Patriots RB Danny Woodhead’s helmet was taken away from him by trainers Thursday night after he was crushed on a Patriots punt by Buccaneers S Devin Holland, meaning two things happened on the play: Holland could face a fine, and it might be a little while before Woodhead is cleared to play again.

While Woodhead covered a punt midway through the fourth quarter, Holland blasted him in a blind-side hit that appeared like a helmet to helmet blow. Woodhead, who remained on his stomach for a few seconds after the hit, tried leaving the field, but he was extremely wobbly and was soon surrounded by his teammates. Trainers eventually walked him off the field, and when they got to the sideline, they took away his helmet.

After the game, Woodhead told reporters he was fine.

While working with the first team offense in the Patriots 31-14 win against Tampa Bay, Woodhead gained 63 yards on five carries and looked just as good as he did last year in his breakout rookie season.

Until Holland smashed him. And it might mean Holland is going to be hearing from the commissioner’s office sooner rather than later.

Danny Woodhead smashed on punt return (VIDEO)

He doesn't have to pay the fine if he is cut. Fines come out of NFL salary only.

The fact that his helmet was broken on this his shows how hard it was.  The fines need to be a pecentage of salary and a game suspension. to make it fair offending player Must file appeal within 24 hours of teh fine and league rule on appeal with in 24 hours of teh appeal and all suspension would take place in the next game. If player has two offences he should be ejected from that game immediatly - why should only the injured player and his team lose a player. If player has 3rd offence in single season should have fine and be suspended for 4 games and if not enough games remain in regular season be ineligible for playoffs and serve remainder of suspended games at start of next regular season. and not permitted to play in any pre-season games. illegal hits and reckless play needs to be punished in a way it hurts the player and his team, maybe then it will stop.

Danny Woodhead smashed on punt return (VIDEO)

So here's a question. Should this guy get fined he'd probably get a $20k fine or thereabouts. To a guy like this who is an undrafted free agent rookie, $20k is the megabucks (unless he went to THE U :) Anyway, if this guy is lucky enough to make the practice squad he'll get around $86k for the year. $20/$86 is almost 25% of his pay for the entire year. When a guy like Suk or Harrison gets fined $20k that's walk around $$. They make in the millions. Should fines be a % of the guy's pay or flat amounts?

Danny Woodhead smashed on punt return (VIDEO)

Great post BestinBro,

My point exactly.  Woodhead should not have been in the game.  Preseason football in prior years(yes, this year is a bit different) is a great time to evaluate personnel, especially undrafted and late round picks.  I would think the fourth quarter in a blowout(preseason mind you) is ideal for throwing in scrubs, not to mention a punt for God's sake!!!!!  So, Orr-for-Prepschool, while they may not have been running up the score per se, running your starters out there against scrubs for Tampa doesn't give you much of a sense on how your talent is evolving.  Unless the Pats are practicing against high school teams during the week.
