SmithPosted by Josh Katzowitz

All along, WR Steve Smith wanted to land a new contract with the Giants. He said so in July 2010 when, after catching a franchise-record 107 passes, he said he should be given a raise on his $550,000 salary. He thought so last March, claiming that the Giants had told him they’d take care of him.

Evidently, the Giants had a different idea about Smith’s value. And probably when he'd be healthy again.

And so, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane was the first to report that the Eagles surprisingly have signed Smith to a one-year deal, giving the so-called Dream Team yet another talented piece. The Newark Star Ledger's Mike Garafolo reports that the contract is a one-year, $4 million deal (with $2 million guaranteed).

On his Facebook page, Smith wrote that Philadelphia showed him plenty of love (the bold below is mine):

"I will always cherish my time in NY and the super bowl victory.. This was obviously not an easy decision for me or something i ever expected but unfortunately the business aspect proved that the eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did.. A special thanks to my WR buddies, coach Gilbride, all of u amazing fans on here, and the entire giants organization for drafting me.. Time for a new beginning..."

He also told reporters on a conference call Wednesday that he thought he was "close" to returning to action.

Steve Smith's Eagles signing
The problem with Smith throughout his four-year career is that he’s been injury prone, particularly last season when he played only nine games after suffering a pectoral injury and then a knee injury that required the dreaded microfracture surgery.

The Giants were cautious to re-sign Smith because of that knee injury and the surgery and because Smith won't be available to start the season on the field.

Instead, Smith will get a chance to revitalize his career with Philadelphia, which has been having holdout issues with DeSean Jackson and illness issues with Jeremy Maclin (though McLane's source said the move had nothing to do with Maclin's health).

Said coach Andy Reid in a statement released by the team: "He's a Pro Bowl quality receiver that we will work into our offense as soon as he is ready to go."

You are right, I dont know about the Eagles front office. They absolutely have been frugal in the past, hence the room to add players. in addition to the 6 playes pointed out in the previous post, add to that Jason Peters 6.25million, Winston Justice's 3.7 mil, and Trent Coles 5 million and suddenly you have 9 players eating up 63.6 MILLION, OR ABOUT 53%. Leaving 56.4 million to satisfy the additonal 44 players (53 roster spots under the new CBA). IMO, that is just way too much to tie up in 9 guys.  Seems there might be dissention from some of the remaining 46 who bust thier tails just as those 9. As I said earlier, it gets worse next year, so maybe the front office is letting it hang out this year for one strong run at a ring.

Great deal if the Eagles get him on the field.  they're loaded at this position so for the 2 mill guaranteed not a huge gamble, unless of course the injury bug hits the wide outs and Smith is a no show.  Like someone wrote another great move by the Eagles, but the  game is played on the field. Vick has yet to win any playoff game of significance in his career.  Still don't believe he's a  big game QB.  That will change of course if he can get tp the Super Bowll.

Steve Smith signs 1-year deal with Eagles

All the contracts they give are front loaded. Most of the money they make is up front. The Eagles will actually have more money to spend next year. Brilliant!!

You definitely don't know about the Eagles front office. One thing they are ridiculously good at is money and the cap. If you win a trophy for that type of shit they would win every year.

How can you bash Steve Smith??? Giants jerke him around just like they are doing to Osi and pretty much everyone else...Jerry Reese has to go it's that simple...he is GARBAGE!!!! Since winning the superbowl that Acorsi built we have needed LB's after he let Mitchell go...years later we still don't have one...oh wait...we have Clint, Goff, Wilkerson...I forgot...those are STUDS that can play on ANY high school team...well...maybe not the ones in Texas...Good for Smith...he got paid...the GIANTS started over the cap and signed players just to fill the depth chart back up because they dropped guys...question is how were we over the cap and who got us there??? JERRY REESE!!!! THe guy doesn't konw jack about running a put 99.9% of the blame on Reese and .1% on Smith for not getting more MONEY!!!!
