David Garrard was stunningly released on Tuesday afternoon by the Jaguars, and, this might not come as "news," but he was as surprised as everyone else.

According to his agent, Al Irby, he was "shocked" even, because they believed Garrard was starting Week 1 for Jacksonville.

"Been assured that the job was his this year," said Al Irby, Garrard's agent, said, per Tania Ganguli of The Florida Times-Union. "That's why we're all shocked, and so was he. This had to be a last minute decision, that's the only thing I can say. I don't think these guys would purposely tell me one thing and [do another]."

Perhaps the most logical reason for waiting so long to release Garrard? The Colts situation at quarterback -- though it stinks to wait so long for Garrard to get on the open market for his own personal reasons, he might have been a nice fit for the Jags division rival Indy.

The 2011 Jaguars
But given that the NFL is a quarterbacks league that doesn't feature all that many good quarterbacks, it stands to reason he'll find work somewhere. Which is why it makes sense that, also according to Irby, he's "gotten some calls."

"The system's going to do what it's going to do," Irby said. "He has gotten some calls, they know there's some interest. David can still play it's obvious. He knows he's gonna have options and he's gonna just sit back and let the offers come in and make a decision."

There are still plenty of teams that need quarterback. The 49ers brought in Josh McCown due to their concern with Alex Smith as a starter, and wouldn't that be a potentially ironic landing spot given that Luke McCown took over as the starter for Garrard?

The Panthers are rolling with Derek Anderson as their backup, and the Carolina quarterbacks coach Mike Shula had some serious success with Garrard when he coached in Jacksonville from 2007-10. Seattle's quarterbacks coach, Carl Smith, was Garrard's offensive coordinator in Jacksonville for two years, from 2005-06.

The Ravens (Tyrod Taylor) and Raiders (Kyle Boller) could both use a capable backup. Tennessee might be interested at the right price to help protect the need to shove Jake Locker into a starting role if Matt Hasselbeck gets hurt.

So it's not surprising to hear that teams are inquiring about Garrard's availability. The only question is whether it's too close to the start of the season for another team to really make the investment in Garrard worth the cost.

David Garrard's agent: QB has 'gotten some calls'

I watch David Garrard twice a year. He is a tremendous player who oftwn makes better decisions then bad ones on and off the field. He has helped the Jaguars compete every year as a starter. I think you need to look at the coaching staff there. Linebackers are not great coaches. And lets not forgwt the old mighty dollar. Heard a report that the owners used his apperance at an event to sell tickets then cut him to save 9 million dollars. Hope someone scoops him up, I know I would rather have him backing up my quaterback, especially since he's been ruled out for week 1...Damn you Manning! You get your surgery done in Feb-Mar. not in May!!!

David Garrard's agent: QB has 'gotten some calls'

There's something fishy about this whole thing, but I'm not in Jacksonville's lockerroom.  I honestly think the Jaquars are going to be dead last in their division this season, throwing the season away.  Releasing Garrard in the offseason or after this season would've made alot more since for everybody involved.  You can't blame Garrard because the offensive line didn't block for him.  I witnessed this guy make all kinds of plays with very little to work with.  His 250lb scrambles alone saved the Jaguars alot of times.  The Jaquars have officially put themselves even further behind the Texans, Colts, and the Titans.  Look for the 'franchise move' talks to resume after this season...

This would be the perfect for the Colts.  If you can get him for a three year deal and he is willing o back-up.  He would fit nicely into their system .

David Garrard's agent: QB has 'gotten some calls'

McCown may not give the team a better shot at winning than Garrard, but he gives them just as much. Garrard was awful this preseason and last year, when MJD went down and was given a chance to put the team on his shoulders, he couldn't get the job done. Also, word around the locker room is that confindence was lost in Garrard. This preseason, every time Garrard went back to throw, he got killed. When McCown comes in, he has all the time in the world to get the ball out. What does that tell you? Garrard started blaming everyone else but himself. He lost that locker room.

And for those thinking this move is a "throw away the season" thing, you're crazy. That's never the thinking in this league. if that was the case, they would've named Gabbert the starter.

David Garrard's agent: QB has 'gotten some calls'

When the Steelers lost Leftwich I thought they should seek a backup instead of using the retread Batch and the inconsistent Dixon.  I have changed my doubt Garrard is the best available QB but Pittsburgh is not the right place for him, nor is he right for the Steelers.  If he was beaten out by Luke McCown what does this say about David?  Not so much, Batch has answered the bell successfully in the past and I would not drop Dixon for Garrard...Dixon is young can run and needs a chance to prove he belongs...although time is running out on the QB/Slash from Oregon.

What about Chicago? As a Packer fan, I love knowing that Jay Cutler is under center for the Bears because he brings inconsistent play and is far from being a Leader on the team. Perhaps if the Bears brought in somebody that could push Cutler through competition, it will make Cutler better while also providing a dependable backup with experience.

Ironically, I think he goes to Pitt as a backup to replace Leftwich, who went on IR.

David Garrard's agent: QB has 'gotten some calls'

If I was a free agent I would never sign with this team. Talk about screwing over a starter. No loyalty. At least give the man a chance to sign somewhere else instead of screwing him like this. It is these kind of dick moves that hurt teams like the Jags and Bengals down the road.
