GleasonPosted by Josh Katzowitz

The other day we told you about the story, written by the New Orleans Times Picayune that revealed that former Saints standout special teams player Steve Gleason had been diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, at the age of 34.

While the nasty disease has no known cure and Gleason eventually will lose all control of his body movement, he’s remained optimistic while raising funds and awareness for the malady. The TP story -- and Gleason’s admission -- was cited by the Saints in their comeback victory against the Texans, and evidently, the story touched the city of New Orleans.

That was evident Monday night when the Saints presented Gleason with a Super Bowl XLIV ring and city mayor Mitch Landrieu also gave Gleason a key to the city during a private party, according to the Times Picayune.

"At the beginning of the game, I never knew if we were going to win or lose, but I was always for certain that I was going to walk out of there with my head held high because I got ready, I had the right people around me, and I was going to give it everything I had," Gleason said during a six-minute speech. "It's the same now. We're going to give it everything we've got. I have a calming sense of certainty that we're going to win this thing."

Said Scott Fujita, who attended the event: “This isn't about Steve having ALS. This is about Steve and his contribution to the 2009 team and the championship. He deserved it."

Gleason given Super bowl ring, key to city

Cool move by the Saints. I can't imagine how this Gleason dude must feel right now and I've had trouble getting this story out of my head since I've heard it. God bless the guy for being strong and optimistic but more than anything, this is a horrifying reminder that anything can happen to anyone at any time.

Also, as previously pointed out, it helps to check your grammar and spelling when you tell other people to go back to school, commonsense.

What a class act by the Saints

I don't when Steve Gleason last played for The Saints but it was simply a class act by The Saints and their organization to recognize their former player and the hideous illness of ALS.  It gives the disease more light in the public forum for most us of only know about this because of Lou Gehrig but may not know any one who has it. Curt Schilling has spoken about this often and named a child after this disease.  Maybe The Saints and Gleason can form an organization that accepts donations that will lead to a cure for this horrible disease.

The author of this article, Josh Katzowitz make a lot of assumptions that everybody knows this story already.  What year was Gleason last with the Saints? Tragic that anyone get delt a blow like Gleason. but of you want to raise awareness, people need to have informative journalizm. Go back to school and learn that Josh!

Classy Act

He may not have been a part of the Super Bowl team but a man of true character for the charity work he has done while fighting the disease. It is so hard for a professional athlete to have his game taken away and kudos to the Saints for his special moment when battling such a horrible disease.

I'm a bit confused, why had he not received it yet anyway?
