with leg injury

Not exactly the news Lions' fans were hoping to hear out of there top 3 picks. But, gotta keep on trekking forward. What makes news like this more tolerable, is that even though the top 3 picks are on the shelf, they were for positions that already have some depth. With Fairley out, there's still Suh and Williams in the middle of the d-line. If Young stays out, there's Johnson and Burleson, with Scheffler and Pettigrew as well. With Leshoure out, Best is still the feature back, and Morris, with a little more consistency, can be a servicable #2 back. Because of what's transpired, I'm kinda glad, at the moment, that the Lions used those top picks to add depth. If they used those picks to get a franchise CB, OT or LB, and they had these same issues, it would be a lot more devastating.

What a shame for Lions fans.  Leshore just one of a string of injuries that would have had Lions battling for a playoff spot this season.  It's been a long road since Barry announced his retirement.  I'm a Packer fan but honestly feel for Detroit.  Hope these guys get back faster than expected...

Next?

Stafford or Calvin?

The team is cursed...has been since 1957.
