Mark Sanchez 'wanted to fight' Rex over benching

If there's one thing we know about the NFL, it's that the New York Jets need more drama. So it's refreshing to hear that when Rex Ryan benched Mark Sanchez during the 2010 season, the young quarterback "wanted to fight" Rex, as that's unlikely to provoke any headlines or questions or noise surrounding the team.

Fortunately, that is what Sanchez said in a GQ interview that'll run this month. As you may recall, late last year with Sanchez struggling, Ryan wanted to give Mark Brunell extra reps in practice. This didn't go over well with Sanchez.

"I wanted to fight him," Sanchez said of the incident. "I was really mad."

Sanchez, who I have to suspect wasn't telling this story to create drama, also details what happened on the field when he pushed Brunell away because Rex didn't directly inform Sanchez that the veteran would see extra snaps.

"I was like, '[Rex] can come tell me,' " Sanchez says. "And [offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer] is like, 'Come on, man, don't do that.'"
New York Jets Offseason

Sanchez was, understandably, not too thrilled about being passive-aggressively benched. Ryan didn't come straight to him and inform him of the decision and even gave the press a heads-up that Sanchez might get benched before he talked to his franchise quarterback.

"Rex is super honest," Sanchez told GQ. "I wish he wasn't that honest at times, especially to say that."

"That" = "Yes" when Rex was asked if he'd consider benching Sanchez. Which is understandable -- I don't want my boss going out and complaining about me on Twitter before telling me about the problems with my work. (Of course, as you all know, there are less of those than Sanchez interceptions, obviously.)

But here's my prediction: Then when Sanchez is asked about how things went down, he'll say that the words he used were a bit misconstrued. Or that there's nothing wrong with wanting to fight your coach. (There isn't by the way, especially if it's Ryan.)

And then someone will ask Rex about this interview, and he'll say "Good! I like his attitude!"

Or something much funnier.

actually wouldn't mind seeing Rex take on Canseco...   All-Naturale/Organic (just ALOT of it) vs Steroids....  winner takes on Charlie Sheen after he snorts 26 lines...

oh and to iceman who complained about DaddyMotu not 'doing his homework'...  there is no HW to be done dude...   someone ELSE complained that Sanchez doesn't deserve to be on the cover of GQ since he's not a top QB and DaddyMoto simply brought up the point that GQ is a magazine that'll typically have WELL KNOWN (and typical somewhat good looking) guys on the cover and is not FootballWeekly...

i didn't even read the page prior, but knew right away since he did 'quote' the guy...   but a good point to bring up since while it's true that Sanchez IS NOT considered a great QB by any means, he's still not that bad and QB's playing in run heavy defense (coupled with being leashed by coordinator) in windy Giants stadium will bring any QB's numbers down

the current QB rating system rewards QB's playing in the right system, but i think ESPN has a new formula that's a lot more accurate (e.g. a QB goes 6 for 10 on 6yd completions on 3rd and 5...  QB rating will be in 60's due to low YPA, but in real life, 60% 3rd down conversion is considered pretty darn good)

Oh--- I am so sure that the reasaon this guy did not make it in Buffalo is because Joe Paterno was his college coach--how can you argue with logic like this from of all things a Cleveland Clowns fan--if that logic is true then i guess every coach over the last 10 years(or however long it has been since your incredibly bad team has beeen back), of just about every Clowns draft pick is a terrible coach being that most of their picks over those years are now asking folks if they would like to super size thier order.--

That is the only fight I can think of that would be worse than when Jose Canseco fought that 7-foot Korean.

And Suzie said to Tina, who heard something from Erika's brother, that Sanchez wanted to fight Rex, after Rex was paying more attention to Mark. No, not Sanchez silly. Why would he wanna fight over Rex over paying more attention to himself. The other Mark.

I was hoping with football being back we'd be able to ditch the gossip rag stuff and actually talk football.

Hey DADDYMOTU,

He's lead the team through the playoffs in his first 2 years as a starter with a rookie coach!

I don't think your work is done.  I think you forgot to do your homework!

That is what you want from your players! The want to be on the field and win. To many players just want to collect paychecks playing half hearted. This kid has heart, toughness, is smart and wants to win. Rex only made him want it more. Good job Rex! Sanchez is going to win a Superbowl at some point in his career and Ryan will have alot to do with that. Plus I think Rex would have taken Mark!
