DeSean Jackson wants $10M+ per year in new deal?

DeSean Jackson held out from Eagles training camp for a reasonably long time, wanting a new contract from Philly before beginning to play. The Eagles have said they could, technically, give Jackson the money. But why haven't they?

But perhaps it's because the Eagles simply don't value DeSean the way, well, DeSean values DeSean. According to Tim McManus of Philadelphia Sports Daily, the talks between Philly and DeSean are at a "standstill" and that there will be no "surprise" contract for Jackson before kickoff on Sunday, as some folks believe.

That's primarily because Jackson and his agent Drew Rosenhaus are apparently seeking a five-year deal that falls somewhere between the contract the Jets gave Santonio Holmes (five years, $50 million) and the deal that Larry Fitzgerald recently signed with the Cardinals (eight years, $120 million).

The provides a pretty big range, given that Holmes is making $10 million a year and Fitzgerald is making $15 million a year -- McManus says that Rosenhaus wants a deal that is "much closer to Holmes money."

Still, that's a lot of cash for a guy who has some concerns about his size and ability to withstand punishment in the NFL. Which is probably why the Eagles want to hold off a bit longer on handing him a new paycheck.

With Vick's long-term future secured, the Eagles have the franchise tag available for Jackson in 2012, so they don't necessarily even need to worry about giving Jackson a new deal for another two years at minimum if they so choose.

That probably won't sit well with the wideout, but it's hard to imagine he's real happy with Joe Banner telling everyone that the Eagles could give Jackson an extension right now as it is right now anyway.

DeSean Jackson wants $10M+ per year in new deal?

Are you kidding me? To compare Amendola to DeSean. Jackson can score anytime he touches the ball. Amendola picks up about 6 or 7 yards. Jackson leads all players in 40+ yard playes year after year. He is clearly one of the top playmakers in football.

I just want to say, and this is coming from a White guy!  You are one hundred percent correct.. I am an Eagles fan/ season ticket holder, and I agree their are injury concerns with Jackson, but still, this needs to get done.  Plese realize All White people do not feel this way,. these tea party idiots are ruining are country, and many Caucasions realize this, Jackson deserves to get paid, simply because his profession dictates this is fair market value...

This guy deserves some kind of increase right now, let's not let the media start to get people worked up to the point that the fans turn against him. You can't tell me that Philly fans don't get pretty damn excited we he touches the ball. In football terms this guy is way under paid - my feelings is he has not earned the right for 15 million so Drew is crazy about asking that kind of cash. And the Eagles need to cough up some additional cash to keep the guy focused on the game - let's take the race talk out of it

47 catches last year, 6 TD's. The man had 47 catches? Don't elite receivers put up 100+, so he is playing at 1/2 the level of an elite receiver. Hell, I'm a Rams fan, and Danny Amendola had 85 cacthes last year. He was tied for 71st in receptions. Sure he was hurt, but playing a full season, and performing at that high level year in, and year out is what gets you paid. He's an undersized, speedy WR/Punt Returner.

I cannot beleive that you say pay him and then say if not he will not give 100% effort. If that was true I would not want him on my team at any price.

The product...what the hell are you talking about? Nothing about David Garrard was anything more than average. He could not read a defense, could not progress past his second read, tuck and ran far too often, and he wasn't particularly accurate. The players have gotten greedy. No two ways about it. The league cannot support paying average players each 10 million a year and DeSean Jackson has not earned that kind of money. He is a good player, speedy and decent to good hands, but that is cream of the crop money. He is not at that level. Between Vick and Nnamdi we are already looking at cap figures approaching 1/4 of the cap. So three players at 1/3? That doesn't leave much wiggle for the remaining 50 players. A team won't win many games that way. Simple math says they shouldn't pay him, and his talent level compared to those in that range says they shouldn't pay him. But what would you know of talent? You claim to believe Garrard was above average and that's just stupid talk.

Bulldog, what the hell are you talking about. Business ethics? Really? The owners are every bit as "greedy" and selfish as you claim the players are, it works both ways -- some players don't live up to their contracts and some owners don't live up to theirs either. Look at David Garrard, he's been a well above average QB for years but as soon as the Jaguars owe him some money, he gets his walking papers. It's a business on both ends.

DeSean Jackson wants $10M+ per year in new deal?

Let’s see, Jackson has played in the NFL for 3 years and makes over $600k a years. Gee I wish I could make that kind of money especially in this economy. Therefore, we ask, what the true value is for a player who has only played 3 years. Yes he is a game changer, but yet he still under contract. How are we supposed to teach Business Ethics to the younger generation when athletes do not fulfill there contract obligations as required, when they begin using the media and holdouts to up their ante? Gee I wish I could go to my boss after having a great year asking for more money, I do not think that would go over too well. Now mind you, I am not against paying what they deserve but if you sign a contract fulfill the terms of what you signed and then when the time is up, then negotiate. The problem we have with athletes is that a player has 2 or 3 good years and then goes public and wants more money. Well if you had a taken and attended classes while in college you might have truly understood the proper meaning of Business Ethics. Instead they skated thru college, mind you UC Berkeley is not some run of the mill school but a top academic institution, instead took some remedial courses for some athlete’s so they can play football. I see DeSean falls in that category for he hired some agent like Drew who has a knack for tearing up old contracts and asking for new ones before old ones are fulfilled. As much as I enjoy watching the NFL, I cannot see myself forking out $100+ a tickets and supporting these spoiled brats. When I see a 12-14 percent of the population unemployed and others struggling with a far less amount of disposable income, I say to these greedy, spoiled brats go to hell and hope that you do not fall in the category of athletes that file for bankruptcy or wind up supporting multiple kids brought into the world without a farther figure in there lives, because they were too dumb. Because when that times comes, no sympathy here for them. Let these foolish owners be screwed.

$10 million a year? I'm not worried about his size or injury history. I just have not seen him produce numbers that warrant $10 mill a year. If he was only 5 foot 5 inches and caught 40 touchdowns and returned 20 punts for touchdowns I would have no problem giving him $25 million a year.

Trade him to the 49ers or *gulp* the Seahawks. Pete Carroll is acquiring every PAC player he coached against.
