DeSean Jackson wants $10M+ per year in new deal?

DeSean Jackson held out from Eagles training camp for a reasonably long time, wanting a new contract from Philly before beginning to play. The Eagles have said they could, technically, give Jackson the money. But why haven't they?

But perhaps it's because the Eagles simply don't value DeSean the way, well, DeSean values DeSean. According to Tim McManus of Philadelphia Sports Daily, the talks between Philly and DeSean are at a "standstill" and that there will be no "surprise" contract for Jackson before kickoff on Sunday, as some folks believe.

That's primarily because Jackson and his agent Drew Rosenhaus are apparently seeking a five-year deal that falls somewhere between the contract the Jets gave Santonio Holmes (five years, $50 million) and the deal that Larry Fitzgerald recently signed with the Cardinals (eight years, $120 million).

The provides a pretty big range, given that Holmes is making $10 million a year and Fitzgerald is making $15 million a year -- McManus says that Rosenhaus wants a deal that is "much closer to Holmes money."

Still, that's a lot of cash for a guy who has some concerns about his size and ability to withstand punishment in the NFL. Which is probably why the Eagles want to hold off a bit longer on handing him a new paycheck.

With Vick's long-term future secured, the Eagles have the franchise tag available for Jackson in 2012, so they don't necessarily even need to worry about giving Jackson a new deal for another two years at minimum if they so choose.

That probably won't sit well with the wideout, but it's hard to imagine he's real happy with Joe Banner telling everyone that the Eagles could give Jackson an extension right now as it is right now anyway.

DeSean Jackson wants $10M+ per year in new deal?

There is no room in here for this Smack talking Racist (reverse racist) talk about about how "We" don't want young Black men to get paid. That goes for the Political slams as well. This is a Sports platform and you need to be booted off CBS Sportsline if you can't separate the two . . .  When you get smart enough to understand the economics of Sports, the Fans and their support of respective Teams across the country, you'll understand it simply isn't true.
Desean simply isn't worth what Desean thinks he's worth, especially on a 5 year deal . . . You see, if he gets more, it comes from somewhere. Plus they have this thing called a "Salary Cap" that means if he gets more, others get less. They just made a huge investment into Michael Vick and others (Like McCoy), are a far better investment . . .

DeSean Jackson wants $10M+ per year in new deal?

Please everyone stop with all the racist stuff. If a guy can help your team win and draw fans, AND is a decent human being, that team will pay the player no matter his race. The real question in all of this is why players do not honor their contracts and simply play for the money they agreed to when they signed the contract. You either go for security and lower guaranteed money, or you sign one-year contracts and try for the highest possible amount each year. You can't have it both ways. If Jackson wanted more cash the third year of the deal, then he should have signed a two-year contract. Nobody forced DeSean to sign his current contract. Be a man and honor your word. No matter what jokers like Terrell Owens tell you.

DeSean Jackson wants $10M+ per year in new deal?

He could probably get $10mil/year on the open market.  But he's not on the open market, and Philly won't give him that much.  They don't need to.  Maclin can already stretch the field, and while the pair of them is amazing, they can replace him with another quality receiver next year or the year after for cheaper, and be fine.  He's not nearly as indispensible in the Eagles' team structure as some other players are.

That's not really a knock on Jackson for trying to get what he can in the negotiations.  It's just the reality of the situation.  I don't think he's going to get that much to stay... more likely he plays out the season, then ends up a franchise-and-trade possibility if he's not willing to play for less than that.

Either way, it'll work out well for Jackson.  If they do really well this year, it will raise his stock.  Then he can either make a killing when he becomes a free agent, or a one-year killing as a Franchise guy (now that contracts like Fitzgerald's have jacked up the 'average of the top few players' price).

DeSean Jackson wants $10M+ per year in new deal?

There are always going to be people, of all races, who will hate on athletes, of all races as well, because they seem greedy when they demand extra millions for playing a sport for a living.  People hate on teachers when they go on strike to try to get themselves a couple extra THOUSAND, and I'm quite sure they deserve more money.  People hate, period.

I, for one, never feel sorry for these athletes when they don't get the money they feel they deserve.  I do, however, feel sorry for the teachers, police officers, nurses, etc. who don't get paid nearly enough for what they do.

Like the Notorious BIG once said, so poignantly, "the mo' money we come across, the mo' problems we see...".

You guys wanna know why there seems to be a faction of racist tea partiers or w.e who are hating on Desean Jackson?

I don't know what your stance on tea partiers are exactly from the above statement but again...

Just because you are a tea partier does not make you a racists!  Are their racists tea partiers?  I'm sure there are but I would say they are strongly in the minority.  I'm not a tea party member but I do believe in their cause.  I'm strongly considering joining them and I would love to see Herman Cain get elected president just to shut all the people up about race!  I think Cain would make an excellent president because he seems to be the most genuine and non-politically correct candidate out there.

As it stands, I will likely have no alternative but to vote for Perry or Bachman and be unfairly labelled a be it!  If caring for my country makes me a racist then I guess the definition of racist has changed.

You guys wanna know why there seems to be a faction of racist tea partiers or w.e who are hating on Desean Jackson? Because people legitimately don't like Jackson outside of Philly, white people, black people, hispanics, it's like terrorism, everyone who's anyone hates the guy. People don't like his ridiculous touchdown dances, running to the goal line and 'tipping' in, nor do they like the way he ruins a beautiful punt return TD to beat the Giants by running down the goal line holding the ball out. I mean what a $chmuck. What an arrogant, smug, fartsmelling $chmuck. We all appreciate that kind of talent and athleticism, but when you mock defenders constantly as you dust them, big guys in the league are gonna target you. A small guy whose the target of big defenders? I wouldn't sign him to a long term deal. I would love to see Ray Lewis run into him-wipe the smirk off that punks face.

Why do all the racist haters want young black men like DeSean Jackson to fail? I'll tell you why: Most of these racist caucasian Tea Party members want him to fail because they are jealous that an African American makes more money than them.

People who make ridiculous arguments like this crack me up!  I have no problem with the guy getting whatever he asks for if the owners are willing to pay it.

Get over yourslef with the hatred already.  You sound like you completely bought into the Obama "Class Warfare" mentality.  I have no problems with blacks succeeding.  I think it's great!  Good for them!  I'd like to see Herman Cain (black conservative republican) gain more popularity and get elected over Obama to shut up all the people that keep insisting that people who don't agree with Obama are racists.  I get so sick of hearing that stupid argument.  I don't agree with Obama's policies because they are crippling our economy.  Taxing corporations always results (ultimately) in taxing the lower and middle class because all the corporations do is simply raise the prices of their products and services to cover the tax increase.  The taxes always get passed onto the consumer.  The sooner our government (liberal, conservative or otherwise) figures this out and stops raising taxes progressively, the better off all of us will be.

Our country used to be the land of "opportunity" and has sadly become the land of "handouts".  We used to be the home of the "brave" and are quickly becoming the home of the "lazy".

When are americans (blacks, whites, hispanics...whatever your race) going to learn to stand on their own and stop relying on the power hungry government to solve all their problems?  Socialism doesn't work people.  It's been tried for centuries and it has never worked.  Why?  Because it is a flawed ideology.  Our country was founded by fleeing from the effects of stifling socialism and for a time became a beacon of hope from people all over the world to come to and get a fresh new start.  People didn't come from other countries and get handed social security checks to live off of.  They came here with hopes and dreams (and little else).  There have been more stories off rags to riches in America than any other country...and it wasn't thanks to socialists programs like Social Security and Medicare.

People had the freedom to start and grow business with little or no government intervention.  Now I'm not suggesting we simply stop social security and medicare but I (and several level headed conservatives) am suggesting that both are in need of serious reform.  We can't sustain either (let alone both) at the pace we are going.  We need to reform it while we still have some control and before we completely lose all control allowing for reality to take all of it away.  The personal 401k and IRA plans was a great idea and should be encouraged.  Sure it is too late for people already retired but those who are still working and will be soon entering the working world...these people need to be strongly encouraged to start investing in their own retirement.  The only reason people who are currently drawing social security and medicare are getting their checks are because of people who are currently working and are paying into it.  Without current workers...there is no money to pay out social security or medicare.

And you wander why we have tea partiers?  Wake up!  Everything I have outlined is precisely why the tea party came into existence.  It isn't a hate group.  It's a group of concerned Americans who are tired of our spend crazy government getting bigger and bigger with no regard of how to pay for any of it.  Their answer is always...raise taxes and print more money.  Something has got to give sooner or later people.  This is real life...not Monopoly!

While I agree and admire your enthusiasm about the redskins for the upcoming season...I do have to say that the moves philly made seem to be far wiser than what the redskins did in their attempts to "buy a title"..While I agree that Philly may not win the super bowl, they sure will be in the race, and should very easily win the division, they are better coached then Washington ever was, and Vick is much, much better than any QB that lead washington during that time...I do agree that the Redskins will be better than people expect and may even split w/philly...But 8-8 is as good as it gets!

I'd hate to be the Eagles GM...  So much talent, so little to show for it..  All of the world laughed while my Redskins tried to buy a Championship for the last 10 years... We didn't have much success with our high priced talent..  Now it's the Eagles turn.. Even the young like DJackson want want want..  Not much of a team spirit... INDIVIDUALS GETTING THEIR OWN - forget about the team.....    Hope you have better luck than my skins did..  PS: My skins don't have the big names anymore and I'm looking more forward to this year than any in the last decade..
