SmithPosted by Josh Katzowitz

All along, WR Steve Smith wanted to land a new contract with the Giants. He said so in July 2010 when, after catching a franchise-record 107 passes, he said he should be given a raise on his $550,000 salary. He thought so last March, claiming that the Giants had told him they’d take care of him.

Evidently, the Giants had a different idea about Smith’s value. And probably when he'd be healthy again.

And so, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane was the first to report that the Eagles surprisingly have signed Smith to a one-year deal, giving the so-called Dream Team yet another talented piece. The Newark Star Ledger's Mike Garafolo reports that the contract is a one-year, $4 million deal (with $2 million guaranteed).

On his Facebook page, Smith wrote that Philadelphia showed him plenty of love (the bold below is mine):

"I will always cherish my time in NY and the super bowl victory.. This was obviously not an easy decision for me or something i ever expected but unfortunately the business aspect proved that the eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did.. A special thanks to my WR buddies, coach Gilbride, all of u amazing fans on here, and the entire giants organization for drafting me.. Time for a new beginning..."

He also told reporters on a conference call Wednesday that he thought he was "close" to returning to action.

Steve Smith's Eagles signing
The problem with Smith throughout his four-year career is that he’s been injury prone, particularly last season when he played only nine games after suffering a pectoral injury and then a knee injury that required the dreaded microfracture surgery.

The Giants were cautious to re-sign Smith because of that knee injury and the surgery and because Smith won't be available to start the season on the field.

Instead, Smith will get a chance to revitalize his career with Philadelphia, which has been having holdout issues with DeSean Jackson and illness issues with Jeremy Maclin (though McLane's source said the move had nothing to do with Maclin's health).

Said coach Andy Reid in a statement released by the team: "He's a Pro Bowl quality receiver that we will work into our offense as soon as he is ready to go."

Steve Smith signs 1-year deal with Eagles

Eagles fans should be happy.  Their front office has done a great job this off season making them (in my eyes) the clear favorites in the NFC East.  But lets not get crazy, Eagles fans, with the trash talking about how you have owned the Giants.  As a forty year old guy, I've watched my Giants win 3 Superbowls.  One, the one that every Eagles fan on the planet said they couldn't win, was not too long ago. What, exactly have the Eagles done?  How about you win something and then we'll talk.

Steve Smith signs 1-year deal with Eagles

I think this is a good signing for the Eagles. He is an established Wide Reciever who can help out the younger guys.

Steve Smith signs 1-year deal with Eagles

Cpt ATL, I'm just wondering why you think you're a better cap manager than the guys getting paid in Philadelphia.

The comments in this thread keep getting more ridiculous. The Eagles are getting compared to the Redskins, the Heat, and now the Cowboys? Wait, WHAT!? Can anyone, someone, please explain to me these comparisons. People just throw these comparisons out there then run away from their comments. Don't just say they're "signing all these big names". Tell me the "big names" Washington and Dallas have signed, where they were at in their career, how much was spent or traded to acquire them, and what need they met on said team. The Eagle hate/envy/fear is strong. There's no other way to describe how an already good, Division winner upgrades all over the field with Pro-Bowlers and solid starters (without losing anything, mind you) and still be criticized. I just don't get it. I guess that's just the nature of the beast. We're a society that likes to see people/things fail. Nothing is ever good enough, and when it's too good to be true, find a way to knock it down. This is not arrogance speaking, it's a fan of a team that went out and did EVERYTHING in it's power to put together the best possible roster it could speaking.

Again, the biggest thing being overlooked here -- which makes the Eagles a different animal than the teams they're being compared too -- is the fact that they LOST NOTHING. They managed their cap well and got the most out of an expendable commodity. They had the offseason fans and "teams dream" of. Wink I had to.

The guy was signed for depth as the Eagles have small receivers that are subject to injury...stop it with the "dream team" nonsense.  Just another signing, if it were any other team that signed Smith the event would be buried at the end of a much longer Uminyora article.

Eagles and the Phillies are both putting out all the stops. They're management teams seem pretty smart and proactive. I can understand a free agent wanting to sign with the Eagles. They look very formidable this year. Of course, championships aren't won with checkbooks and paper. Smith figures the Giants are a sinking ship, so I can't blame him.

People are idiots.  The media started the "Dream Team" label.  Vince Young was interviewed the first day he was in camp.  During that interview Young was asked what he thought about being on the Eagles.  He said, "Oh this is like a Dream Team."  Young was exceited about leaving his loser Titans and getting to an organization that has a chance.  The media just grabs that one statement and runs with it.  Young is not the Eagles spokes person and certainly was not representing the thoughts of his fellow teammates, the coaches and upper management.  It was one sentance by Vince Young, and a bunch of dopes run around flapping their jaw about what the "Eagles" are saying.  Give me a break!  Who else on the Eagles is walking around calling himself part of the dream team?  Nobody!

The media has nothing to do except make stories.  They generate excitement and controversey, so morons get all jacked up and tune in to watch games and watch their tv shows.  They get ratings and ratings makes them money.  Does anyone really think that the Eagles players and management even want the title of dream team?  It's hard enough to win in the NFL without putting a big bullseye on your own head.  There is no way the Eagles management wants that.  Anyway, a lot of folks here on CBS seem to have nothing better to moan about.  Believe what you want to believe if you can't form your own intelligent opinions.
