Peyton Manning's been the story of the NFL preseason thus far, thanks to a complicated neck surgery he underwent 15 weeks ago and the slow process which which he's recovered.

It became a bigger story on Monday when the Colts announced that not only has his rehab "slowed," but that Manning won't practice leading up to the Week 1 game against the Texans and will be listed as "doubtful" on the official injury report.

"During the last week, the rate of improvement in Peyton’s rehabilitation process slowed," the Colts said in a statement released by the team Monday. "Over the weekend Peyton experienced soreness in his back. It was originally thought to be a normal reaction to his rehabilitation regimen. When the soreness persisted, the Colts medical team decided to initiate diagnostic tests and to consult with a number of specialists around the country who have been involved in Peyton’s case from the outset. That process continues.

"As a result of the most recent development the doctors have decided that Peyton will not practice. His participation therefore, in Sunday’s game versus Houston will likely be doubtful. We will update his playing status as required by NFL policy as the week goes on."

The Colts also added that "the end date" of Peyton's recovery "is unpredictable" and that "it serves no useful purpose to speculate about hypothetical outcomes."

Which is precisely what I'll do right now: it doesn't look good for Peyton playing.

Colts Crazy Preseason

That seems insane, but, hey it's been a busy day for Indy, who also announced that new gameday consultant Jim Tressel would serve a non-suspension suspension for the first six games of the season.

And it's still entirely possible that Peyton does play in Week 1 against Houston. Here's the logic for why he won't: Indianapolis has 16 games they'll play this season, and while the first one against Houston is extremely important, it won't decide the fate of their 2011 season.

Additionally, the newest backup in town, Kerry Collins, has seen the Texans a time or two in his career. And while he's just 3-4 against Houston (which probably won't impress at least one of his wide receivers) he has completed 53.8 percent of his passes for 1,550 yards in seven games while throwing for six touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Those aren't Peyton Manning numbers, of course, but they're also not Curtis Painter numbers either.

So because someone has a middlestern name you call them a terrorist

I never called him a terrorist. He called me a nimrod for no reason. My feelings were hurt.

One thing I've learned about Manning...He may not in fact play..but one things for sure, the NFL teams are real good about giving miss information just to keep the other teams guessing. i think this is not different. Stay tuned  friends...will he or won't he? make the call

Peyton 'doubtful' for Week 1, won't practice

As a true football fan, I hope he sits out the first week or two.  You are one of the 5 or 10 people in this league, that everyone wants to watch.  Not just Colt fans.  Don't risk injury that could effect your career, and more importantly your life.  We all want to be the man, but sometimes you have to listen to reason.  You will have 14 or 15 good weeks to work your magic.

It is way easier for some to just throw out opinions and dress them up as fact. Favre made plenty of mistakes, but he and Peyton Manning have both been durable tough NFL QBs. There is indeed nothing soft about Favres consecutive start record. I am sure the Colts will be willing to allow Peyton two weeks to sit to play at close to 100%.

Nothing bastardized about Favre's record, Mouse. Prove it to me! Otherwise STFU and don't waste our time with your lies.

Peyton 'doubtful' for Week 1, won't practice sir are a liar. IF you actually looked at the individual game stats, you would've seen that the fewest pass attempts he ever had during the streak was 10. There were a few other games where he had less than 20. Those were games he started and got hurt in, or the Pack built such a big lead they took him out. I suggest next time, you either review the facts before you post, or refrain from lying. It just makes you look like a total fool.

Just in case you doubt me liar, here is my proof from pro-football reference:
2010, only 19 attempts in a 24-21 win over Dallas
2009: no games less than 20 attempts
2008: 19 attempts in a 47-3 win over the Rams
2007: 14 attempts in a 27-37 loss to Dallas (injured during game) and in Week 17 11 attempts in a 34-13 win over the Lions (143 qb rating that game and he threw for 2 TD's (Last regular season game as a Packer)
2006: 15 attempts in a 0-35 loss to New England
2005: no games less than 20 attempts
2004: 18 attempts in a 7-14 loss to the Giants and 13 attempts in a week 17 31-14 victory over the bears
2003: 15 attempts in a 20-10 victory over the niners
2002: 11 for 14 in a 30-9 victory over the 'skins
1998-2001: no games less than 20 attempts1997: 12 for 18 in a 31-21 win over Buffalo
1995-1996: no games less than 20 attempts
1994: 10 attempts in a 10-13 loss to the vikes (believe he sprained ankle in the game); the following week 6-15, 1 td no int in a 33-6 win over the bears
1993: no games less than 20 attempts
1992: 14 attempts in week 2 (the game before the streak started); 14-19-210-2  in week four 17-3 win over the Steelers and 15-19-214-3 in a 38-10 victory over the Lions.

Nothing soft about the streak.

Peyton 'doubtful' for Week 1, won't practice

having Peyton nearly healthy for the season is too important for game or a record is nothing compare to the chance to be a contender(without Manning..Colts become a average team..ask to Clark and Wayne please..)..another issue is the OL..they are not settled and strong as in the past(lost also Mudd...)so i think they worry Manning could receive more the recent years the OL was outstanding if we think also how many pass-plays they called!(and Manning is not the most mobile Qb in league)...Please give also some credit to OL for the success of the team..
