Report: Mankins signs long-term deal with Pats

MankinsPosted by Josh Katzowitz

Last season, Patriots G Logan Mankins was one of the unhappiest men in the Patriots organization (probably even more unhappy than Bill Belichick whenever he has to meet with the media). Mankins believed he deserved a long-term contract extension, and he believed that New England owner Robert Kraft had intimated that he’d get one.

Just not last year, which angered Mankins so much that he refused to sign his tender of $3.26 million and then blasted the organization. He returned to the team midway through the season and played well in the second half of the year.

All of that acrimony, though, is over, as ESPN reports that Mankins and the Patriots have agreed to a six-year contract extension.

The first good sign that this year would not be a repeat of last season occurred when Mankins signed his $10.73 million tender and dropped his request for a $10 million settlement after serving as a plaintiff in the Brady v NFL case.

The new six-year deal, then, serves three purposes. It keeps one of the best guards in the NFL in New England through 2016. It keeps him happy. And it reduces his hit against the Patriots cap number for 2011, which would have been about $10 million.

Of course, today’s news shouldn’t be a surprise.

After all, Kraft had this to say Wednesday when meeting with the media: “If I have a vote, it will get done. But the other side has to want it, too. But it’s our desire and has always been our desire. But like I tried to explain to you, you can’t sign everyone you want, so you need to plan and I think we did our planning knowing the kind of environment we were coming into. We tried to position ourselves so we had our core veterans and we could continue to sign the people we want to sign. We very much think that Logan is among the best there is at his position. We drafted him and we want him here.”

And now he’s got him.

Very glad to see Mankins sign.  Vollmer is a monster.  If Solder pans out and Cannon gets out of the woods on his cancer battle and progresses to his projections as a stout RG our line will be phenomenal for years to come.

I agree with your assessment but it wasn't Asante who let Plax score the TD.  It Ellis Hobbs... on an island with a 6'5 wideout he couldn't cover on his best day.  Asante dropped the game ending pick on that drive though.  So, there you have it.

Again, as in most cases, the Patriots appear to have played their cards exactly right. They did lose Mankins for half a year last year but he came back and played better than ever just to prove a point and the Patriots got a ton from him the last half of the season. The Pats held out to postion themselves for the then unkown new colective bargaining agreement so as not to put themselves in a bad postion. Now Mankins gets his big, well deserved deal, the Pats keep one of the top 5 guards in the pro game and everyone wins!! Mankins is happy, big Bill is happy, Kraft mac and cheese is happy, but most importantly, the fans are happy.

@ dr bones.  why would we keep asante he wanted ridiculous money is way overrated and i will never forget in the superbowl against the giants when he fell on the giants final touchdown drive and watched (asante too) as plaxico ran 10 more yards to an uncontested catch for the win and an end to our perfect season!! ill take bodden over samuel any day!

Great Move by the Pats. You could say this should have been done 2 years ago but that wouldnt of made alot of sense knowing that the CBA  was expiring. Now with Mankins back for 6 years and light here for at least 2 more years it gives Solder a chance to sit back and learn from some of the best in the game and there isnt any reason to rush his development. Pats have made a strange moves this off-season but all of been pretty good like always... They are still Top of the class.....

They should have done this back in '09 instead of throwing money away on mediocre players like Nick Kaczur. Last two years of bad blood could have been avoided.

Finally!  I'm glad they wrapped him up for six years.  Now let's play some football!
