All along, WR Steve Smith wanted to land a new contract with the Giants. He said so in July 2010 when, after catching a franchise-record 107 passes, he said he should be given a raise on his $550,000 salary. He thought so last March, claiming that the Giants had told him they’d take care of him.

Evidently, the Giants had a different idea about Smith’s value. And probably when he'd be healthy again.

And so, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane was the first to report that the Eagles surprisingly have signed Smith to a one-year deal, giving the so-called Dream Team yet another talented piece. The Newark Star Ledger's Mike Garafolo reports that the contract is a one-year, $4 million deal (with $2 million guaranteed).

On his Facebook page, Smith wrote that Philadelphia showed him plenty of love (the bold below is mine):

"I will always cherish my time in NY and the super bowl victory.. This was obviously not an easy decision for me or something i ever expected but unfortunately the business aspect proved that the eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did.. A special thanks to my WR buddies, coach Gilbride, all of u amazing fans on here, and the entire giants organization for drafting me.. Time for a new beginning..."

He also told reporters on a conference call Wednesday that he thought he was "close" to returning to action.

Steve Smith's Eagles signing
The problem with Smith throughout his four-year career is that he’s been injury prone, particularly last season when he played only nine games after suffering a pectoral injury and then a knee injury that required the dreaded microfracture surgery.

The Giants were cautious to re-sign Smith because of that knee injury and the surgery and because Smith won't be available to start the season on the field.

Instead, Smith will get a chance to revitalize his career with Philadelphia, which has been having holdout issues with DeSean Jackson and illness issues with Jeremy Maclin (though McLane's source said the move had nothing to do with Maclin's health).

Said coach Andy Reid in a statement released by the team: "He's a Pro Bowl quality receiver that we will work into our offense as soon as he is ready to go."

Steve Smith signs 1-year deal with Eagles

Anyone claiming to be a Giants fan that should see that Steve Smith will NEVER BE ANYWHERE NEAR Hakeem Nicks and Manningham (and i think even Ramses Barden will be better than Smith by year's end)

yeah, when Giants had no one Smith was the man, but as soon as we drafted Nicks, we all knew who the 'man' was going to be.  anyone that's seen Manningham's ability to accelerate-stop-n-go in split second should know that Smith will never be as good

kinda reminds me of a few years ago when all the 'experts' were predicting Giants' lack of WR's will be their downfall...   and everyone thought my friends and i were crazy for claiming that WRs will be the Giants strength...

it'll be the same thing again.  by year's end everyone will know Giants have one of the best receiving corps and no one will remember Steve Smith...

and oh yeah, it won't matter because JPP will be leading the D-line that'll be one of the best ever...

Steve Smith signs 1-year deal with Eagles

As an Eagles fan,  all I ask for is that the front office put the best product they can on the field and they have done just that.  It is now up to the players to go out and perform.  Regardless of what anyone says, this team is guaranteed nothing.  The Packers are a very good team still and the Patriots in the AFC are well put together too.  In our own division, there are 2 other good teams with Dallas and the NYG.  As usual the front office has done its job.  Steve Smith is a nice addition and if DeSean decides to walk next off season,  Smith will resign because the Eagles showed him some love when no one else would.  I am sure Eagles fans will be dissapointed if the team loses in the playoffs, but in the NFL, the best team rarely wins the Super Bowl.  Someone gets hot at the right time and you can pile up a bunch of wins and a championship that way.  I am just hopeful that the Eagles can put together that string of victories when they need to.  There is no sense in talking about this until December and January.  Good luck Eagles......

Only the W's matter... Dallas fans learned that lesson last season.  You would think with being a copy cat league the Eagles would have learned that lesson.  Also the lesson from the Miami Heat of the NBA.

I'llguess we'll see week 17 if this a had been a dream for the Eagles or not.

i'm feeling good about the Birds...   But let's get a quality Linebacker added to the mix and then the defense will be awesome...  I'm not sure about their run stopping ability.  I like Casey Matthews but he is really small compared to his brother Clay.

All of the contracts, except for Asomugha, can be opted out of by the Eagles after next year. That's Babin, Jenkins and whomever else they gave muliple years too. If there is ONE thing the Eagles do well, it's handle the cap. What unprecedented is this: They NEVER have had to spend at least 90% of the cap before, so they were ALWAYS hovering around 20mm under. Now that they must spend 90% minimum, this is what you get. They let a host of players go, and for good reason. So before you going saying they are just signing everyone avalable, check your facts and come see me.

Steve Smith signs 1-year deal with Eagles

I am a Giants' fan and it is a little disturbing that these talented players are going.  Then again, they've won the Super Bowl 3 times in the past 25 years without a key offensive player who ranked in the top 3 in the league, including winning the year after letting Tiki Barber go away.  Obviously they know what they are doing more than the Eagles, who have zero Super Bowl wins.

The Eagles can sign whoever they want but you don't win the Super Bowl in July and August.  Its a lot of big names, but the big names have to play together as a team or they don't win.  Plus they need to be healthy, and Mike Vick is a huge injury risk at QB.  The Patriots have been able to do that kind of thing too and gotten malcontents to buy into a team concept but they may have bitten more off than they can chew this summer.

Have the Eagles built up their fans' expectations to the point where anything less than a 16-0 and a Super Bowl win is a complete and utter failure?  Although personally I'd love to see it, I don't envy anyone in that organization if they lose at home in the playoffs in front of 70,000 angry disappointed Philly fans, or if they tank this season and don't make the playoffs at all.

I'm not an eagles fan or hater, but it looks to me as though they are building a big bubble that will burst, sending their fans in an uproar like no other.  I'd hate to be Santa in Philly, when they're trying to survive an extended period with Vince Young as the QB.  Losing Kolb will have a bigger impact than any addition the Eagles make.  I hope I'm wrong, as I continually root for Steeler / Eagle Super Bowl matchup.

Steve Smith signs 1-year deal with Eagles

The Eagles have just added another "bullet" to their "gun(Vick)" for the upcoming season. Once again the Eagles are doing everything that they can to load up their team for a possible Super Bowl run. The Giants made a big mistake by letting Smith go to a rival in the same division. Maybe the Giants know something that the Eagles don' tknow about Smith and his previous injury. I'm just wondering how are they going to have all of their receivers on the field at the same time? This move is probably an "insurance move" just in case that Maclin or one of their other receiver goes down due to an injury during the season.Cool
