Rex Grossman predicts Redskins will win NFC East

If there's one thing we know about Rex Grossman, it's that he doesn't lack confidence. (John Beck, by the way, isn't short on competitive enthusiasm either.) But the prediction he dropped in a recent interview, following his ascension to the unofficial No. 1 quarterback in Washington, well, it's just delusional.

Grossman, in speaking with Kelli Johnson of CSN Washington, predicted that the Redskins would win the NFC East.

"We're fine being the sleepers right now," Grossman said. "We're just waiting in the wings waiting to take over the NFC East. No one's talking about us. IT's right where we want to be. You look at us from top-to-bottom out here, there's a bunch of great players.

"We don't need people saying we're the best right now. When it's all said and done I really feel like we're going to win the NFC East."

Um, yeah. Look, you gotta admire Grossman's confidence, however misplaced it seems.

But the odds of the Redskins winning the NFC East? Well, they're not good. And actually, if you want to put a number on them, they're 25/1, according to

That wouldn't be bad if it were their Super Bowl odds, but when Vegas drops a double-digit number on a team to win its division, it's a pretty clear-cut indicator that they won't be doing that. (The 2-14 Panthers, in fact, are only 20/1 to win the NFC South.)

Anyway, back to the Redskins. They are simply not going to win the division, regardless of the fact that Grossman's done it before.

"This offense, from top to bottom, is better than that offense I had in Chicago," Grossman said. "And the defense is going to make a ton of strides this year. I know they are. I know we're going to be a good team."

Maybe so. (Not likely, but maybe.) Predicting that the Redskins defense could suddenly turn into 2006 Bears and help a quarterback who completed 54 percent of his passes, threw 20 interceptions -- against just 23 touchdowns -- and averaged under 200 passing yards is probably closer to "foolish" than it is "bold."

But, hey, if Grossman wants to get 20/1 on any sort of bet, I'm more than happy to oblige.

Rex Grossman predicts Redskins will win NFC East

Traveljeff - excellent points!

If Grossman had said the Skins wouldn't win their division, the same writers would be all over him for lack of confidence.

What else do you expect him to say?

When I took over as coach of a last-in-the-county high school cross country team, I scheduled an early meet at the site of the State Championship because, I told my athletes, I wanted them to be familiar with the course when they were fighting for medals at the end of the year.  I knew they weren't going to win many that year, but it set a tone.  We were North County champs and 15th among the State AAAA schools within 3 years.

lol he's fat

and he thinks his D is better than the Bears of 5 years ago

Why does he still have a job?  I'd be more confident with Kellen Clemens.

Rex Grossman predicts Redskins will win NFC East

rex has really showed some potential since leaving chicago. think about it chicago went back and forth between grossman and orton because they were equally bad. then orton gets out and bam under josh mcdanials his real nfl qb. if you watched any of the texans games when lil shanhan was the offensive coordinator rex looked good. then when lil shanhan went to dc he looked even better. not saying he will be an elite qb but hecane be as good as orton if not better. its still a shame tho they didnt draft anybody to develope why rex is at the helm. makes on sense

Rex Grossman predicts Redskins will win NFC East

If the point of your article is to say that Rex Grossman has zero credibility because he is the poster boy for QB mediocrity, then write that ... don't dance around and then feign surprise when people question the purpose of the article.

Rex Grossman predicts Redskins will win NFC East

Agreed. Two days ago, Prisco wrote an article about Sam Bradford's competitiveness. In it, he applauded Bradford's comment that if the Rams don't win the superbowl, the season is a failure.

Now they slam Grossman for the same thing. Grossman has been to the superbowl with Chicago. Bradford hasn't. Grossman has won the division. Bradford hasn't. The list goes on.

Now, I don't think the Redskins win the division or the Superbowl, but if I am their coach and I hear Grossman say anything except this, I put him on the bench.

Rex Grossman predicts Redskins will win NFC East

Why is this a reason to write a article? I mean whether or not he's being a complete fool for saying this WHAT is he going to say when asked this question,,that he thinks his team is going to suck and that the fans shouldn't even bother coming to watch the Skins play this year? Must be a REALLY slow news day!!

Rex Grossman predicts Redskins will win NFC East

As a former DC resident, I can remember a time when only Skins fans themselves would annually make bold and ridiculous predictions about the team prior to a new season.  Now it seems the players themselves are drinking the same KoolAid of delusion that Redskins fans are well known for.

If I were Rex Grossman, I'd be more concerned with the prospect of getting through the entire season healthy with the beatings he's likely to take at the hands of the other teams in the division.
