Peyton Manning will miss all of 2011 following the neck surgery that knocked him out thus far, Jim Irsay told Colts supporters at a Super Bowl breakfast on Monday morning.

We think -- Irsay hopped on Twitter shortly after the news surrounding his announcement and attempted to clarify the situation.

"I didn't say Peyton out 4season FOR SURE,keeping him on ActiveRoster n taking it month by month/Outside chance of return n December possible," Irsay tweeted Monday after the breakfast.

The news comes just a few hours after Pittsburgh put a painful dagger into Indianapolis' early season with a 23-20 win at the Colts Lucas Oil Field.

According to WISH-TV.com, Manning will not practice again until December of this season and "may not play again until 2012."

Heretofore, the Colts have declined to put Manning on Injured Reserve; they've said that they had no plans to do so until his full 2011 season was in jeopardy. And Irsay's tweet could be an indication that Indy will keep him off of IR for even longer, although it makes little-to-no sense to try and bring him back for what already appears to be a lost season.

This news is bad, of course, but it's also not that surprising -- the idea that Manning could come back and actually play again this season seemed far-fetched ever since the Colts confirmed his September surgery.

Recent reports that Manning traveled to Europe for stem-cell therapy before undergoing his September 8 neck procedure didn't help things and now we're right where we thought we'd be sans Manning: the Colts are struggling on a week-by-week basis to be competitive.

The good news, at least, is that they've admitted the need to monitor his health long term.

Peyton Manning will miss 2011 season ... maybe

Collins just looked bad last night. Painter looked somewhat awful, but remember, he got very little reps with the first team offense in the past, and I doubt he has had much this year also. Give him a week or two to gel with the starters and see what you have then. It's just too early to call him a failure givin the circumstances. Actually kind of excited to see what some of the backups have to offer on both sides of the ball.

Guys please stop posting as if they were coached to win that game. The 2nd half substitutions and the blocking schemes kind of give it away.

As a long time Colt fan, this is embarrassing this team can not win any games without their starting quarterback. I never thought they would
be able to make the playoffs without him, but really thought they could pull off 7 or 8 wins this year without Manning. I just hope the organization
has learned how vulnerable they are now to this 1 great player in his mid 30's.Hopefully Peyton comes back next year and the Colts develop a plan B

ACT test

Brett Favre was to Aaron Rodgers as
Peyton Manning could be to _________

Andrew Luck?  Why not?  They have as good a chance of getting him as Seattle.

Write this year off, make sure Peyton is healthy and start fresh next year.
(Oh, and sorry Peyton for the Favre comparison- you have proven who is better.- both on and off the field)

Honsetly, there would be little to no point in risking Manning's long-term health by bringing him back in December.  We clearly won't be in the playoff hunt at that point.

Painter was predictably awful when Collins (who was almost as awful) got his concussion.  Still, our defense showed massive improvement.  And it's worth noting that for all of his glorious suckage, Painter did lead our only offensive TD drive of the game.

I don't see us lucking into Luck though.  There are some other teams on our schedule also struggling mightily (Jacksonville, Kansas City, Cincinnati) that could result in a win or two.  And a they, plus Miami, Seattle, and Minnesota (some of whom have tougher schedules than the Colts) are all having their own struggles.  There's a lot of variables in there.  I guess we'll know more in a few months, but my money is on the Dolphins, just because their slide has continued all the way back from the middle of last season, and they can't seem to snap out of it.

Chances of him being back in December seems rather dubious, besides by then the Indianapolis Geldings will certainly have been eliminated from the playoffs.  Give him the year off.

I agree that this season looks lost for the Colts but if they do get the #1 pick I would suggest trading down for multiple picks and go after a playmaker like Justin Blackmon-

Peyton Manning will miss the 2011 season

Looks Like the Colts will be taking Andrew Luck next year with the first overall pick in the Draft.  Two years behind Manning will be good for him.
