SmithPosted by Josh Katzowitz

All along, WR Steve Smith wanted to land a new contract with the Giants. He said so in July 2010 when, after catching a franchise-record 107 passes, he said he should be given a raise on his $550,000 salary. He thought so last March, claiming that the Giants had told him they’d take care of him.

Evidently, the Giants had a different idea about Smith’s value. And probably when he'd be healthy again.

And so, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane was the first to report that the Eagles surprisingly have signed Smith to a one-year deal, giving the so-called Dream Team yet another talented piece. The Newark Star Ledger's Mike Garafolo reports that the contract is a one-year, $4 million deal (with $2 million guaranteed).

On his Facebook page, Smith wrote that Philadelphia showed him plenty of love (the bold below is mine):

"I will always cherish my time in NY and the super bowl victory.. This was obviously not an easy decision for me or something i ever expected but unfortunately the business aspect proved that the eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did.. A special thanks to my WR buddies, coach Gilbride, all of u amazing fans on here, and the entire giants organization for drafting me.. Time for a new beginning..."

He also told reporters on a conference call Wednesday that he thought he was "close" to returning to action.

Steve Smith's Eagles signing
The problem with Smith throughout his four-year career is that he’s been injury prone, particularly last season when he played only nine games after suffering a pectoral injury and then a knee injury that required the dreaded microfracture surgery.

The Giants were cautious to re-sign Smith because of that knee injury and the surgery and because Smith won't be available to start the season on the field.

Instead, Smith will get a chance to revitalize his career with Philadelphia, which has been having holdout issues with DeSean Jackson and illness issues with Jeremy Maclin (though McLane's source said the move had nothing to do with Maclin's health).

Said coach Andy Reid in a statement released by the team: "He's a Pro Bowl quality receiver that we will work into our offense as soon as he is ready to go."

Steve Smith signs 1-year deal with Eagles

This preseason certainly makes you wonder what Giant GM Jerry Reese is thinking. It also makes me wonder how the Eagles can afford to keep paying for
these Free Agents.

Very puzzlinmg move.... First of all to sign a guy to a one year that will inevitably start the season on the PUP is puzzling all by itself. Now you compound that by giving this deal($4 Mil) to a guy who is clearly inferior to DJax, what a slap in the kisser. NO WAY this can be sitting well with the franchise's best player. Funny thing is the Eagles can keep signing players and nothing changes the fact that a good defensive coach will eat Michael Vick up (AGAIN) come playoff time.

I think this is a smart move by the Eagles even though Stev Smith is injury proned.  It puts the pressure on Desean Jackson to stop asking for the world of a salary, it puts even more fear into other teams and fans, gives Smith a chance to prove doubters differently, and keeps the wide receiver core good no matter what happens.  The Eagles have been on a mission this offseason.

Most of us will be dead by the time the Eagles win a SB.  Too bad they're stocking up at the wrong time.  As much as it pains me to say it being a Cowboy fan, nobody in the NFC is going to stop an upright Aaron Rodgers.

Hmmm? DeSean, looks like they have a "Pro Bowl quality" reciever, and are sending you a message.  Jackson has to be a cancer of some sort. Surely they would pay him (even though he should honor his CONTRACT) if it were good for the team. What am I missing here? maybe someone in Philly knows what is really going on?

He already has a Super Bowl ring...
But I guess another wouldn't hurt.  Amazing how the Giants GM keeps passing on guys and letting them sign elsewhere when he has no other alternatives.  Kevin Boss to the Raiders, Plax to Philly, and now Smith also to the Eagles.  Going to be a long season for the G-Men.

Can we stop with this Dream Team reference all ready. My lord... the guy was saying it was like a dream team meaning one he thought he would always want to be a part of... not a reference to the talent.

Welcome Steve Smith... now could we please square away the Desean Jackson situation.

Yeah the Eagles now have the talent to get that SB Ring. Nice pickup again for the Eagles.
