'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco are now Patriots. This is because, we're all told and we all believe, Bill Belichick is a genius, capable of controlling anyone that enters his locker room and turning a malcontent into a productive player.

But Dan Pompei, writing at the National Football Post, says the Patriots may have other ideas, and that he was told last week that "one or both" of the dynamic duo could be cut before the season begins.

"One NFL executive familiar with the Patriots ways told me he believes one or both of the big name acquisitions will be cut before the season starts," Pompei writes. "The front office man thinks coach Bill Belichick will use the controversial players to help control and send a message to his locker room."

That either could be cut isn't that shocking -- as we've previously noted, both Haynesworth and Ochocinco restructured their deals. Haynesworth is owed almost zero (!) dollars for 2011 if he's cut, and Ocho will make just $2.5 million.

Both players have their deals set up so that the money would spike in 2012 and 2013 ... if they stay around.

So will they? Well, maybe not. After all, the reason both Ocho and Big Al were such "smart additions" is that they're cheap, talented options who can still produce if they manage to fall in line.

Patriots Preseason

For my money, Haynesworth seems the more likely fella to get cut. Belichick has always been enamored of Ochocinco, who actually fits what the Patriots need offensively.

That being said, this could all be another grand scheme orchestrated by Belichick to motivate his newly acquired, low-paid, big-name veterans. (Though that's not likely; but it would be amusing.) Or it could, as Pompei was told, be designed to motivate the rest of the team.

But what it really boils down to is whether or not Belichick believes that Haynesworth and Ocho can contribute to helping this team win a Super Bowl in 2011 -- as our own Pete Prisco writes, the "real message" sent by cutting either/or of the new additions is that they can't help achieve that goal.

The money they could and should get in 2012 and 2013 is irrelevant right now, as it's certainly not guaranteed to be there at the end of the year.

And, for all we know, it might be off the table by the end of the preseason.

'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

After going 14-2 last year?  You may be delusional and possibly drinking the Jets Kool Aid, but they still are the team to beat in the AFC.

'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

I'm confused. CBS Sports' Mike Freeman told me this about Albert Haynesworth a little more than two weeks ago:

"In New England, he'll turn into the best defensive lineman in football.

The move, first reported by ESPN and confirmed by me, is typical Bill Belichick. And it will work. Because this is what Belichick does. He takes reclamation projects, jerks and castoffs, like , shines them up, and turns them into Pro Bowlers.

There is no question -- no question at all -- that Haynesworth will be a great player once again the way he was in Tennessee. And all the Patriots will have given up is a fifth round pick."

Regarding the notion that Belichick traded for these guys to cut them is ridiculous.Belichick doesnt need a secret tragedy to put a winning football team together, this is not a Harry Potter book people. This is a top notch coach in a top notch organization that knows how to get players to play. And I might add , in the right positions to win. Haynesworth is a stud DT , any smart coach would want him. Is he a bit volitile at times, probably. But Belichick doesnt need a magic potion to control him. Now Ochocinco is another story, a good one. No, a great one. Because this guy is a fantastic WR. Not his fault the Bengals are terrible and Palmer threw to the opposing team more then his own. In New England, Ochocinco will be very productive and show the league what a top level wideout can do on a good team with a excellant QB. Lastly to JUSTDUMB, ( justjoe) you need to turn off The Veiw and start paying attention. Michael Vick was amazing in his return to professional football last year and will continue to thrive this year. All Reid has done was make the playoffs every year, yeah, he must be terrible. When you put down your milk glass and start pulling your pants up like a big boy someone might take your ignorance serious.

Supposedly, the reason given by this unnamed executive who apparently loves spilling the beans to reporters is that Belichick has to control and send a merssage to his locker room.  As if he has absolutely no control of his locker room now.  Sheesh!

It would make sense for Belichik to consider cutting Fat Albert but keep Ochocinco.  He has Tom Brady to police his offense and keep malcontents in line, see Randy Moss as well as getting the most out of them.  He was hoping a change of scenery would reinspire Haynesworth but that hasn't been the case and he doesn't have the guys like Vrabel, Bruschi, and Harrison to keep the defense in line so no productivity or motivation, Albert must go.

Not a Cowboys fan but ask them how it feels to be picked to win.  Only in years when they are not picked, they do well.  So based on this logic I will say Vick gets hurt and Young is a .500 QB at best. So the divisional finals will be as follows; Dallas (10-6), NY Giants (10-6), Philly (8-8), Washington (4-12). The media always picks a team and runs with them and never take the favorite as this sport I believe is partly controlled by Vegas.  Just my opinion.  Look at the Madden cover curse, it goes all the way back to Priest Holmes.  Hmmm.  More than just a cooincidence don't you think?  Think about it.  Where would we be without our Monday morning watercooler talk? If you had a multibillion dollar product ,wouldn't you want to control your investment? The media is in on it too.  It's the biggest secret going these days.  The government is in on it to.  Have you ever wonder why you never get all the football weekly picks right?  Not because you're not smart, because they throw in these few upsets to throw off your pool.  Once again, just my opinion.  Open your eyes people.  The gov controls everything we watch on TV.  Why wouldn't they control football?  Not a conspiracy theorist, just a realist that calls it as he sees it.  It's all in the Zebras hands.  (Refs) I'll hang up and listen, lol.

'One or both' of Ocho, Haynesworth to get cut?

I don't see Ocho getting cut - they paid him a ton up front. He'd have to just not be working at all to be kicked out after that.

Haynesworth - who knows, haven't seen him practice. One of the reasons we were so excited about the deal for him was that because of how little they gave up for him, if he didn't work out, they could cut ties. I'm still hoping he works out, but if not, they'll be fine. It's not like it was in Washington where they simply couldn't afford to cut him.
