Peyton Manning's been the story of the NFL preseason thus far, thanks to a complicated neck surgery he underwent 15 weeks ago and the slow process which which he's recovered.

It became a bigger story on Monday when the Colts announced that not only has his rehab "slowed," but that Manning won't practice leading up to the Week 1 game against the Texans and will be listed as "doubtful" on the official injury report.

"During the last week, the rate of improvement in Peyton’s rehabilitation process slowed," the Colts said in a statement released by the team Monday. "Over the weekend Peyton experienced soreness in his back. It was originally thought to be a normal reaction to his rehabilitation regimen. When the soreness persisted, the Colts medical team decided to initiate diagnostic tests and to consult with a number of specialists around the country who have been involved in Peyton’s case from the outset. That process continues.

"As a result of the most recent development the doctors have decided that Peyton will not practice. His participation therefore, in Sunday’s game versus Houston will likely be doubtful. We will update his playing status as required by NFL policy as the week goes on."

The Colts also added that "the end date" of Peyton's recovery "is unpredictable" and that "it serves no useful purpose to speculate about hypothetical outcomes."

Which is precisely what I'll do right now: it doesn't look good for Peyton playing.

Colts Crazy Preseason

That seems insane, but, hey it's been a busy day for Indy, who also announced that new gameday consultant Jim Tressel would serve a non-suspension suspension for the first six games of the season.

And it's still entirely possible that Peyton does play in Week 1 against Houston. Here's the logic for why he won't: Indianapolis has 16 games they'll play this season, and while the first one against Houston is extremely important, it won't decide the fate of their 2011 season.

Additionally, the newest backup in town, Kerry Collins, has seen the Texans a time or two in his career. And while he's just 3-4 against Houston (which probably won't impress at least one of his wide receivers) he has completed 53.8 percent of his passes for 1,550 yards in seven games while throwing for six touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Those aren't Peyton Manning numbers, of course, but they're also not Curtis Painter numbers either.

Peyton 'doubtful' for Week 1, won't practice

Nothing bastardized about Favre's record, Mouse. Prove it to me! Otherwise STFU and don't waste our time with your lies.
Okay, so it wasn't exactly as I recalled. However the week before the Cowboys game (11/29/2007) most people were saying that he shouldn't play unless it was to keep his streak going. Of course his main concern was his streak, not the team. He went 5 for 14, threw 2 int's, and had a qb rating of 8.9. That should have been Rodger's start. I heard that he was hurt before that game because the Punter caught him trying to steal his Vicodin and roughed him up a little.
Also, he is a bastardizer of records. How can you even argue the Strahan-Gastineau thing. The guy laid down.

Peyton 'doubtful' for Week 1, won't practice

I'm not a Peyton Manning fan, but I don't want to see him risk his life for the game and with a neck injury, that's exactly what he could be doing.  I know that's a possibility on any play, even from the the healthiest of athletes, but the likelihood of a disastrous hit is greatly increased by his injury.

Peyton 'doubtful' for Week 1, won't practice

Is this going to be another "is he or isn't he" Bret Favre drama?

Peyton 'doubtful' for Week 1, won't practice

There is little doubt in my mind that Manning is chomping at the bit to get back on the field but the Colts are making the best long term choice.  They need to let his body finish the healing process properly and not rush him back.  Yes, the Colts are likely in for a very turbulent first few weeks of the season but I think Collins can at least keep them at .500.  He's going to make mistakes, no doubt, but he's definitely an upgrade over Painter.  As for Manning and his streak I heard a brief blurb from him on Sirius-XM Radio this morning where he pretty much put that to rest.  He basically said (and I'm not quoting, just paraphrasing) that the streak isn't his biggest concern.

This makes me wonder whether the Colts are going to look real hard at drafting a QB in the forthcoming draft.  It would seem like a wise decision to start grooming the next guy in line.  I've heard that Manning is so meticulous about practice that he doesn't take a rep off so it's been hard to groom Painter but I think Coach Caldwell and GM Bill Pollian need to insist that Manning allow them to start grooming someone.  I don't think Manning could refuse, then again, I could be wrong.

Peyton 'doubtful' for Week 1, won't practice

Would it be selfish to Let Peyton start, and play one play, just to extend his consecutive start streak. They could run a running play,on the opening play.LOL I hope Peyton has a speedy recovery, and gets back to 100%.

Peyton 'doubtful' for Week 1, won't practice

I have Payton in one league and Cassel for a backup. Think I might try to obtain another QB before the weekend.

Peyton 'doubtful' for Week 1, won't practice

First of all Manning has to be 100% sure he is ready to play before stepping onto the field week 1 which doesn't look like he is.  He knew he was not ready to play week 1.  He will play about week 4 or so.  The Colts would have never taken off the PUP list if he was going to be out  for a long time.  The fact that he is compensating for his neck injury has caused back pain.  I know how competitive Payton is but this is something that he has to let heel completely before practicing.  If he doesn't he will have a major setback and he will be on the PUP list.  I drafted Manning in both my leagues.  Got him in the 4th in one and the 5th in the other.  I think Manning will still be a major factor even if he misses 3 or 4 games as long as it is no more than that.Cool
