Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata has been fined $15,000 by the NFL for his hit Sunday night on Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, several outlets are reporting.

The play in question happened with 8:22 remaining in the second quarter and Baltimore leading New York, 20-7. Sanchez dropped back to pass and as he was about to throw the ball, Ngata blasted him from his blind side, causing a fumble that was scooped up by Ravens linebacker Jarret Johnson and returned for a touchdown.

Referee Mike Carey didn't throw a flag on the play but the NFL, after reviewing the tape, clearly feels differently. The league fined Ngata for roughing the passer. "Specifically, on a pass play, he lowered his head and struck the opposing quarterback,” AFC information manager Corry Rush told PFT.

"I thought Haloti actually hit him in the back with his helmet first, but that being said, he made a great play," Jets head coach Rex Ryan said.

You can judge for yourself below:

Earlier this week Ngata told Dan Patrick that "I love hitting Tom Brady because he always complains. He thinks he should never be touched," When asked if the officials listen to Brady and throw the flag, Ngata said, "No. My hits are usually clean."

Except this time, at least in the eyes of the league.

Ngata paid the fine with the loose change he routinely carries in his pockets.

He put his head down before impact and hit with the crown of his helmet.  It is taught all the way back to the JV level and before.  If the ref sees the top of your helmet you will draw a flag.  The ref did not see it but the NFL is losing QB's so fast they are cracking down even if the teams do not complain.  It was not the worst hit but it will get flagged and fined in the current NFL.

What bullshit.

I picture says a 1000 words, and apparently the NFL is seeing some words here that I don't.  Looks completely clean to me.  Led with his shoulder, wrapped up, didn't go high or low, not his fault the QB is completely defenseless due to the Jets incompetent blind side protection.

WTF is wrong with this league now?

Not that 15k will have much of an impact on his grocery list, but the NFL's principles these days are turning into such garbage.

Much love to one of my favorite former ducks Haloti friggin NGATA for laying the wood on that pansy ass Sanchez.  Even his coach thought it was clean.

This should NOT have been a fumble, it was one of the worst calls I've seen this year. That's what's really important here. Now Ngata's helmet did hit Sanchez before his arms, but there was nothing dirty about this tackle. He clearly wasn't leading with his head, he was just getting a little lateral to force such a bad throw from Sanchez it might even look like a fumble. And it worked. Was a great play. I feel like these guys are just watching all footage from the games in slow motion, and going: "Oh! Right there! Helmet hits body before hands! Clean him out!" I just hope that this wasn't the Jets complaining, this is ultimately their fault for not building a good line around Mangold and Ferguson

they should fine the jets offensive line for allowing dirty sanchez to get hit. ngata didnt go high, didnt go low (both apparently illegal) yet they STILL find a way to steal a portion of his paycheck! i agree that you need to protect the QBs, as they are vitally important to the success of the game, but this is just ridiculous. not only is it unfair to fine a player for a completely legal hit, but now your asking defensive players to make a split-second decision on "how" they tackle which ultimately gives the offensive players an advantage. youre rewarding the offense for failing to do their job! its one more manipulation of the game.
