SmithPosted by Josh Katzowitz

All along, WR Steve Smith wanted to land a new contract with the Giants. He said so in July 2010 when, after catching a franchise-record 107 passes, he said he should be given a raise on his $550,000 salary. He thought so last March, claiming that the Giants had told him they’d take care of him.

Evidently, the Giants had a different idea about Smith’s value. And probably when he'd be healthy again.

And so, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane was the first to report that the Eagles surprisingly have signed Smith to a one-year deal, giving the so-called Dream Team yet another talented piece. The Newark Star Ledger's Mike Garafolo reports that the contract is a one-year, $4 million deal (with $2 million guaranteed).

On his Facebook page, Smith wrote that Philadelphia showed him plenty of love (the bold below is mine):

"I will always cherish my time in NY and the super bowl victory.. This was obviously not an easy decision for me or something i ever expected but unfortunately the business aspect proved that the eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did.. A special thanks to my WR buddies, coach Gilbride, all of u amazing fans on here, and the entire giants organization for drafting me.. Time for a new beginning..."

He also told reporters on a conference call Wednesday that he thought he was "close" to returning to action.

Steve Smith's Eagles signing
The problem with Smith throughout his four-year career is that he’s been injury prone, particularly last season when he played only nine games after suffering a pectoral injury and then a knee injury that required the dreaded microfracture surgery.

The Giants were cautious to re-sign Smith because of that knee injury and the surgery and because Smith won't be available to start the season on the field.

Instead, Smith will get a chance to revitalize his career with Philadelphia, which has been having holdout issues with DeSean Jackson and illness issues with Jeremy Maclin (though McLane's source said the move had nothing to do with Maclin's health).

Said coach Andy Reid in a statement released by the team: "He's a Pro Bowl quality receiver that we will work into our offense as soon as he is ready to go."

Steve Smith signs 1-year deal with Eagles

How are the eagles the clear favorite when there offence is the same as last year and they lost in the first round? they signed 30 year old men that are suppose to make an impact.. as an eagles fan u need to open your eyes and witness reality.. most of these players are only going to be here for one year.. vick this year is making 14.5.. you dont think he is going to get 18 somewhere else? deshawn jackson been underpaid for his whole career you think he aint gonna get paid? thats just 2 players that one will get a 4 million raise next year the other maybe a 12 million.. now look on defence.. your going to start a rookie linebacker and a defense that doesnt have a clear leader.. who is the defensive captain on the eagles? whats his name? Im not impressed if anything the patriots have a dream team..

I have to agree with Joe Gabs. I've seen many teams assemble big names only to fail to live up to their expectations. The eagles have done a good job during the off season, but lets see what happens when they play the games. I am disappointed the Gmen did not resign Smith he has been a dynamic player, especially on 3rd Down. Let's hope Manningham can assume his role.

If you are not man enough to admit that what they've done this offseason makes them the CLEAR FAVORITE ( on paper ) to win it all,

A little overstated...Vegas does not even have the Eagles as the favorites...they are the clear favorites to win their division. However, Green bay is still the favorites to win the NFC (even on paper) while the Eagles are clearly a team that should challange for the NFC title (on paper).

Bottom line......Pats and Eagles continue shoving it up the a#s of BOTH New York football teams.....

And how do the Eagles and Pats do that to the Giants exactly? Last I checked the Giants beat the Pats in the Super Bowl ruining their chances at perfection only 3 seasons agao..when was the last time the Eagles won a Super Bowl.....perhaps this year but that remains to be seen.

Silly comment with little relevance.

I couldn't agree with you more. I've been a die heart Giants fan and although it KILLS me to see some EXCELLENT players sign with other teams, I'm sure this all happened for a reason.. (I Hope) LoL ... Plaxico, Boss, & Now Smith... Doesn't make sense, but at the same time it does.. I hope the G-Men can get back on track and make it deep into the post season. I still love the Giants and they will ALWAYS be #1 in my book.

Eagles fans should be VERY happy with the offseason moves they've made! I have better class then to talk trash... History and Super Bowls explains it ALL.. LETS GO G-MEN!!

I think it is hilarious, all the one lined comments "Eagles suck".  If you are not man enough to admit that what they've done this offseason makes them the CLEAR FAVORITE ( on paper ) to win it all, you are not a fan nor know anything about football.  The names they have signed are big talent, whether they can put it all together is another story.  I personally hope they don't ( GO FALCONS) but I know one thing, it is going to be exciting to watch.  It feels like an eternity since I last watched a game....BRING ON THE SEASON!!

This shows the vocabulary limitations of Cowboy fans.  Hope Jerry can sign up some college soccer games to fill that stadium. The only thing looking positve for the Cowboys this season is Romo got married so he may concentrate on football instead of whoring around.

THE GIANTS SHOULD BE THE DREAM TEAM CUZ THEIR OFFICE IS ASLEEP

Really? So not resigning an injury proned WR coming off a serious knee injury who won't be able to start the season on the field after seeing Mario Manningham play to the level he played last year in addition to drafting a WR is bad?...Perhaps you're asleep when it comes to the details of certain football teams.

This is not to take anything away from the Eagles and what they have done this offseason. Signing Smith is a low risk high reward for them. The Giants have depth at the position and with limited cap space and more important areas to focus on it did not make sense to resign Smith.
