CB Darius Butler cut by Patriots

In 2009, the Patriots had a whopping four second-round draft picks. On Tuesday, they cut one of those picks, cornerback Darius Butler.

Butler, the 41st-overall pick that year, announced the move on Twitter.

"Its been real New England," Butler tweeted Tuesday. "I was blessed to have a chance to play and start my NFL career here. But its time to open a new chapter. Thx #patsnation."

Per our Patriots Rapid Reporter Greg Bedard, Butler wasn't exactly shocked about the news.

"It wasn't a surprise. I was hearing trade speculation," Butler said. "It happened maybe a little bit later than I wanted, but I'm ready to go forward."

Butler, who played in 15 games last season, recorded just 23 tackles and zero sacks. Butler figured to see some substantial playing time last year when Leigh Bodden went on injured reserve, but he never stepped up his play and eventually lost his starting spot.

With Bodden, blossoming star Devin McCourty and Kyle Arrington topping the depth chart, the Patriots clearly felt they have enough manpower.

Don't expect to see the youngster stay on the open market long, though. As Steve Reed of the Gaston Gazette points out, the Panthers have the first chance at claiming Butler off of waivers and given that their in pretty desperate need of cornerbacks, it would be shocking to see them pass on him.

Interestingly enough (or maybe not?), in the 2009 NFL Draft, Butler went two picks ahead of former Panthers defensive end Everette Brown, who Carolina cut Sunday. Butler won't get them their first-round pick back from the 49ers, but he might salvage something out of what turned out to be an absolutely disastrous draft in 2009.

The Eagles signed both Samuels & Hobbs away from the Pats.  Did they win the Superbowl? I guess they were not the answer

he failed to sign a then 26 year old Asante Samual, who owned Payton Manning

you mean the same Asante Samual that did not make the game ending interception that would have completed the 1st perfect season since the 72 phins?  an easy interection that ty law would have made?  the conner that "owned Payton Manning" was Law not Samual.  Samual thought that he was worth more that BB did.  In the salary cap world you can't keep everone.  the Pats have been good every year this century BB must be doing something right.

its not so much the 1st round pick, its because he's failed on rounds 2,3,4, last year he could have taken Dez Bryant at 25 and then traded up to get Mccorty  in the early 2nd round,

lets look at rounds 2, 3, & 4 of last years draft (2010):

2 - Rob Gronkowski (starting TE)
2 - Jermaine Cunningham (contributing OL)
2 - brandon spikes (starting LB)
3 - Taylor Price (has potential @ WR)
4 - Aaron Hernaadex (could start for 3/4 of NFL teams at TE)
5 - Zoltan Meski (starting P)

Everyone but Price was a contributing factor to the Pats 14-2 record.

Paz, its not so much the 1st round pick, its because he's failed on rounds 2,3,4, last year he could have taken Dez Bryant at 25 and then traded up to get Mccorty  in the early 2nd round, and a couple of years ago he failed to sign a then 26 year old Asante Samual, who owned Payton Manning, let him walk, Bill Belichick has let Tom Brady Down by not fixing a weak Defense the Last couple of years! how would Mayo look inthe middle next to Clay Mathews?

there are a lot of 1st round picks that don't make it accross the leage.  I heard on the radio that based on stats, a 1st round pick has a 50-50 chance of making it in the NFL.  It drops to 20 or 30% for a 2nd round and goes down from there.

jngkat,  where have I knocked the steelers.  If fact I said because the steelers are a good team they don't keep as many draft picks as say the Panthers.

What you fail to understand, because of the salary cap, there are only so many 1st round picks that you can sign.  By trading their 1st for next years 1st of another team, the Pats insure that they draft higher than they should.  Its pretty smart actually.  Don't forget, because of Spy gate they actually lost a 1st round pick.

Um....going 16 in the regular season and then making it to the Superbowl in 07.  Pretty relevant.

You Steeler fans are the most idiotic.  All you do is complain about the Pats.  You're team is supposed to be big tough and bad asses....yet they whine and cry about the League and the Pats.

Paz, I am a Patriots fan, but do not knock the Steelers, they are a good organization, every year they lose quaiity players, and are right there at the end! My point is that Bill Belicheck some times out thinks himself, yes he had a good draft in 2010, but for a couple of years he missed, 06,07,08 he does not need to trade down for value all the time,  he missed on Clay Mathews, when he could have selected Chung and Butler later on!

Typical steeler fan, you missed the point entirely.  My point was it is harder to make a team that is good year in and year out than a bad team.  I am sure the Panthers keep more of their draft picks than the Steelers do.

Ment to say AFC East.  Got to slow down on the typing and proof before posting.
