For his helmet-popping hit on Bengals QB Andy Dalton in the Lions first preseason game, Lions DT Ndamukong Suh has been fined $20,000. We think.

There’s been no official confirmation by the NFL, but judging by Suh’s Twitter update, it seems to be so.

Quoth the Suh: $20,000REALLY???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #NFL #BIGFAIL"

Though the hit didn’t appear dirty, the league will almost always come down on the side of protecting the quarterbacks, and since Suh has built a nice little history of playing not-nice with the league’s QBs, the fine isn’t a surprise. Maybe he hasn’t crossed a line yet, but he’s getting ever so much closer.

And his wallet is getting lighter.

If it was such a bad hit, where was his offensive lineman?  Used to be, if a defensive player got out of line, the offensive line would put them back in line.  Put a hit Eli Manning and see if David Diehl doesn't flatten somebody.  Let the players sort it out, it was always more fair and more entertaining.

"He had Dalton's bare head in his face...no way he didn't know the helmet was off...in plenty of time to not body slam the guy."

Have you seen Dalton's bare head? Looks a lot like a Bengals helmet! Seriously! Same color, and short hair.

Lots of players don't like to wear their chin straps.  This allows the helmet to fly off and the camera to be on their face, which will draw attention to the "I" player....

Suh apparently fined $20,000 for Dalton hit

These days you cannot even get away with a good, hard, clean hit on a QB. And any hit that might injure a QB ("Brady rule") is grounds for disciplinary action.  Of course, a bodyslam like this gets a fine! Not saying he's a criminal, but Suh is definitely an on-field thug. His unrepentant reactions to NFL discipline demonstrate that he deserves every fine. If he can pay it, that's OK by me. I like a bit of thuggery, as long as the thug in question understands that he is going to be fined.
I do hope Roger Goodell maintains the course here and doesn't try to escalate the punishment for these actions into suspensions, because Suh does not deserve that for what he does. He's not that level of dirty. Fines are sufficient.

Roger Goodell is walking a very fine line with these fines....how do you go from all out to immediately stopping?  If you watch the play, there is no way he could have known the ball was gone.  Just because this guy plays hard all the time doesn't mean he has malicious intent!!!

He played dirty in the Big XII championship game, this doesn't surprise me. Glad the league is aware of it.

if it was flacco or roethlisberger ??? I doubt there would be a fine or penalty.

this league is going to crap, not what it used to be. Its funny now watching

the draft experts talking about suh and how relentless and his motor not

stopping and how he hits and dont miss many tackles. Now the experts

should mention how can these rookies go from all out to STOP .

Why can't somebody design a helmet that won't come off?
