Steve Smith signs 1-year deal with Eagles

SmithPosted by Josh Katzowitz

All along, WR Steve Smith wanted to land a new contract with the Giants. He said so in July 2010 when, after catching a franchise-record 107 passes, he said he should be given a raise on his $550,000 salary. He thought so last March, claiming that the Giants had told him they’d take care of him.

Evidently, the Giants had a different idea about Smith’s value. And probably when he'd be healthy again.

And so, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane was the first to report that the Eagles surprisingly have signed Smith to a one-year deal, giving the so-called Dream Team yet another talented piece. The Newark Star Ledger's Mike Garafolo reports that the contract is a one-year, $4 million deal (with $2 million guaranteed).

On his Facebook page, Smith wrote that Philadelphia showed him plenty of love (the bold below is mine):

"I will always cherish my time in NY and the super bowl victory.. This was obviously not an easy decision for me or something i ever expected but unfortunately the business aspect proved that the eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did.. A special thanks to my WR buddies, coach Gilbride, all of u amazing fans on here, and the entire giants organization for drafting me.. Time for a new beginning..."

He also told reporters on a conference call Wednesday that he thought he was "close" to returning to action.

Steve Smith's Eagles signing
The problem with Smith throughout his four-year career is that he’s been injury prone, particularly last season when he played only nine games after suffering a pectoral injury and then a knee injury that required the dreaded microfracture surgery.

The Giants were cautious to re-sign Smith because of that knee injury and the surgery and because Smith won't be available to start the season on the field.

Instead, Smith will get a chance to revitalize his career with Philadelphia, which has been having holdout issues with DeSean Jackson and illness issues with Jeremy Maclin (though McLane's source said the move had nothing to do with Maclin's health).

Said coach Andy Reid in a statement released by the team: "He's a Pro Bowl quality receiver that we will work into our offense as soon as he is ready to go."

Good pickup who will fit the Eagles system well if he stays healthy. Now they better pay DeSean Jackson. They don't want a disgruntled Jackson with Steve Smith potentially making 4x his salary. That's can't be good for team chemistry. Pay Jackson and move on.

Steve Smith signs 1-year deal with Eagles

I don't throw the "H" word around freely like most do, but after reading every post in this thread, there's A LOT of haters here -- my god. We've got cap experts and cliches galore. Peter King wrote an article about the Eagles cap that explains how this is happening. The Eagles came into the off-season WELL UNDER the cap and put themselves in a position to be buyers. I suggest some of you google it and take a look.

The Washington Redskins and Miami Heat comparisons are utterly ridiculous. I would love for someone to make a logical argument for how they're even remotely similar scenarios. The Redskins sign players on the tail end of their careers and the Heat thought 3 players and 9 bodies could win them a Championship -- in Miami's case, it was addition by subtraction.

It's obvious how nervous this team makes you haters.

Mario Manningham is better!!! The Giants made the smart move and not sign this guy who had one really good year, and then the defense's started playing his and Eli's route. I'm not saying he's not good, but who knows when he will play
Stupid post. The guy caught 107 passes last year, so you plug this guy into phillies west coast offense, spread the field 5 wr, with avant maclin jackson and smith, with celek running the middle, wow im glad my jets dont play in the nfc east, let alone the nfc, because vick is going to be scary good this year with all these weapons (barring no injury). I know it sucks that a rival snagged a good receiver, but give the guy some credit as a solid receiver

iI hate the fact that steve smith is gone but actually loving the fact that now my fave victor cruz will more than likely get a chance to play. he runs good routes and has jus as good of hands as smith but is much faster. so as sad as iI am to see him go iI am happy for cruz to shine. iI can no longer root for steve as long as he is a eagle. big blue still rules this division

Newdeal, Normally 4 million is not alot for a healthy starter, but it is more than Maclin and Avant combined. And 4 times as much as DeSean Jackson (about 900k less than all 3 combined). Something is very strange in the Philly WR Corps.
