Owens: DeSean should 'absolutely not' play Sunday

Once upon a time, Terrell Owens -- unemployed potential Hall of Famer -- was a wide receiver for the Eagles who wanted a new contract. If the latter part of that sounds familiar, it should, because it's basically DeSean Jackson these days, even down to the fact that both men are repped by Drew Rosenhaus.

The difference is that Jackson, despite a brief holdout, has been less vocal than Owens in wanting a deal (which may be why the Eagles recently said it was doable). But that's not going to stop Owens from giving him some advice and telling him not to show up for work.

"Absolutely not," Owens told 97.5 The Fanatic on Tuesday when asked if he'd take the field Week 1 if he were Jackson. "I would have to better myself and my family and my situation. That’s ridiculous."

If there's one thing we know about Owens, it's that he's unafraid to speak his mind. If there's another thing we know, it's that he's willing to make a stink about a contract.

But if there's one thing Drew Rosenhaus knows about the Eagles, it's that they don't care how smelly you get over a new deal.

And Owens knows that and pointed out that Jackson was probably told "to go in there, be a man about it and play under the existing contract that he has." Which, clearly, Jackson has been told to do. Otherwise he wouldn't be there.

"But I guarantee you — if he goes out and gets hurt, God forbid, he’s not going to get the contract that he probably would have gotten if he held out," Owens added.

This is also true. If Jackson is seriously injured and doesn't have a big season, he will not make as much money as he would have if he made the Pro Bowl as a returner and a receiver. Again.

No one disputes this, so it's surprising that Owens thinks he's breaking ground with such an opinion -- injuries are not good for contract negotiations. They never have been, and they never will be.

And while Jackson might be putting himself at risk, the real advice he should glean from Owens comes from simply seeing what happened when the last big-time receiver in Philadelphia refused to play without more money.

Yeah, the last big-time receiver that was in Philly prior to Jackson was T.O and they only made it to the Super Bowl while McNabb set career records along the way.  Maybe it would've been a repeat SB visit if they only would've paid TO.  The Eagles are crazy if they think that Vick can do it with Mac, McCoy, and....Riley Cooper.  Money is the absolute root of all evil.

Owens: DeSean should 'absolutely not' play Sunday

1st. Owens keeps bouncing from team to team because he's in his upper 30's ..Jerry Rice did the same thing. (a little less but a different environment then for a savy vet)
2nd. Jackson has done more than enough to prove his worth every single year he has ever played...he deserves it right now...he's proven himself just as much as Asomuah and he walked right in and got paid in full....I agree with every word TO says...he's right.

Let your actions (plays) on the field do the talking, you will get rewarded sooner or later. There's a reason why T.O. keeps bouncing from one team to another because more and more teams view him as a distraction. He did great last season for Cincy but yet they still let him go. Go out and play your best and at the end of the season, you can ask a lot more money for next season than you would be getting now plus you have the upper hand of who you want your employer to be and at a price that will make you happy.

T.O is telling the truth. Plus he isnt playing now because of a knee injury...How many of you will work for less than minimum wage or less that Your professional Salary? If he plays and gets hurt He gets nothing..hes playing for 500k now and thats nothing 250 after taxes and less when you count all the extras that he has to pay for, agents trainers etc.

Bottom line is that DeSean Jackson will get paid, this year or next, but he'll get paid.  If he starts taking advice from Terrell Owens (notice I didn't refer to him at TO), then he will quickly become garbage.  If he sticks to making big plays and stays away from hall of fame idiots he'll be fine.

Me: DeSean should 'absolutely insure himself'

jackson doesn't have to hold out in order to protect himself. he can take out an insurance policy against major injury. athletes and stars do this kind of thing all the time. desean can insure himself at the price tag of top ten wide receiver contracts. then, if an injury occurs, the man gets paid. i'm sure the policy will cost him a chunk of change, but it would be well worth it. if he remains healthy, the pay day he's going to get will more than make up for it.

on the flip side, i wouldn't want a long-term deal with the eagles after they treated me like that. they've spent money this offseason like they had a money printer in the coaches office. yet, they stick me with no deal? i'd take out that policy and play to my next contract, which would be elsewhere. preferably a division rival, so i could stick it to them a couple times a year.

Why does everyone continue to give owens any credit for anything by still calling him t-o? He does not deserve to be called t-o especially as he gave himself that moniker.....Please just call him by owens or better yet, just disregard and ignore EVERYTHING this idiot says.

T.O I see you on TV, just not playing football. If it were me I would Trade Jackson to the Rams or the Seahawks. Any team that doesn't have to play the Giants twice a year :)
