Jimmy Clausen tops Panthers first depth chart

One of the more interesting quarterback battles to watch this preseason will be Jimmy Clausen and recently-made-rich rookie Cam Newton, as they battle out for the top spot on the Panthers depth chart.

For now, Clausen appears to be winning, as he topped the Panthers first "unofficial depth chart" released by the team on Tuesday.

That's not a guarantee for the majority of playing time, however, as coach Ron Rivera indicated Tuesday that they could flip-flop between starters throughout the preseason.

"We want to see how each guy looks with each offensive line," Rivera said. "It would be unfair to have one guy with the ones, one guy with the twos, one guy play against a one defense, the other guy play against a two defense and say one looks better.

"So we're most certainly going to mix and match, and we have to so it's a fair competition."

Panthers Preseason

Rivera also made it clear he hadn't picked a starter for the preseason opener against the Giants.

"No," Rivera said when asked about the starter for Saturday's game. "We're going to meet tonight as far as that is concerned in terms of who's going to play where, what the depth chart will be and what the number of plays will be."

So, in other words, it means very little that Clausen is currently on top of the depth chart. And it may mean even less if he ends up starting against the Giants.

All that matters, one has to assume, is in-game production. And we already know who's to blame for that.

As a Notre Dame fan i must admit i like Clausen.   But i don't think anyone can make a judgement on Clausen (for or against) after last season when you consider how depleted the Panthers were of talent last year with a subpar offensive line and injuries at RB and WR.  I would expect Clausen to be much better this season although with a new coach that probably means a new system to learn.   As for Newton if he were to start his rookie season should be better then Clausen's because the Panthers have added lots of talent in the off season.

I think Carolina is hoping Clausen will play great so they can "showcase him" and trade him for a 2012 pick and then make Newton the starter.  Newton is a cheater though and everyone know's it, and it will probably cost Auburn BIG time down the road. A sports writer recently came out saying he has a reliable source saying Newton was paid $200k. Between that, what other colleges said Newton Sr. demanded, and the "Auburn four" HBO special, i have to believe there is some massive corruption going on there at Auburn.

Thats how it should be . I dont care how much you want to Hype up Cam. but he should have to win the job just like anyone else.
Jimmy C gottossed to the Wolves last year, give him a shot at the Starting job at least.
I could be wrong but I think Cam has BUST written all over him , In a few years he will end up just like V Young a Backup at best.

Typical Philadelphia fan.  They are the 10 time consecutive title holders for the pre-season superbowl. The superbowl is in February, not August.......

Davethepanther - What I want to know is if you'll still be on here talking if the Panthers have another season with 5 wins or less. If so, more power to ya.  To say other people have no idea what they're talking about though, in predicting the Panters being terrible again...that's a bit crazy.  I understand you're a fan of the team.  I also understand that Vegas oddsmakers don't know everything.  At the same time though...these guys are paid to be informed enough in their lines to make the casinos money.  They're paid to gauge not only the teams potential, but also public perception of the team in setting their odds.  The Panthers over/under in wins for this season?  4.5.  Now...what that means is either you're being just a BIT of a "homer" in your analysis, or that Panthers fans who saw the team last year and gamble, are about to make a LOT of easy money.  There is no other team in the league that has an over/under set that low.  The next lowest would be the Bengals, the Bills and the Broncos, all set at 5.5.  I've nothing for or against Carolina, so heck, if they compete for the playoffs this year...I'm glad for them and their fans.  Do I expect that though?  Absolutely not, and it has everything to do with the quarterback position. Does that make me a "hater" or someone who has "no clue"?  Hardly...just makes me realistic and in line with the public's thinking about this team.
