Charles Woodson fined $10K for punch in Week 1

In Thursday night's NFL season opener, the Packers and Saints threw down. Some more than others -- Charles Woodson threw a punch towards New Orleans David Thomas but wasn't ejected for the flagrant action.

It was expected that Woodson would get one of the fine-filled envelopes from the league office and, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, such a notice came in the mail on Wednesday and will cost Woodson $10,000.

We noted at the time that Woodson should have been ejected -- and noted afterwards that the refs' lack of awareness probably hurt the Saints chances of winning.

Now we'll note that $10,000 is a pretty cheap cost for intentionally striking an opponent on the field of play. Cortland Finnegan and Andre Johnson went to blows last season and each ended up being nailed with a $25,000 fine. The same goes, as we noted when Johnson/Finnegan were fined, for Oakland's Richard Seymour, who received a $25,000 fine for punching Ben Roethlisberger.

Given the emphasis on not, you know, punching other players as well as historical precedent, it's pretty safe to say that Woodson got off light for his actions against New Orleans.

Pack87 you are either blind, didn't really watch the game or clips of the event, or are a blind homer. Woodson threw two separate punches to the midsection. It was cheap and dirty, but at the same time 100% sissy on his part. Sort of like your pretending that it didn't happen.

Charles Woodson fined $10K for punch...

Packer fan here.  Woodson should have been suspended one game, plus the 10k...  Cheap shots should not be tolerated.   I don't care what the Saint's lineman said/did, this was a cheapshot.  You know better 21...

Go Pack!

He should have been ejected from the game, are we playing football or boxing here. It is just what it was called in every aspect "unsportsman like conduct".

NFL Refs belong in Pee Wee Football

Yet another example of the NFL's grade Z officiating. The punch occured directly in front of an official who was too scared to call it. Have that offical's game pay rescinded and suspend him for 4 games with the treat of being fired if he ever misses such an obvious call again.  The NFL is the world's most prosporous sport but has part time, friends of the family types allowed to "call" a game.
