Bears sign Brandon Meriweather to 1-year deal

Safety Brandon Meriweather may have made the Pro Bowl the past two seasons, but it wasn't enough to keep the Patriots from cutting him Saturday. He wasn't out of work long, however. New England's 2007 first-round pick signed with the Bears Sunday, the team announced.

It's a one-year contract, which suggests that the Bears aren't completely convinced Meriweather is a long-term answer in the secondary. If anything, he adds depth and experience, something Chicago lost in Thursday night's preseason finale when backups Craig Steltz and Chris Conte suffered a hip injury and a concussion, respectively.

ChicagoBears.com adds that "Meriweather becomes the sixth player on the Bears roster who was drafted in the first round by another NFL team, joining Jay Cutler (Broncos), Julius Peppers (Panthers), Roy Williams (Lions), Chris Spencer (Seahawks) and Amobi Okoye (Texans).

"The Bears do not have to make a corresponding roster move to make room for Meriweather until he officially signs his contract."

Meriweather, 27, started 40 games during his four-year stint in New England, recorded 261 tackles and 12 picks. However, his Patriots career might best be remembered for the vicious hit on Todd Heap during the 2010 season that led to a $50,000 fine and a vow to remain aggressive, "point blank."

As for what the Bears are getting, CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco wrote Saturday that "If you can't cover these days, you aren't worth having on the field." Colleague Clark Judge added, "New England isn't afraid to make the difficult decision, and it just proved it. Again. … Bottom line: Change is good."

We'll have to wait and see if that tenet holds for the Bears, too.

Bears sign Brandon Meriweather to 1-year deal

I say 80% chance this will turn out to be a better move for the bears to get him than not.  How can he make any team worse?  The Bears were in desperate mode because of injuries.  This will turn out real well for Chicago.  Now I just hope Briggs can work something out with the Bears.  Would hate to lose him.

Bears sign Brandon Meriweather to 1-year deal

Hello football fans!  This is a huge move for the Bears who have what exactly?  If this goes through then the Bears have upgraded.  If anyone thinks the Bears are stronger without him they must be watching a different team then the one I get here in Chicago.

- he's cocky with an attitude problem. What sort of impact do you think a guy like that would have on the team morale if he was riding the bench?

I'm sure its an upgrade given the poor depth and injuries for the Bears... however, buyer beware. Good news Bears fans, they only stuck their toe in the water for a one year deal so it's probably a good move for them. There certainly is some upside potential to make the Patriots look silly but it hasnt happened yet. Time and time again, the Patriots released go on to do nothing. The Patriots have no track record of releasing good talent... ever. Well, not exactly, they did let Asante Samuel go to the Eagles in free agency but that was a salary cap issue mostly. They just didnt feel he was worth the $ they'd need to spend to keep him. Ty Law same deal. Samuel has been fantastic and Law had 1 or 2 product years before hanging up his cleats for good. Willie McGuinest? a couple decent years. Other than that, everyone they've let go (via cut, free agency or trade) have done nothing and 9 times out of 10 are cut sooner or later by their new team. Randy Moss and Lawrence Maroney most recently. I could name a dozen players from the past 5 years but you know them and get the point. Bears fan, be excited that you got some help which will definitly increase depth but dont get too excited. Odds are he's cut before the end of the year,

I think with the scheme the Bears play he may have a shot at contributing for them this year big time.  If anything he should be pissed and looking to play well this year so that he gets a big pay day next year.

I think that this is a good move for the Bears for sure.  They had 2 backups get dinged up in the last pre-season game and really need to make sure they have some extra depth entering the season.  As for his coverage skills......the Bears scheme is not about covering man to man but about being in the right zone.  They want guys who can run and hit.  I am not really sure how quick he is but making the pro bowl two years in a row is not a mistake.  He did something right and the Bears are not really taking that huge of a risk with settling on a one year deal.

Besides Chris Harris, he is better than the Wright, Steltz, Conte and Venable.  It's a good move by the Bears.  Merriweather has had 12 interceptions the last 4 yrs which is 4th in the NFL during that time.  Also made the pro bowl the last 2 yrs.  Merriweather is worth the look and i don't think its much of a risk for the Bears.

Are you kidding? Studs? Merriweather is a problem. The Patriots don't dump quality players unless they have attitude problems or can't play anymore. The Bears picked up a guy that can't cover. Better play him close to the line or he'll be a liability.
