Jones on Romo: One of best games he's played

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has his critics, and he did nothing to dissuade them from pointing out his shortcomings after his fourth-quarter performance against the Jets on Sunday night.

(A quick recap in case you're just back from Mars: with 12 minutes to go in the game and the Cowboys leading 24-17, Romo fumbled a yard short of the end zone. Then, with less than a minute to go and the score tied, 24-24, Romo threw an interception. Thirty-seven seconds later, the Jets kicked the game-winning field goal and that was that.)

We gave Romo a name-check in this week's Coach Killers, although former Cowboys great Drew Pearson thinks Romo's intended receiver on that last fateful pick, Dez Bryant, needs to play more consistently.

And while this might buck conventional wisdom, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has only laudatory things to say about Romo. Not just in general, but specifically coming out of the Jets game. Appearing on 105.3 the Fan in Dallas, Jones was asked his thoughts on Romo's Week 1 showing (via

“I thought this may draw a little criticism," Jones began. "I thought Tony played one of the best games I have ever seen him play. You can make a big case that the way he played for three quarters was how we got there at the end and looked like we were for sure going to get the win. He played outstanding, the game has really slowed down for him which is a very good thing, he’s seeing where the ball out to go, all those things bode well for us. He really is a quarterback that has averaged 10 wins for every 16 he has started in the NFL. He’s a winner and we are going to rise and fall based on what Tony Romo is about the next several years and I’m excited about that. We’ve got somebody here where if we can get some other things together we can have a team that gets us in a position to take a shot.”

You know, it's hard to disagree with Jones here (well, except the part about Romo playing one of his best games ever). We mentioned on Monday's Pick-6 Podcast that Romo outplayed the Jets' Mark Sanchez but Sanchez appears to have a knack for avoiding mistakes at critical junctures while Romo is drawn to them. And it's not solely a function of his style of play or decision-making process. It genuinely seems like the gods of chance hate Romo.

Jones isn't buying it. In fact, he thinks Romo "loves pressure" although he concedes that the quarterback has a knack for "trying to make the best play he can instead of doing the kinds of things that don't lose football games. … There's a lot going on at that position," Jones said. "When you get somebody who can really master it, it's something special. He's close."

He better be. We picked the Cowboys to win the NFC East.

Jones on Romo: One of best games he's played

I thought aside from a couple bad descisons Tony Romo played an amazing game.  A 17 point lead going into the 4th and lost.  I think you blame your defense before your quarter back on that loss.

McGee is trash. All of you idiots hating on Tony are only jealous because he's better than every single one of you in every way. Better athlete, better off financially, better head on his shoulders, better soul. You almost all hate Romo #1 because he starts for the Dallas Cowboys and #2 because he's white. If he were black, everyone would be up in arms if someone criticized him, and Freeman would be up his ass constantly.

Tony Romo for Chris Johnson straight up. Do it now. Stephen McGee is the future in Dallas. Inconsistency at QB in the NFL = average team, prob not making the playoffs, and certainly not going anywhere.

Jones on Romo: One of best games he's played

I feel Bad for Romo because he can play like Hell the 1st 3Quarters but in Crunch-Time he is one of the Worse QBs in NFL History. Most if not All Players are judge by their performance during the 4Quarter by ComeBacks to Win a Game or Destroying a Team in the 4th or Overtime to Win a Game. For Romo, he's only as good as the first 3Quarters played which means he still has not matured enough to know how to manage the Game in Crunch-Time. I hope that he will shake his immature play and grow up to be 1 of the Best QBs in NFL History. Jones should apply a lil pressure on Romo instead of Throwing a Party for him after Losing a Game. Jones is a Nut!

Romo is a great & I mean GREAT QB when he has the protection -HometownFollies

That might be the most obvious and yet confused statement I've read on Sportsline in the past...oh, I don't know...EVER?

Dude, EVERY QB in the history of the NFL has been great WHEN THEY HAVE PROTECTION.  For crying out loud; I could be great with all the time I needed in the pocket to find an open man and throw a football.

Unfortunately, Tony Romo is average, and I mean AVERAGE in almost every aspect of the game.

He can throw a nice spiral.  So did my high school QB.  He knows the playbook.  So did my college QB.  He CAN NOT play in the clutch and yet the 'boys still saw fit to signing him to an obscene contract.  That's the only difference between those three guys.  That and, maybe Jessica Simpson, but that just comes with the jersey...

Sorry man.  You're delusional.

Jones on Romo: One of best games he's played

Well thats the kind of comments you get from a GM that doesn't know the game. What is hilarious is Jones will continue to make changes around Romo without it ever dawning on him that Romo is the problem. The guy still makes rookie mistakes when the game is on the line. You really have to wonder what must happen for Jerry to realize what his biggest problem is, that being his QB. Anyway, keep up the good work JJ, for it makes for compelling TV everytime the Cowboys snatch defeat from the jaws of victory......

Jones on Romo: One of best games he's played

As a lifelong Cowboys fan since day one, I'm totally appalled by Jerry Jones comments complimenting Tony Romo's game as one of the best games that Romo's ever played. Are you kidding me or was his visiting "skybox" suite, just a little bit too high for him. There are good regular season QB's and great post season QB's. Romo's has never been a big time winner, not even when they had home field advantage
throughout the playoffs several years ago. He has absolutely no leadership qualities, but he sure in the hell has that "it was my mistakes that cost us the game" song down pretty good now. First, it was the "choke" job he pulled when fumbled the snap years ago on a sure win and moving on in the playoffs. I kept telling my friends, package Romo and a few draft picks to Carolina and get Cam Newton with the first pick of this year's draft. Sure, Newton lost his first game, but what a performance for his first NFL first game. The kid is a winner and in time
he will prove it. I never thought Eli Manning would get win a Super Bowl before Romo. I'll always live and die with the Cowboys, but until Jerry Jones wakes up and realizes Romo will never take him or the Dallas Cowboys and their fans to the 'promised land', it will be the same story every year.

Jones on Romo: One of best games he's played

Romo is a great & I mean GREAT QB when he has the protection, even in the close games in the 4th quarter BUT if he gets hit, rattled, pressured, breathed on, etc. he turns into Tim Couch, untill he can handle the pressure, which he has shown he can't, we are never gonna go furthur than a one and done in the playoffs, and Jerry- you are living in a fantasy land and you are trying to convince not only us (Die-hard Cowboy Fans) but yourself that Romo is the answer but you aren't fooling us anymore.  Sick and tired of everyone else signing key free agents and getting closer to their goal, while we spend money in the wrong places and on the wrong players and get further away!!!!
