You know that self-imposed deadline of Sept. 4 for Larry Fitzgerald and the Cardinals to get a contract extension done? Well, you can forget it. A new contract, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, has been completed.

And the figure is a mind-blowing number: eight years, $120 million with $50 million guaranteed.

Before the final figures were tallied, the Cardinals front office said it had no problem making Fitzgerald one of the highest-paid players in the league -- and the best-paid player in team history -- and to see him retire as a Cardinals player. Now, it seems like there's a pretty good chance they’ve done it (Fitzgerald will turn 28 at the end of this month).

"It's interesting," Fitzgerald said. "I told Mr. (Michael) Bidwell how much I hate this part of sports. This is the game I love. I'm so passionate about it. When you talk about the business side, it makes me uncomfortable. I'm really happy to put it behind us."

Fitzgerald's Rich Deal
And though we all assumed that Fitzgerald wouldn't want to sign a long-term deal unless the Cardinals made marked improvements in free agency last offseason, Fitzgerald said that wasn't the case.

"I'm not one to try to hold a hammer over anybody's head," said Fitzgerald, who already owns most of the team's receiving records (as well as the league's playoff receiving records, accumulated during the team's Super Bowl XLIII run). "This is Mr. Bidwell's team. He's going to do everything he can to make this organization go. The activity in free agency this year is something I haven't seen since I've been here. That's a sign of things to come. We're going to continue to be aggressive making this team better. I'm confident that's going to happen."

And considering Arizona already has given QB Kevin Kolb a $63 million deal (with $20 million guaranteed), the Cardinals are a team that has to feel confident that they’ll have a high-powered pass offense for years to come.

And in case you want to see the entire news conference from Saturday night, here it is.

Cards give Fitzgerald huge extension (VIDEO)

No surprise here that the best WR Larry Fitzgerald in the NFL for the last five years and counting signed with his beloved Cardinals team. Like the experts have said that now that the Cards have gotten a good QB in Kevin Kolb for many years to come that the Cards will once again be the kings of the NFC West for many years to come and even Fitzgerald know that to. Great signing by the Cards to get Fitzgerald and know the Cards can but there minds into winning the NFC West title and go far in the playoffs this year and many years to come.

I just think that what people have to remember about this year is that with the new CBA comes a redefinition of "big money". There's no rookie salary cap, but the league did restructure the deal so that more of the money goes to veterans, so $6.25 million a year guaranteed isn't too high. Even with incentives, I don't believe for a guy like Fitzgerald that is a premier player in the league and very important to the Cardinals that even $11 million or so a year is overpaying by much if at all.

The key is 50 million guarranteed. Probably never sees the last 70 million of this deal same as evertone else in these NFL deals. He is well worth 50 million guaranteed bucks. If Kolb is nothing, they let them boith walk in 5 years and move on. As for the retard who hopes he tears an achilles, you can tell everything you need to know about him by his screen name and the moronic comment. I hope you die in a car crash ,drunk on the way home tonite, just don't take anyone else with you, but you probably will being the loser you are.

Fitzgerald will be paid a lot more then just the 50 million guaranteed dollars in his contract. The details aren't out yet but I'm willing to bet a lot of that money is front loaded.  As for the last part of your post, what's wrong with you man?  Instead of ignoring the idiot that hopes Fitzgerald gets hurt you respond by wishing DEATH on him?  Do you understand death and the consequences that go far beyond just one person dying or are you just a young guy that feels invincible in life? Have you ever lost anybody extremely young in your life to a car crash or sickness or anything else?

Don't lower yourself to the standards that idiot has ever again..... this board is supposed to be about sports.  Reading posts like that creeps me out.... it's just wrong to talk like that.

Wow, no receiver is worth that. They're not even sure they have a QB to throw to him. Blunder.

Haters like you said the same thing when Warner came to the Cardinals... a Super Bowl and two consecutive playoff appearances later you had to shut your mouth and cast down your red face in shame.  The Cards will rise again and should be a good quality team for a sustained period of time.

Kevin Kolb and Larry Fitzgerald appeared certain to combine for a lot of touchdowns this season.  And I'd love to see Larry get even more motivated by landing the career contract from the Cardinals.  But having $50M guaranteed could make it too hard to escape the customary mega-million-dollar-contract slump.  It will bear watching how this affects Fitzgerald's efforts on the field as the season begins.

I can't beleive he decided that he's okay with losing! I would of thought that for sure he would go somewhere else next year to have a chance to win. Its something he will probably never do in Arizona!

I hope to see him earn his money, I thinkt that he and kolb and get on the same page that this could be an exciting year for LF. We prolly wont see that same chem that he had with Kurt but maybe next year they can gel and make a run for it.

He will never see all of $120.  All NFL contracts are structured this way.  Just like when Eagles gave McNabb $115 mil for 10 years but in reality it was $64 mil for 7 years as the last 3 years were worth $51 mil.

Guaranteed $$ is the only thing that matters in NFL.  I am betting the "actual" value of this contract will be more along the lines of 5 years, $70 mil.  LF is the best all around receiver in the NFL.  And while no receiver should get paid this kind of $$, he is the one exception to this.
