Dalton tops Cincy depth chart, his 'job to lose'

Carson Palmer's situation -- he and the Bengals are playing a game of chicken with his retirement that would impress the Bluth brothers -- has led the Bengals to likely start rookie Andy Dalton under center to begin the season.

Indeed, Cincy's first depth chart was released Monday and, as noted by our Bengals Rapid Reporter Paul Dehner, Jr., Dalton leads the way in terms of quarterbacks listed.

No, it's not that shocking to see Dalton up top, especially after his offensive coordinator recently told reporters that he was "assuming" that Dalton would be the Bengals starter from the get-go.

And considering that his competition is Jordan Palmer, Dan LeFevour and Bruce Gradkowski, but it's still impressive to see the faith Cincy has in him.

In fact, Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com believes that the starting QB gig is "Dalton's to lose" and he is "playing quarterback with the poise of a No. 1 overall pick."

We've already chronicled just how impressed the coaching staff is with rookie wideout A.J. Green. And while some of the praise for these two youngsters seems a bit over-the-top for even the staunchest optimist, if the description of their play is accurate there's reason to be hopeful for Cincy football fans.

Which is not what you can usually expect this time of year, especially with the personnel departure that the Bengals dealt with this offseason.

Actually I'm kinda excited for this year's Bengals team....Of course Palmer was a better QB and Ocho and T.O were better talent, but Sometimes if you get rid of the Waste and problems, and everybody is on One Accord, it won't matter what kinda talent or WHOSE name is on the Jersey. I'm already looking for growing pains because we're starting Fresh. But being that we are "startng fresh" could be a really good thing. We have a great New OC in Jay Gruden, Cedric Benson is back and going to be a key player in this offense. The Last time he was a centerpiece, we went to the playoffs. (Not saying that will happen) but who knows. Just like in 2009, nobody expected us to do anything based off of our 2008 season but we came outta NOWHERE. Getting rid of unecessary weight could be what this team exactly needs....Here's to 2011...WHO DEY!

Yea but Palmer is a quitter, He took the easy way out! He had better receivers but his receiver was a whiney *ss when he didn't get the ball and last year he had a habbit of not going after the ball. At least Dalton wants to play and is all pumped up about the season and wants to be part of the fix rather the problem because it's too aggrevating to stick around. He also has receivers who want to be part of the fix, ones that will stretch out to catch a ball and aren't afraid to take a hit. Ones that upon scoring a touch down will hand the ball to the ref and get back to the business at hand. They won't be putting on FHOF jersy's and putting the football. Dalton has to be more fun to watch because he gives a sh**. and the receivers should be a treat to watch because the want it! They are hungry for it and want to suceed. Palmer hasn'r been the same since he was hurt. I call it paranoid when he's in the pocket, and I don't blame him. I just hate the way he went about getting out of Cincinnati. Chad will fit right in at New england, perhaps they won't have to video tape the Bengals practice since they will get everything from Chad.

Poor guy.  Carson Palmer had more talent in his left pinkie than this guy as well as much better receivers to throw to for his entire career, and his struggles forced him into retirement.  This is a death sentence for Dalton's career. Poor guy.
