Bears sign Brandon Meriweather to 1-year deal

Safety Brandon Meriweather may have made the Pro Bowl the past two seasons, but it wasn't enough to keep the Patriots from cutting him Saturday. He wasn't out of work long, however. New England's 2007 first-round pick signed with the Bears Sunday, the team announced.

It's a one-year contract, which suggests that the Bears aren't completely convinced Meriweather is a long-term answer in the secondary. If anything, he adds depth and experience, something Chicago lost in Thursday night's preseason finale when backups Craig Steltz and Chris Conte suffered a hip injury and a concussion, respectively.

ChicagoBears.com adds that "Meriweather becomes the sixth player on the Bears roster who was drafted in the first round by another NFL team, joining Jay Cutler (Broncos), Julius Peppers (Panthers), Roy Williams (Lions), Chris Spencer (Seahawks) and Amobi Okoye (Texans).

"The Bears do not have to make a corresponding roster move to make room for Meriweather until he officially signs his contract."

Meriweather, 27, started 40 games during his four-year stint in New England, recorded 261 tackles and 12 picks. However, his Patriots career might best be remembered for the vicious hit on Todd Heap during the 2010 season that led to a $50,000 fine and a vow to remain aggressive, "point blank."

As for what the Bears are getting, CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco wrote Saturday that "If you can't cover these days, you aren't worth having on the field." Colleague Clark Judge added, "New England isn't afraid to make the difficult decision, and it just proved it. Again. … Bottom line: Change is good."

We'll have to wait and see if that tenet holds for the Bears, too.

I was anticipating more senseless Patriot bashing but the day is still young, and I'm also a bit puzzled as to why a Packer fan rather than a Jet or Steeler fan would use this as an excuse to show how little they know of the subject they are talking about. Meriweather was one of the few Patriots over the last few years who drew the ire of the hometown fans for his tendency to "blow up" receivers unnecessarily (not just Todd Heap) and because of his piss poor coverage skills. The fact that Meriweather made multiple Pro Bowls says more about how big a farce the Pro Bowl is than Meriweather's ability as an all-around safety.

He at least needed a change of scenery and a simpler scheme.

However, I'm shocked they cut him. They have NO safety depth now and are ridiculously under the cap with no top notch players left to spend that money on. I don't understand why they didn't keep him on as a backup if nothing else for the year, re-evaluate next year.

One nitpick with the article:
"However, his Patriots career might best be remembered for the vicious hit on during the 2010 season that led to a $50,000 fine and a vow to remain aggressive, "." "

I don't remember his exact quote after that fine (though I thought it was about staying within the rules while also staying aggressive, but frankly, too lazy to look it up), but let's not make him out to be James Harrison here. He DID adjust his style of play after that fine. He has passed up on "kill" shots repeatedly since then, most recently in the last preseason game. He's taking the body, but still hitting hard. Whatever he might have said, he stands as one of the best examples of what Goodell has been trying to do to hitting in the NFL.

I've heard this guy getting interviewed and he's got to be one of the dumbest players in NFL history.  Not surprising that he couldn't "get" the defensive scheme, was on the bench for many games at the start of the 2010 season, and couldn't survive the cut this preseason (during which he got fewer and fewer reps with the 1st string D until altogether being OFF the 1st string D).  Good move by the Patriots to finally ride themselves of a player that only the Pro Bowl selectors apparently liked.  They were VERY patient but that patience did not last forever.  Not only did the Patriots try and fail to get ANY draft choice for him, but this was a Scott Pioli pick (now GM of the Chiefs) and even Pioli had no interest in him.

James Sanders was always telling Merriweather who to cover, or which zone to play. Once the Pats cut Sanders, Merriweathers fate was sealed. The only reason he made the Pro Bowl is because all of his Hurricane homies voted for him. Good riddance....

Meriweather wore out his welcome with Belichick.  As a Pats fan I thought Meriweather hit hard but didn't always cover well.  I still wish he was still a Patriot because the Pats seem to be very week in the secondary.  We'll have to see how it works out for The Bears.  Still think he has a lot left in the tank and a scenery may very well do him good!

Great move by the Bears?  He was so lowly regarded that the Pats couldn't even get a low round draft pick for him. Trust me, as a Pats season ticket holder, he is a pathetically bad player. Just goes to show how clueless people who select payers for the pro bowl are.

Another reason to hate the Patriots. Have a feeling this will be regarded as a great move by the Bears in hindsight. Highly doubt this guy's career is over. Thanks a lot from a Packer fan...
