Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata has been fined $15,000 by the NFL for his hit Sunday night on Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, several outlets are reporting.

The play in question happened with 8:22 remaining in the second quarter and Baltimore leading New York, 20-7. Sanchez dropped back to pass and as he was about to throw the ball, Ngata blasted him from his blind side, causing a fumble that was scooped up by Ravens linebacker Jarret Johnson and returned for a touchdown.

Referee Mike Carey didn't throw a flag on the play but the NFL, after reviewing the tape, clearly feels differently. The league fined Ngata for roughing the passer. "Specifically, on a pass play, he lowered his head and struck the opposing quarterback,” AFC information manager Corry Rush told PFT.

"I thought Haloti actually hit him in the back with his helmet first, but that being said, he made a great play," Jets head coach Rex Ryan said.

You can judge for yourself below:

Earlier this week Ngata told Dan Patrick that "I love hitting Tom Brady because he always complains. He thinks he should never be touched," When asked if the officials listen to Brady and throw the flag, Ngata said, "No. My hits are usually clean."

Except this time, at least in the eyes of the league.

Haloti Ngata fined $15K for hit on Mark Sanchez

Ngata is a monster up front and as a Steeler fan I would love to have him.  I thought his hit was clean and he should not have been fined.  The fines are getting ridiculous!!

Haloti Ngata fined $15K for hit on Mark Sanchez

@BurghBoy- You might think Ngata is a thug but if he were a free agent, I am sure you would be happy if the Steelers signed him.  Whether he was fined or not, it was a big play for the Ravens.<br />

seems like Ngata got the better end of that deal. 15k for a strip sack Defensive TD on national TV? bargain

I agree. What a bunch of pansies the NFL is turning out to be. Ngata is the furthest thing from a dirty player. That was sound, fundamental tackling technique taught at every level. The league should be ashamed of itself. The next time someone makes a comment about poor tackling technique in the NFL, throw this back in their face. Actually, what a Haloti Ngata should have done is brought his arm down hard on Mark Sanchez' throwing arm, which would have caused a fumble, and perhaps injured Sanchez for the remainder of the game and possibly several games. Coincidentally, that would have been perfectly legal. Idiots.

Haloti Ngata fined $15K for hit on Mark Sanchez

The ironic twist on these fines now for questionable hits is that the NFL network runs program after program of classic NFL that celebrate and glorifiy the same questionable hits and tackles from other eras.   I've seen Don Beebe landing on his head almost nightly.   So in essence the league makes money from the unfined hits and tackles from years ago, tackles and hits (through fines) today, and most likely todays fined hits and tackles in the future.
