PainterPosted by Josh Katzowitz

Earlier this week, we wondered that, even if Kerry Collins had overcome his post-concussion symptoms, if it made more sense to start Curtis Painter at quarterback for the Colts.

Especially since Painter kept Indianapolis in the contest vs. the Buccaneers and surprised many of us by not playing terribly in his first NFL start before his team lost the game and ultimately fell to 0-4 on the season.

I didn’t see the point of running Collins back out on the field, and apparently, neither does Colts coach Jim Caldwell.

As reported by owner Jim Irsay on his Twitter account, Painter will start this Sunday vs. the Chiefs. Said Caldwell, via the Indianapolis Star: “There’s no question; he’s our starter.”

Indy's Pain in the Neck
Collins has practiced this week on a limited basis, but it makes little sense to rush him back. It might not make sense, in fact, to remove Painter from the starting spot at all. He wasn’t great last Monday against Tampa Bay, but he was competent enough. He was 13 of 30 for 281 yards and two touchdowns* while losing a fumble.

*Pierre Garcon might have provided a tiny helping hand here.

But with the season already a lost cause anyway, the Colts should stick with Painter and see what he can accomplish over a 13-game stretch. Maybe, he’ll continue to surprise.

Why not start Painter over Collins?  I think the Colts should regret ever signing Collins.

I don't see how the Colts didn't know Peyton would be out.  They tipped off during negotiations that they knew he might be out for the start of the season.

If they actually wanted to win they could have gotten Hasselbeck instead, who is a thousand times better than Collins.

Do you follow football? Hasselbeck was signed the first or second day players were able to sign. And, Peyton wasn't ruled out until close to the regular season, like 2 weeks before. Collins was a mistake. They saw Painter in his preseason games and panicked. He should be the starter until he either throws 4 picks/commits 4 turnovers in a half or gets hurt. Both very possible against any team. Collins looks like he's in slow motion out there. I bet Collins is regretting this move as much as the Colts management is. The team he retired from is 3-1 with a veteran on his last legs leading the charge. The team he plays for now is 0-4 and it the bottom is no where in sight.

At least now the Colts stand a chance to win this game. With Collins at the helm, it's goner. Finally Caldwell is doing something right now lets hope the defense will start playing more consistent instead of going up and down on a weekly basis.

Go Colts.

The kid didn't look too bad next week considering his first start was a Monday Night Game against a far better defense than the Chiefs, Im expecting the Colts to get there first win. Horse Baby!!!

They should have went after Favre for one season.
He would have been very expensive to pull out of retirement again, and it would not have ultimately made a difference.  Favre looked beyond done last year.  Don't get me wrong, he's a shoe-in Hall of Famer.  But it was easy to see last year that his skills had eroded to the point where he just can't do it anymore.  At this point in his long career, he wouldn't have had any more in the tank than Collins does.

Frankly, there were no potentially-playoff-producing options left available when the need arose.  The closest thing available was Garrard, and he didn't become an option until it was too late (the team had committed to Collins, and there was no time to teach Garrard the offense).

The bottom line is we all knew that if Manning couldn't come back soon, the season was a wash no matter who else we tossed out there.  I do agree with the author though:  we may as well see whether Painter has enough in him to be Manning's backup for another year or two, while we locate and develop a future starter (it's been evident for a couple years that Painter is NOT future starter material).

Hasselback was already signed. They should have went after Favre for one season. Actually Painter won't be bad for a year. Manning looks like a proud Papa when painter does well as opposed to Collins doing anything.

I seriously thought they were trying to tank the season and that's why they started Collins in the first place.  If they actually wanted to win they could have gotten Hasselbeck instead, who is a thousand times better than Collins.
