Peyton Manning will miss 2011 season ... maybe

Peyton Manning will miss all of 2011 following the neck surgery that knocked him out thus far, Jim Irsay told Colts supporters at a Super Bowl breakfast on Monday morning.

We think -- Irsay hopped on Twitter shortly after the news surrounding his announcement and attempted to clarify the situation.

"I didn't say Peyton out 4season FOR SURE,keeping him on ActiveRoster n taking it month by month/Outside chance of return n December possible," Irsay tweeted Monday after the breakfast.

The news comes just a few hours after Pittsburgh put a painful dagger into Indianapolis' early season with a 23-20 win at the Colts Lucas Oil Field.

According to, Manning will not practice again until December of this season and "may not play again until 2012."

Heretofore, the Colts have declined to put Manning on Injured Reserve; they've said that they had no plans to do so until his full 2011 season was in jeopardy. And Irsay's tweet could be an indication that Indy will keep him off of IR for even longer, although it makes little-to-no sense to try and bring him back for what already appears to be a lost season.

This news is bad, of course, but it's also not that surprising -- the idea that Manning could come back and actually play again this season seemed far-fetched ever since the Colts confirmed his September surgery.

Recent reports that Manning traveled to Europe for stem-cell therapy before undergoing his September 8 neck procedure didn't help things and now we're right where we thought we'd be sans Manning: the Colts are struggling on a week-by-week basis to be competitive.

The good news, at least, is that they've admitted the need to monitor his health long term.

Peyton Manning will miss 2011 season.. Hopefully!

Yeah... it's even worst listening to Peyton fans cry about him not playing than when he gets sacked on the field. I rather see him flatned than see all this that's going on right now. It's really lame. Collins... you messed out Titans up... thanks for passing on the tradition.

Peyton Manning will miss 2011 season ... maybe

peyton's career is finished. sure he'll come back next season, but he'll be an old 36 yrs.. 3 neck surgeries in barely 18 months?! he never had quick feet, but was always quick to throw the ball away or take a phantom sack rather than take a big hit. now, he'll be really scared knowing the next hit could put him in a wheel chair. i bet when/if he comes back he looks no better than jim everett did at 36. flinching in the pocket, chucking & ducking like he did in college and the first 7 yrs. of his NFL career. he's lucky he played rex grossman in the super bowl or he'd still be known as a chicken choker.

I disagree.  If the Colts get the #1 pick, a smarter move would be to trade back.  They could get a 10-15 pick team that will overpay dearly for Luck.  I bet the Colts could get that 10-15 pick this year, a #1 the next year, plus a couple more mid-rounders.  Look into someone like a Kellen Moore (Cerebral, accurate QB with great leadership skills and experience) and you have not only a QB of the future, but also the picks to build the team around him.  Instantly you have the youth and versatility to transform your team ala the Broncos of 1997-98.

Of course, I would be very, very surprised if the Colts don't win 4-5 games and get out of the running.  This is a team with a proud tradition that is NOT going to roll over.  I think we saw last night that they are not going to just lay down and "Suck for Luck".

Peyton Manning will miss 2011 season ... maybe

watching the game last night, i was struck by a strong sense of irony- the Colts run defense kicked butt and except for a few dazzling plays you'd expect from a guy like Big Ben, played well, limiting  the Steelers to 16 points.  The defense was always considered the weak point, especially run defense.  Now, the offense can't get out of its own way.  A few bright spots, Addai, an evolving offensive run-blocking line, but dropped passes and missed TD throws, Peyton must be in agony watching the ineptitude.  You just get healthy, big fella.  Other guys will continue to rise and I still think the Colts will evolve into a better-than-average team.  And after they are tempered by the fires of the forge, look out next year when Mr. Quarterback returns.

@MWRedskins4 Luck should not be grabbed? Just imagine if the Packers went with the same philosphy with Favre and did not pick Rodgers. Manning had 2 neck surgeries.  There is a very good chance that he won't be healthy for the next 5 years. If the Colts want to continue not thinking about their future and thinking Manning will play forever they better get use to drafting in the top 5 for a long time.

I'm not a Colts fan, but watching what is happening to them without Manning really makes you appreciate what a great player he is and how important heis to that team. They went from superbowl contender to top draft contender with the injury of one player. No doubt he is one of the greatest of all time. Hope he gets healthy and we see him in 2012.

The NFL just isnt the same without Manning calling audibles. Watching a Colts game is so painful now. I mean, even if you dont pull for Indy, the games they play against Pitt and NE  and other contenders are meaningless now. One player should not make a team anyway but Manning is the Colts. As for Luck being a replacement, that awfully bold. College and the NfL are like night and day. On the flip side, could this be the next Aaron Rodgers storyline????? Good luck Peyton!!

Uh huh, I bet they're going to let Peyton play and blow their shot at the top pick.

As if the Colts had that much integrity.

Peyton Manning won't and shouldn't play in meaningless games this year. His comeback for 2011 depends on the Colts being in position to make the playoffs, as long as they're in the hunt he'll keep preparing to play but if they fall out of contention expect a definitive shutdown until 2012.  Manning is a smart guy and still has years ahead of him in the NFL and won't risk his health for a sub playoff team.

Peyton Manning unable to play = Jim Irsay uncovered as a clown.

Watch out Indianapolis ... a losing season might mean the Colts pack up in the middle of the night and head off to LA.

It's in Irsay's blood.
