For his helmet-popping hit on Bengals QB Andy Dalton in the Lions first preseason game, Lions DT Ndamukong Suh has been fined $20,000. We think.

There’s been no official confirmation by the NFL, but judging by Suh’s Twitter update, it seems to be so.

Quoth the Suh: $20,000REALLY???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #NFL #BIGFAIL"

Though the hit didn’t appear dirty, the league will almost always come down on the side of protecting the quarterbacks, and since Suh has built a nice little history of playing not-nice with the league’s QBs, the fine isn’t a surprise. Maybe he hasn’t crossed a line yet, but he’s getting ever so much closer.

And his wallet is getting lighter.

Suh apparently fined $20,000 for Dalton hit

I don't believe it's about the helmet coming off as much as the slamming him onto the ground when the ball was long gone...and I'm fairly confident that he knew the ball was gone.  He just wants to make a statement.

Suh apparently fined $20,000 for Dalton hit

Being located in Utah I got to see Andy Dalton play quite a bit on the Mountain.  His helmet came off ALL the time.  Suh got screwed on this one.  Time to start putting these players in skirts and play touch football.  No way should that have been 20k fine.  Watching the replay, Suh's right arm is on the shoulder, left arm is on the chest and his teamate bumps into them an the helmet goes flying.  Goodel is a chump, that was shown all last year and during the "lets say its a lock out so we don't have to work out" period we went through.  If thats a 20k fine, James Harrison should just donate his check salary now.

Suh apparently fined $20,000 for Dalton hit

Suh clearly didn't give Dalton the obligatory post-coital kiss and cuddle making this fine is well deserved.  Good job Goodell!

Suh apparently fined $20,000 for Dalton hit

thelach54, i respectfully disagree with your analysis.  If you watch the video again, you will see his right hand is on Dalton's shoulder pad and his left arm is across his chest.  The video does not show what popped his helmet off, but it looks to me like it was probably contact with the other defender coming in from the left defensive end.  I would have said kind of like the lid popping off when you squeeze a 2-litre Coke bottle, but i dont think that law of physics applies here.....LOL.

Ever play football as a DL?  I did.  It is tough to tell when the ball is out, especially when you are going 500 mph.

Watching the replay, I like how aggressive he is, but that was dirty play in my book. The ball was gone, he had the QB in his arms, he could just pull him down or drag him down. But he wanted the QB to fear him, so he opted for the body slam and twisting his head.

A fine line between aggresiveness and unnecessary roughness. Had Dalton been running fighting for yards, than I can understand that you would want to pick him up and plant him down but Dalton was not, he got rid of the ball and was caught.

To pick up a small player and try to break him in 2, not so tough. I understand Mr. Suh was to be the best DT in the NFL and I think he will be, but that was not the way to do it.

The people who defend Goodell and these fines could NEVER have played football. It's absurd. With Goodells logic, I should be able to fine my salespeople for causing me stress, and they should be able to fine me too! Stress is not healthy, so for all of our safety....fines should be implemented immediately! Unfortunately, it comes with the job....just like tackling in football!
Agreed.  Goodell has them on their way to wearing panties out there.  The NFL sells itself through big hits.  They use them in their media marketing and as the iconic imagery of football.  Anyone remember the shot John Elway took against the Packers as he helicoptored near the goal line in the Super Bowl?  Of course you do, because the league has played it about 10,000 times through their media outlets or through their media partners.  You want to protect the quarterback?  Quick drops, well constructed offensive lines and running the ball are a whole lot better than fining guys for legal hits.

Suh apparently fined $20,000 for Dalton hit

Suh did his job. The hit was not dirty and deserved the on field penalty and nothing further. I cannot believe that the NFL is doing this. Maybe in the future there will be a weight restriction on the DL or maybe it will be tackle football except for the QB who has flags in his waist. Absurd... Let them play.

I hope Suh appeals.

Suh apparently fined $20,000 for Dalton hit

A legitimate hit? Are you serious?  I have watched the video several times, Suh new the ball was gone, ran him down anyway, and then deliberately went around his next and twisted him to the ground, pulling his helmet off in the process, I am a Bears fan, so I know about agressive defense, and there was a time in football when it was ok to try and decapitate someone, that isn't the case anymore and there is a reason for that, these players are bigger faster and stronger than the players of those days, the fact is Dick Butkus would get his @ss kicked in todays NFL because he would be too small and too slow, and he couldn't live on just trying to put someone out of a game, or a career, that was not a legitamate hit, it was an idiotic mistake be a yound aggressive kid, the only way to get him to think before he does that again is to hit his wallet, the fine was fair, it will be more if he does it again, and maybe some games next time
