CB Darius Butler cut by Patriots

In 2009, the Patriots had a whopping four second-round draft picks. On Tuesday, they cut one of those picks, cornerback Darius Butler.

Butler, the 41st-overall pick that year, announced the move on Twitter.

"Its been real New England," Butler tweeted Tuesday. "I was blessed to have a chance to play and start my NFL career here. But its time to open a new chapter. Thx #patsnation."

Per our Patriots Rapid Reporter Greg Bedard, Butler wasn't exactly shocked about the news.

"It wasn't a surprise. I was hearing trade speculation," Butler said. "It happened maybe a little bit later than I wanted, but I'm ready to go forward."

Butler, who played in 15 games last season, recorded just 23 tackles and zero sacks. Butler figured to see some substantial playing time last year when Leigh Bodden went on injured reserve, but he never stepped up his play and eventually lost his starting spot.

With Bodden, blossoming star Devin McCourty and Kyle Arrington topping the depth chart, the Patriots clearly felt they have enough manpower.

Don't expect to see the youngster stay on the open market long, though. As Steve Reed of the Gaston Gazette points out, the Panthers have the first chance at claiming Butler off of waivers and given that their in pretty desperate need of cornerbacks, it would be shocking to see them pass on him.

Interestingly enough (or maybe not?), in the 2009 NFL Draft, Butler went two picks ahead of former Panthers defensive end Everette Brown, who Carolina cut Sunday. Butler won't get them their first-round pick back from the 49ers, but he might salvage something out of what turned out to be an absolutely disastrous draft in 2009.

-hmmm i dont remember ARMPITsburgh being in 8 of the last 10 super bowls.  Nobody cares about being relavent in the playoffs , only thing that matters is the SB.  But you can go on spewing info about how being relevant in the playpffs and being happy about it, the Patriots only care about winning superbowls and doing it with a QB that ahs morals and a defense that dont have a steelroidedcurtain.

"AFC Champs 8 out of the last 10 years"---hmmm i dont remember them being in 8 of the last 10 super bowls.  I cant remember them even being relavent in the playoffs since 2004 or 2005.  But who cares about details when spewing info about how great the Patriots are.

14-2 ; AFC Champs 8 of last 10yrs (only two times they were not they were tied and lost on the tie breaker rules - one of those times they were 11-5).  Maybe just maybe the draft picks don't stay with the team because the pats are very good and have good players.  They cut Sanders, he went to the Falcons, Merriweather went to the Bears, and Butler to the Panthers.  If they were busts, why did they immediately find work with other teams?  It is harder to make and stay with a good team than a bad team.  BB is always looking to 1) upgrade & 2) find the new guy with more potential.  Oh, and what about Thomas, he won a Superbowl with the Saints after he was unwanted with the Pats.  Almost forgot Castle.  There are so many players cut by NE (in non-salarie cap cuts) playing for other teams.

A fool? Really? Do fools win 3 super bowls?  Will fools be entered into the Hall of Fame?
Or are people who judge coaches on draft picks, instead of wins and losses fools?

Funny to read all these comments from people that could not coach a little league team, yet they knock Bill. Get serious quit trying to build your ego. Do you realy think that if the players that are being let go were realy good and should stay where they are? Get real. Every year the Patriots are ranked at the top of the league due to his brilliance.  No one said he made  a great choice drafting Brady in the late rounds. He will admit WE GOT LUCKY having Tom win the Superbowls !!! We all know it was mostly defense that won them. Some great hindsite comments as to drafts and players who did not make it.   Your so smart you should present your credentials to Mr Kraft. I'm sure he will dump Bill and make you the Patriots head coach. Some people win a fantacy championship and think they are ready for the big leagues. Bye Darius, your someone other teams problem now. Thanks for the effort.

really should get his facts straight, Parcells drafted Bledsoe not BB.  Before he was injured, Bledsoe couldn't win. BB wanted out of Parcells shadow and was given the leeway to do so.  BB drafted Brady and has not looked back since. GO Pats.

I am getting tired of hearing how big of a GENIUS a coach is when it's an injury that led to Brady playing a snap in the NFL.
  1. He was drafted and placed 5th on the depth chart, was predicted to be a practice squad player
  2. Was 4th on the depth chart after an injury going into training camp, patriots decided to go with 4 QBs.
  3. Friez and Bishop had horrible permormences (rated #2 and #3 at the time ahead of Brady)
  4. Following season Bledsoe was still the starter and if not for an injury might still be the Patriots QB and none of us are even talking about Brady.
When a player gets injured (the original player the COACH thought would help the team win) how in the world can he be considered a GENIUS coach, when in reality he thought Bledsoe was better than Brady. In my opinion that is LUCK more than SKILL when it comes to judging talent.

All these terrible drafts by the patriots... i guess if you can't give your players video recordings of other teams they just can't figure out how to play and cheat effectively.
