Posted by Ryan WilsonThere were concerns early in training camp that Chiefs rookie first-round pick Jonathan Baldwin was struggling to beat press coverage. This is a problem because a lot of NFL teams play press coverage, and even more teams will employ it until Baldwin shows he can get open.
This falls squarely under "silver linings," but it appears that the Kansas City coaches don't have to worry about Baldwin getting off the line of scrimmage, at least for the next few weeks. According to report from Nick Wright of 610 radio in Kansas City, Baldwin could miss the rest of the preseason (and maybe longer) due to a wrist injury suffered during a locker room brawl with veteran running back Thomas Jones.
Not helping Baldwin's transition from college standout to another one of the guys in an NFL locker room (again, via Wright): "What I'm hearing on Baldwin: 'He's as advertised. Diva, spoiled, doesn't wanna listen. Can run a go and a slant, and doesn't wanna work.'"
This revelation makes you wonder what general manager Scott Pioli saw in Baldwin to make him worth a first-round pick. Forget that Baldwin allegedly can't beat press coverage (maybe the defenses he faced in college played off-coverage because of his big-play ability), but how can Pioli not know about the perception that Baldwin is a spoiled diva "who doesn't wanna listen?"
Either way, this is terrible news for a team that was embarrassed at home last week by the Buccaneers, 25-0. And it doesn't get easier: the Chiefs face the Ravens in Baltimore on Friday night.
