David Garrard was stunningly released on Tuesday afternoon by the Jaguars, and, this might not come as "news," but he was as surprised as everyone else.

According to his agent, Al Irby, he was "shocked" even, because they believed Garrard was starting Week 1 for Jacksonville.

"Been assured that the job was his this year," said Al Irby, Garrard's agent, said, per Tania Ganguli of The Florida Times-Union. "That's why we're all shocked, and so was he. This had to be a last minute decision, that's the only thing I can say. I don't think these guys would purposely tell me one thing and [do another]."

Perhaps the most logical reason for waiting so long to release Garrard? The Colts situation at quarterback -- though it stinks to wait so long for Garrard to get on the open market for his own personal reasons, he might have been a nice fit for the Jags division rival Indy.

The 2011 Jaguars
But given that the NFL is a quarterbacks league that doesn't feature all that many good quarterbacks, it stands to reason he'll find work somewhere. Which is why it makes sense that, also according to Irby, he's "gotten some calls."

"The system's going to do what it's going to do," Irby said. "He has gotten some calls, they know there's some interest. David can still play it's obvious. He knows he's gonna have options and he's gonna just sit back and let the offers come in and make a decision."

There are still plenty of teams that need quarterback. The 49ers brought in Josh McCown due to their concern with Alex Smith as a starter, and wouldn't that be a potentially ironic landing spot given that Luke McCown took over as the starter for Garrard?

The Panthers are rolling with Derek Anderson as their backup, and the Carolina quarterbacks coach Mike Shula had some serious success with Garrard when he coached in Jacksonville from 2007-10. Seattle's quarterbacks coach, Carl Smith, was Garrard's offensive coordinator in Jacksonville for two years, from 2005-06.

The Ravens (Tyrod Taylor) and Raiders (Kyle Boller) could both use a capable backup. Tennessee might be interested at the right price to help protect the need to shove Jake Locker into a starting role if Matt Hasselbeck gets hurt.

So it's not surprising to hear that teams are inquiring about Garrard's availability. The only question is whether it's too close to the start of the season for another team to really make the investment in Garrard worth the cost.

David Garrard's agent: QB has 'gotten some calls'

Both the Raiders and Redskins are currently carrying only two Qb's on their rosters. Given Garrard's stats over the last 5 years, he would (could) acually compete for the starting spot on either team. Both Al Davis and Dan Snyder (or Al Jr, as I "fondly" call him) will grow impatent in a few weeks (and a few losses) and will blame the usual spot... QB. Garrard won't help either team win and not because he is incapable, but rather becuase he will have no time in the pocket. Can anyone say "fix the OL before blaming the QB."

Youngnsons, the term quality is subjective, and this is no surprise to the team or it's fans. The very same happened when Garrard got the starting spot. But the focus of this blog is that it was done layer so Indy wouldn't pick him up? Absurd. They require a thinking QB capable of reading defenses presnap. Garrard has never been better than a one read tuck and run QB. The Steelers could use him, complex passing offenses not so much.

David Garrard's agent: QB has 'gotten some calls'

Everybody seems surprised by this move, the Jags did the same thing to Leftwich almost 4 years ago to the day. Garrard was the beneficiary at that time. That move, I didn't care for and as a Jag fan...this one I agree with. The timing is, again, poor but the best David would have carried us to is MAYBE 8-8. Get Gabbert ready for '12.

The Jags are stupid.  Some people saying Garrard didn't do enough with the Jags and thats why he was cut. The Jags defense is awful. The Jags WRs are nothing. The only thing Garrard had was a good Running back. Even though the Jags WRs and defense are weak, at least with Garrard they had a shot to win. With Luke McClown the Jags will barely win 4 games. So far this is one of the top 5 worst moves this year.  Jags fans should be mad. I know i would be , if i was a Jags fan. Its like the Jags already gave up on the season. Having McKnown as starting QB, you have gave up already. Garrard will get signed soon. The 49ers,Redskins,Seahawks, or Raiders could use him as a Starting QB. If the Jags were smart they could of traded or cut him as soon as the strike was over. The Jags could of spent that 9 million on players they need. Maybe even try to get Kolb or Orton. Or picked up players for their weak defense.

David Garrard's agent: QB has 'gotten some calls'

Umm.... They did for 3 years... great logic
Ummm. Last year David received $8 mil. The year berfore it was $5.5 mil, the year before that is was under $3 mil.... His signing bonus and guaranteed money has been paid.....

If Garrard is not your long tuerm solution, then so be it. But your point of not doing this sooner and calling it an outrage is fair. Jacksonville has done some strange moves and this is another. No wonder they haven't had a winning record since 2007.

"I knew the JACKSONVILLE Jaguars weren't gonna pay a qb like Garrarb 8.3M."

Umm.... They did for 3 years... great logic

No one was shocked that they decided to drop him and save 8.3mil, everyone was shocked that they did it a week before the start of the season.

What an awful message to send to your players and fans, dump a proven quality starting QB for a tandem of an unproven rookie and a career back-up. If they had started this off season with just McCown and Gabbert there would have been outrage and disparity amongst everyone involved with the franchise. The only logical explanation in my eyes is that they were shopping him around and hoping to get some kind of return on investment and when no team bit they had to cut bait. Garrard will sign and play somewhere this year, and hopefully he gets a shot to beat his former team. Meanwhile the Jags just threw any chance that they had of winning the division in the garbage to save 8.3mil. SAD SAD SAD

I honestly dont get all this "shocked" and "surprised" talk. I called this move a mile away. I knew the JACKSONVILLE Jaguars weren't gonna pay a qb like Garrarb 8.3M. Wasn't gonna happen. Logically speaking who can be "shocked" by that????? I dont get it.

The 49ers desire a QB who is quick on his feet, accurate and can read defenses well. Garrard can do none of those well. Plus QB gurus prefer to mold some young guy. Garrard is 33. Josh McCown is 32. You can do the math. Unless Garrard can somehow adapt his stlye of play to that of Rich Gannon there is no way Garrard can flourish in the 49ers offense....no way!
