Owens: DeSean should 'absolutely not' play Sunday

Once upon a time, Terrell Owens -- unemployed potential Hall of Famer -- was a wide receiver for the Eagles who wanted a new contract. If the latter part of that sounds familiar, it should, because it's basically DeSean Jackson these days, even down to the fact that both men are repped by Drew Rosenhaus.

The difference is that Jackson, despite a brief holdout, has been less vocal than Owens in wanting a deal (which may be why the Eagles recently said it was doable). But that's not going to stop Owens from giving him some advice and telling him not to show up for work.

"Absolutely not," Owens told 97.5 The Fanatic on Tuesday when asked if he'd take the field Week 1 if he were Jackson. "I would have to better myself and my family and my situation. That’s ridiculous."

If there's one thing we know about Owens, it's that he's unafraid to speak his mind. If there's another thing we know, it's that he's willing to make a stink about a contract.

But if there's one thing Drew Rosenhaus knows about the Eagles, it's that they don't care how smelly you get over a new deal.

And Owens knows that and pointed out that Jackson was probably told "to go in there, be a man about it and play under the existing contract that he has." Which, clearly, Jackson has been told to do. Otherwise he wouldn't be there.

"But I guarantee you — if he goes out and gets hurt, God forbid, he’s not going to get the contract that he probably would have gotten if he held out," Owens added.

This is also true. If Jackson is seriously injured and doesn't have a big season, he will not make as much money as he would have if he made the Pro Bowl as a returner and a receiver. Again.

No one disputes this, so it's surprising that Owens thinks he's breaking ground with such an opinion -- injuries are not good for contract negotiations. They never have been, and they never will be.

And while Jackson might be putting himself at risk, the real advice he should glean from Owens comes from simply seeing what happened when the last big-time receiver in Philadelphia refused to play without more money.

Take care of his family--RIGHT!  I'm sick of these millionaire athletes who sign contracts and then bogue out on them because they want more.  The average person can't even afford a game because of the ridiculous salaries these spoiled athletes receive.  The contract looked prettty good when he signed--and agreed to the terms of the contract.  If he'd blown out a knee the owner would be out that money--and he sure as hell wouldn't be "negotiating" a new contract.  T.O. is one of the biggest airheads to ever play the game.  Getting advice from him is like Red Riding Hood asking the wolf what she should do.

DE-VALUE???
Other teams wouldn't even BLINK to grab this guy!
I do agree with you about contracts longer than a year.
Every player should have a new contract every year based on the previous season's performance.
Injuries are a part of the game, and unfortunately will lead many players to hold back regardless of their contract.

Good idea, hold out, the team does just fine without him. And he proves the point that he`s only great... In his own mind. And owens mind, of course.

Thats a good point... If he holds out and the team wins big without him, he has just effectively somewhat de-valued himself..  That being said I don't know why they even bother with contracts longer than one year any more. It doesn't seem that either side is really bound to honor them anymore..

I don't care what he has done in the past!  He sigend the deal now be a man and own up to it and stop whining about taking care of your family and situation.  Stop carrying your tag-a-long friends around and you'll have plenty of money.  God forbid if he goes out and gets hurt under the current deal?  What about the owner who gives him the huge deal and he goes out and gets hurt.  There's 40 million in guaranteed money up in smoke.  D Jax aint the great anyway!

As soon as DeSean takes T.O.'s advice, he'll be begging Philly for a job. Go away, TO... you're boring, your show is boring and you're not a star. Go do some sit-ups in a Jiffy Lube parking lot for endorsement money. You'll never be relevant again... you had your time, now shut up.

Being a life-long Redskin fan:  I'm happy another team is having the "big contract" issues for a change..  The Eagles have loaded their roster and may not win a thing... Just like the Dan Snyder Skins...  Go NFC EAST...

Tough situation with Dsean - Maybe he should settle for a raise that holds him over for a year and doesn't cause issues in the locker room.. (better than nothing and good for the team future)..

Owens is right: Don't Play DeSean!

Like many of the previous posters have mentioned, DeSean has outplayed his contract 10 times over. No question. And to all of you who think he's easily replaceable, think back to all those highlight reels you've seen of him. Many of those incredible plays won games. He is entertaining and draws a lot of fans to the stadium. He's a Pro Bowler. For 3 years hes averaged over 1000 yards on less than 60 receptions a year. His jersey sells well. He's a good team mate. He's not a criminal.
DeSean Jackson is a top shelf NFL player who's being payed like a special teams guy.
Do you really think the Eagles ownership would honor his contract if he got seriously injured in year 1 of a 5 year deal? Not a chance. Well then, what's the difference? DeSean should play at half speed if at all.

Is he still under contract? If so. STFU and HONOR your contract. I can't stand these players that think they have the right to sit out IF they don't get more money.

Yes, he is the best WR on the egals. Yes, he had a good year last season. If he doesn't have a good season last season. Can the egals ask for some money back?

No. They can't.

Man up, Plow some, and fucking play.

Hell Mr Polian isn't the owner of the eagle's, other than that Jackson would have his contract. The injury thing does suck and the eagle's are just dead wrong, They sound so much like the bear's owner's, (CHEAP).

Excuse me! UH, never say never Mr Brinson. Did you know Payton Manning just signed a BIG mega contract with Indy....again...and he is injured. This shows me that you along with many other dipstick writers do not know squat.
