Todd Haley now upset with John Harbaugh

Todd Haley and John Harbaugh share a handshake and some words (AP).Posted by Josh Katzowitz

During Friday's preseason telecast between the Chiefs and the Ravens, the commentators wondered how Kansas City coach Todd Haley would react to a late Baltimore timeout and a touchdown run by RB Anthony Allen with eight seconds to play in the Ravens 31-14 win.

The producer even made sure to catch the postgame handshake between Haley and Ravens coach John Harbaugh as the two had a longer-than-normal conversation.

Sure enough, Haley was upset, which led Harbaugh to say this to reporters after the game.

"I want to apologize to the Chiefs if they feel like we were not doing the right thing at the end of the game," Harbaugh said, via MASN Sports. "That wasn't the mindset, OK? The mindset was -- this is the preseason. If this had been the regular season, we would've been on a knee. The idea in that situation is to give those young guys who work hard and who are trying to make a football team -- this football team or another football team -- to play the whole 60 minutes and give them a chance to show what they can do. Offensive line, running backs, everybody.

"I know that's debatable, I know there's a point of view both ways, I understand that. But I just feel like that was the right thing to do for our players, to give them a chance to play the game out and see what they can do. So, that was the thinking on that."

Harbaugh is wrong. That mindset isn’t “debatable.” No, that mindset is “perfectly reasonable.” Harbaugh even tried to explain it to Haley afterward.

"I think he said something like, 'I don't know about that,'" Harbaugh said. "I understood, and I just said, 'Preseason, preseason for the young guys.' He said 'OK.'

You’ll remember that Haley got really upset last year and refused to shake the hand of former Broncos coach Josh McDaniels for running up the score on the Chiefs or for McDaniels’ participation in New England’s Spygate or for something. You’ll also recall that it led to this classic picture of Haley wagging his finger in McDaniel’s face.

Haley, McDaniels

Haley later apologized for letting his emotions get the best of him, and the next time the two teams met, Haley and McDaniels did shake. Haley was given a pass because there were many observers who believed he was in the right against McDaniels.

But a preseason game when it’s clear the Ravens are trying to work on their team and see how their bubble players perform on the field? A preseason game that, last time I checked, doesn’t mean anything in the standings? I mean, really?

"Their coach has to do what he has to do to get his team ready," Haley said. "I'm trying to do what we need to do to get our team ready."

And if Haley is preparing himself for a long season of being offended by opposing coaches, he’s certainly on the right track.

Todd Haley now upset with John Harbaugh

Haley shoke Harbaughs hand and they discussed it. He then said "Okay" after Harbaughs reasoning. I dont know why this has anything to do with the McDaniels, everyone was so upset about Haleys actions then but about a week later it came out that McDaniels and the Broncos were cheating. It all became a little clearer then.

This is just another story about nothing.

Haley sums it up: "Their coach has to do what he has to do to get his team ready," Haley said. "I'm trying to do what we need to do to get our team ready."

He gave himslef the reputation when he wagged his finger at McDaniels....

Totally agree, which is actually the reason I tuned into the post-game interview - I wanted to see if Haley would whine and cry like he did last year so I was surprised when he stayed out of it and just said he wanted to focus on the Chiefs.  I think he deserves a bit of credit for doing that (although who knows what he actually said to Harbaugh on the field itself).  Given his reputation I thought he did a good job of avoiding a media pitfall this time and hopefully it means he's taken a step up in maturity.

Haley needs to stop being such a whiney crybaby. It's pre-season. I was at the game, I saw Haley on the sidel;ines and he was obviously pissed off about what was happening. Pre-season is the only time a coach can evaluate his 2rd and 3rd string players to see if they make the cut or not. It's doesn't count Todd.....

Harbas left Flacco in the game well into the 3rd quarter when Haley had his starters on the bench. You have to understand that the Ravens went a young route this year and some of these players need all the game conditions that they can get.

Every coach, including Todd Haley, should fully understand the need to take advantage of every second on that clock to prepare YOUR team for the regular season. Haley should have relished the opportunity to further evaluate talent. Belichick would have called a TO on defense if he could squeeze one more red zone defensive play out of it. Especially this year, if Haley isn't preparing his team to play an entire 60 minutes of EVERY pre-season game, I wouldn't want him as my head coach.

otherwise don't just assume things and smear reputations.

Assuming- granted
Smearing- he did that to himself last year.......

He gave himslef the reputation when he wagged his finger at McDaniels....

The Broncos sucked last year, the Chiefs somehow won the West..... For the broncos that beat down on the Chiefs was the only pleasure they had all year... Man up and get even instead of crying and lecturing....

Don't know what you're basing this on

This article is totally misleading and seems to be mostly based on rumor and hearsay - if Haley said he was upset by Harbaugh's decisions where's that quote?  In fact, Haley said in his post-game interview that he's not concerned with what Harbaugh and the Ravens did at the end of game because his focus is on the Chiefs, not on Harbaugh (that quote is included).  He never once said he was upset, miffed, or in any way angered by the late TD.  Yes, he acted badly towards McDaniels last season and he had a longer post-game handshake this time, but give the guy some credit.  He apologized to McDaniels and took the high road here.  If you have any evidence that Haley actually said he was upset then you can write an article like this - otherwise don't just assume things and smear reputations.

As a fan of the Chiefs, I am not sure if I like Haley or not.  The Chiefs are moving in the right direction, but at times, the team seems lost.  This is just another case.  Remember, Haley, it is preseason and the Ravens are still way better than we are.  It is like practice and they were practicing.  He needs to get over it and get the offense moving the ball.  I fear that he is an egomaniac and he is going to run the offense.  He is the head coach and that is it.  Plus, preseason.  PRESEASON.  They are practicing in a game situation that you cannot get playing with yourself (sounds wrong).  So, Haley, get us better and worry when it matters.
