Report: Fitzgerald's contract forbids tagging

FitzgeraldPosted by Josh Katzowitz

An interesting tidbit in the contract of Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald was discovered by the sources of’s Adam Schefter. Basically, as Schefter reports, the Cardinals will not have the opportunity to place the franchise tag on Fitzgerald once his contract expires after this season.

Obviously, this is a very Fitzgerald-friendly clause, because assuming it could slap the tag on Fitzgerald, Arizona could keep him another season without having to sign him to a long-term deal (the caveat there is that the Cardinals would have to pay him the average of the top-five WRs in the league). That still would give the team plenty of leverage.

Most players hate this maneuver because it restricts their flexibility -- where they can play and how much they can play for. But somehow, Fitzgerald got it written into his four-year, $40 million contract that he signed in 2008 that the franchise tag is moot in his case.

The Cardinals and Fitzgerald are apparently working on a long-term deal, and with the addition of a few key free agents -- which, conveniently, you can check out in our Free Agent Tracker! -- it seems that Fitzgerald actually is interested in staying in Arizona long term.

Apparently, giving Fitzgerald some help at the TE spot (Todd Heap) and the QB spot (Kevin Kolb instead of, ugh, Derek Anderson) made him more willing to tie himself to Arizona for the future.

“Life is good. WWe have a QB, TE and I couldn’t be happier with the way this team is coming together” Fitzgerald told Xtra 910 AM earlier this month.

And luckily for Fitzgerald, it sounds like the Cardinals want to give him a ton of money.

"We want Larry to end his career as an Arizona Cardinal," GM Rod Graves told The Associated Press earlier this month, "and we are prepared to make him the highest-paid player in team history and one of the highest-paid players in the NFL."

This is NOT new information. That has been said for over a year now and it was mentioned when he signed in 08. Maybe it is new for Adam to know, but it is old information. The Cardinals want Larry to stay and if he goes it is because Larry wanted out of the Phoenix sun. No other reason.

Fitz is such a class act that I don't think he'll leave Arizona over a monetary dispute.  I think he genuinely wants to remain a Cardinal.  It seems like the Cards are trying to turn the page.  They brought in Kolb (I know the jury is still out on him), they brought in Heap, and they keep trying to shore up the defense.  I think the Cards are on the right track.  Surely Fitz can see that.  It's not a situation like with Carson Palmer and the Bengals.  The Bengals haven't done anything to improve themselves.  Fitz will be a Cardinal for life.

No offensive line = Kolb on IR, Larry not happy and cardinals drafting a wide out next year to replace him.Desperate move for coach and Gm(jobs on the line) to trade for unproven QB. Neither will care when their new jobs are in college or as assistants.

A lot of points here are valid. Its true Arizona is and will be much improved this year with defensive help and getting Kolb is huge for them. Larry Fitzgerald will retire as a Cardinal. He is the face of this team and its national identity. Lastley, the point that wide outs dont take you to the big game is probably true if you compare the importance of a good quarterback with a solid ground game. Coupled with good defense, so why wrap up a lot of cap space at a position you can fill with just capable athletes . That being said, hes a special athlete and I resign him and I know Arizona feels the same way.

You can go to my Profile and see I'm a Cowboy fan and no Cardinal Homer. Yet I live in the desert and listen to the ESPN Radio channel here and the local guys that cover the Cardinals. Larry Fitzgerald isn't going anywhere because he loves it here first and second they (whether some of you ididots like it or not) they did upgrade both their defense with Patrick Peterson and Quarterback position with Kevin Kolb. Throw in the fact that 2nd teamer John Skelton looked like a totally different and dramatically improved player in the first Pre-Season game and all of the sudden the stinkin' Cardinals look highly competitive again. Relax Cardinal fans... Fitz isn't going anywhere as even the moronic Bidwells know if they let Fitz get away they will forever lose their fan base irrespective of having a new stadium etc.

As for the Moron that suggest Larry Fitzgerald is hurt a lot... Jesus... get off your butt, do some research or go back to Romper Room and sit in "Time Out" where you belong.
