NFL allows players to wear special 9/11 apparel

There's been a lot made about some of the clothes that NFL players received from Reebok to honor the 10-year anniversary of 9/11.

That's primarily because guys like Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and Bears linebacker Lance Briggs tweeted out pictures of their gear (Briggs is seen to the right) and essentially said they didn't care if they got fined, they were wearing the gear during Sunday's games.

Very good news comes from the NFL, then, as the league informed the clubs that players could wear the gear honoring the tragic circumstances of September 2011.

"NFL confirmed to clubs this morning that players may wear special shoes/gloves from NFL licensees for Week 1 games," tweeted Michael Signora, the NFL's VP of Football Communications.

Of course, that doesn't mean that anyone can go out and buy red, white and blue shoes and throw them on for Sunday's action. Presumably Reebok will need to ship the gloves and shoves to the players (or the players can request them I would guess) and then and only then may they be worn.

And Hasselbeck's picture of the back of his shoes which are, I think the same as Briggs. But he gets the best shot of "Never Forget" on the cleats.

Per Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean, Hasselbeck will donate his shoes after the game to Team Red, White and Blue, a charity that assists wounded veterans and their families.

Hopefully, many other players will follow his lead and help to drum up charity work after showing their support for those that were senselessly taken from the world and for those that gave their lives to help others.

I think it would be a great idea for The NFL to collect this gear after the games and have each player autograph each piece of equipment.  They should then have a nationwide auction and donate the money to charities or organizations with 9-11 ties throughout the country.  Millions of dollars would be made for these charities.  I also think that Major League baseball should do the same for every game on 9-11.  I'd be honored as an ex Marine to purchase NFL or MLB equipment knowing that the money is going to the memories of what happened to our Country on 9-11.  Be Proud!  Be Proud to be an American.  And never forget those who died that  day and for those who gave thier lives for our freedoms in the wars that followed and still are being fought after 9-11.

Yeah I read that but why not make everyone do it.  Just a few players doing it wont create much revenue and this could really help a lot of people out.  I know its their stuff but people would pay high dollar to have it and if they were considering fining them for it anyway I don't see why they wouldn't want to donate it for a good cause.

I think the players should hand in the gear once they have worn it and have it auctioned off.  The proceeds could then go to the families of the fallen and all the soldiers who are disabled from fighting these wars.  Have the players sign the gloves and shoes and whatever else they have 9/11 related and I bet they easily bring in over a million dollars in charity money.

Not to make light of the events on September 11, but this apparel made by Reebok seems over-the-top and cartoonish. It makes me think of Captain America and his clothing as seen in comics. Oh and for some strange reason this Patriotic gear also makes me think of Rocky Balboa fighting against Ivan Drago. I would have liked for the football helmets to recognize the sacrifice of the Armed forces. But then again, who's going to spray paint 53 helmets for each team. The artwork is bound to be intricate and time consuming. In that case....make every football player wear a Patriots helemt on Sunday. Assuming it's the stars and stripes version.....

My favorite is the complaint for not using spell check on a year...  Of course spell check works on numbers.  Right right?

It's good the NFL made this call or else it would have made them look bad handing out fines for patriotism. I'm curious to see what tributes players do after they score a touchdown, should be an interesting sunday. God bless the people who died 9/11.
