For his helmet-popping hit on Bengals QB Andy Dalton in the Lions first preseason game, Lions DT Ndamukong Suh has been fined $20,000. We think.

There’s been no official confirmation by the NFL, but judging by Suh’s Twitter update, it seems to be so.

Quoth the Suh: $20,000REALLY???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #NFL #BIGFAIL"

Though the hit didn’t appear dirty, the league will almost always come down on the side of protecting the quarterbacks, and since Suh has built a nice little history of playing not-nice with the league’s QBs, the fine isn’t a surprise. Maybe he hasn’t crossed a line yet, but he’s getting ever so much closer.

And his wallet is getting lighter.

Suh apparently fined $20,000 for Dalton hit

I have watched this play over and over again, and I love the intesity of this guy. Suh is a beast, he is 6'4" and over 300lbs. but he moves like he is much smaller. At least he wraps ppl up when he tackles them. I think the penalty was the correct call, but the fine is not. You cannot ask someone that is 300lbs. to just stop as soon as the whistle blows. I can see that Suh threw Dalton down, but that is his job. Its easy to say "It was obvious the helmet was off" when you are watching the play through a camera lense and in slow motion. But from Suh's POV, how was he supposed to know the helmet was off when the game moves at that speed??? I couldnt even tell when I watched it in real speed until I saw Dalton getting up without a helmet. It all happened in about 1/2 a second, and everyone just expects Suh to not only slow down 300lbs. of pure beast, but stop it all together and just lay Dalton down like a baby in a crib. Football is a fast-paced and violent sport, you cannot ask a man that has been taught to hit the qb all his life to just stop doing it. It is an intense game, I think this kid will get the Defensive Player of the Year award at some point in his carreer, and from a position that is VERY hard to do it at. I love his intensity and hope he keeps it coming!!! He is a man among boys at this point, and I for one love it. Being a Lions fan it is nice to see a change on the defensive side of the ball. He gets the rest of the defense AMPED everytime he has a QB snack, and it WILL bring the Lions up to a playoff team, and a division winning team. Maybe not this year, and really probably not this year, with Green Bay in the division, but soon. If Stafford stays healthy this year, then they will be good. And if Stafford hurts his shoulder again, then it is time to move on and find a new QB. Either way, Detroit is on the upswing and they will be a team to compete in the playoffs within the next 5 years.

Suh apparently fined $20,000 for Dalton hit

It is time for the NFL to put flags on the QB's and let them play flag football.  In this way, the NFL won't have to ever worry about their STAR power QB's ever getting hurt.  And for us fans, the NFL will become the NOT FOR LONG league.

I am normally against these kinds of fines and believe the league is going way too far to "protect" QBs. I agree with this one though. It was obvious thet Dalton's helmet was off. Not to mention that the resaoni his helmet came off was from the chokehold that Suh had on him. Then, he could have simply tackled Dalton and not body slammed a helmetless, defenseless player.

The helmet came off and at that point the whistle blew because the QB was in the grasp, Suh should have let go the second the helmet came off.

You're asking a man that is 6'4 and just over 300 pounds playing a violent sport to just stop on a dime the second a whistle blows?  Give me a break.... that's a little tougher to do then you think.  I just watched that hit again and all I have to say is compared to some of the hits we're going to see every single week in the NFL that hit was closer to a massage then it was dirty.

If you think teams cant win a super bowl without a BIG ONE at qb then apparently you havent been watching my friend. Giants won one with Eli who isnt even a top 10 qb. Ravens did it with trent dilfer. Bucs did it with Brad Johnson. So it can be done without a stud qb.

Fair enough.  Yes, it has happened.  But it doesn't happen very often, the odds are stacked against a team that doesn't have a star quarterback.  The teams you mentioned won the superbowl in 2001, 2003 and 2008.   Actually they are the only 3 in the last 20 years that have one a superbowl without a stud qb.  So even though it has happened and it is possible, it's not very likely.

And yes, the pussification of the NFL continues.

Just put skirts on the lads already and the QB in a friggin pope like protector box.

Ridiculous.

Easily a finedable offense by Suh.  The helmet came off and at that point the whistle blew because the QB was in the grasp, Suh should have let go the second the helmet came off. One poster said he did not touch the head, well guess what the helmetless head was slammed to the turf, this league is fighting concusion lawsuits right now and this kind of thing will not be tollerated. If there was no fine or flag thrown on this play the NFL gives the pplayers sueing the NFL another piece of game footage to show in court of how they do nothing to protect the players.
